El Greko at Sharps

Tuesday 11th November
Come and hear the man, live at Cecil Sharp House and judge for yourself the quality of song that has excited us this last year.
Graeme Knights is only a sub, the first choice will be appearing in July.
El Greko will be introducing Mike Deavin at the St Albans Club this Friday 14th

Wish I could be there. He sent me a copy of his album, "Silent Majority", which is full of wonderful songs. It's almost worth living in Britain for!

Am going to try to get to Sharp's on Tuesday to hear George, well worth the trip across London I reckon. Highly recommended & a rising star in our midst - do go along to see him if you can!

Shucks, I see the El Greko Publicity Machine has been busy...thanks Breezy! Glad to know I got you excited, but I'm married;-)
Yes, the Trojan Horse is infiltrating the bastion of English traditional music on Tuesday - and on Armistice Day too! I guess The Flowers and the Guns are a must. Me and my decidedly unpleasant-looking assistant (Graeme Knights after his head shave) will be singing a repertoire consisting 80% of English traditional songs written by a Greek during the last 3 years. How's that for sacrilege...Cecil will be spinning.
But watch out for the closing number of the first half - the Herga Ancients will be making their first public appearance...
C U there, Hil! Alan, thanks for the praise, but I could say the same about you...we must meet sometime. Let's make it Germany though, your sacrifice would be too much for my conscience otherwise!

Kalispera

timeo danaos et dona ferentes - that well-known Greek/Portuguese duo - will shortly be appearing in concert with George at the Ilium Folk Club! During the interval, Laocoon will perform his notorious snake-wrestling trick accompanied by his sons, the dyslexic Helen will launch a thousand chips and Achilles will wait millenia for a heel transplant on the NHS.

Seriously, my Hellenic friend, good luck (not that you need it) - I will only be there in spirit (or, as you might say, "in ouzo") as I will be appearing elsewhere.

See you in Storbans soon.

Alan

You are good for a bed and a beer any time you are near Cologne George. I go to the UK occasionally, but I haven't gigged there for ages. Hope your show goes well. I play your album all the time.

Opening thread a bit of self-publicity for the hairy one as well as for our George methinks! Anyway, good on you Breezy for letting them all know what a great eving it is going to be. Combination of George's brilliant songs and the Graeme's great voice = an evening not to be missed!

Good to know you will be there as well, Hil

Would please any Mudcatters who turn up at Sharp's tonight make themselves known to me, especially if they intend to buy CDs - I have special rates for Mudcatters and Herga members (£8 for 1, £15 for 2, £20 for all three).

Cut-me-own-throat-George.

Right - now to change the strings on the 12-string....

You'll be great, as ususal.

I was hoping to be there, but don't think I'll make it now, sorry.

Steve.

If you've temporarily had enough of The Flowers and the guns by close tonight, can I sing it Friday please?

Steve, you can sing the Flowers any time you like, mate. I already had the pleasure of hearing it from Leadfingers, it will be great to hear it from you.
Hil, I think I'll know you without the badge, but let's wear badges anyway, to advertise Mudcat. Be ready - no promises - for "bridge of sound" effect or for a spot of rain falling. You know what I mean. Neither are in the list right now, but I am reviewing and hope to squeeze one of them in somehow. Perhaps if I can clamp Graeme's mouth between songs...

Thanks, folks - well, I certainly enjoyed myself! Nice crowd (counted 42), nice club, the choruses got picked up around the room even without "chief Georgette" LF! Glad I included Circles in the end, it was gratifying to hold the straight note while the room was booming down the scale on "fai-ai-ai-air". The Greek flag joke went down well (Hey - I waved the Greek flag in C Sharp House!) and my Grandad's worrybeads got a nice airing too. Most grateful to the Australian/Essex/Surrey chapters of the fan club turning up. Rolled home around 00:45, slept like a baby.
Next-Banbury next week.
CU Thursday Terry - can you make Johnny Handle?

Thanks to George and Graham for an excellent evening, it was great to get a chance to hear a more concentrated performance of Georges excellently crafted songs and may I say, as an ex Merchant Navy man ( Able Seaman), I felt he perfectly captured the feelings of someone going back to sea after leave, also the very similar feelings of the man on the oil rigs. Beautifully captured, Many thanks to you both. It was nice also to meet again Vanessa (Mrs George) and MGAS also and some of the Hergaites as well.
The floor singers were excellent as always, and to hear a sprinkling of WW1 songs on Armistace day, but also I especially liked Finbar's "Angus Og's " response and the lovely rendition of "My singing bird as you" by a lady whose name I didn't catch. Lovely stuff.

It's good to be able to hear more than the one or two songs per evening that time allows at Herga,Windward etc. A first, I think, with you both singing together. Nice to have Mike up there to join in on his superb "13 Florins" too. Good floor singers & musicians all added to the enjoyment of a great evening. Look forward to more please. Next gig?

Indeed it was a first of Graeme and me singing together; and a first for "Emptyhanded" for Graeme too; and a first for Mike, Graeme and I to join voices (other than at singers' nights at Herga of course).

Next gigs till the end of 2003 are:
1) Wednesday 19 November: Ride-a-Cock-Horse club, Banbury (30 min showcase, plus 30 min showcase for Hilary - MGAS)
2) Saturday 22 November: with Breezy at "Spielplatz" Naturist Camp, Bricket Wood (it's a private event - but WE'll be fully dressed!)
3) 29/30 November: Bedworth Festival - at various singarounds and also it looks like I will have a spot at the Sunday Lunchtime Concert
4) Tuesday 16th December: with Hilary at the Ampthill Folk Club, Queen's Head pub, Ampthill, Beds
5) Sunday 28th December: Open Door Folk Club, Manchester
