It was fantastic. 1st half acoustic, doing Robert Johnson songs and stuff, second half electric... into black magic woman, man of the world, green manalishi, the stumble, etc. Outstanding blues music played straight from the heart, im gonna go buy the DVD. |

Only did an hour and a half (without interval) but as Herself said, with his history it's amazing he can do that much! Good to see the club packed for once as well. RtS |

The rest of the group were the slide guitarist Jeremy Spencer, the jazz/blues guitarist Danny Kirwan, bass player John MacVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood. Their hits (mainly written and sung by Peter Green) included, Albatross, Man of the World, Black Magic Woman (the original version), Oh Well and The Green Manalishi. A mixture of drink, drug, religious and mental health issues devastated the band in the early seventies. All three guitarists left, leaving Fleetwood and MacVie with little more than the band's name. The survivors went through several name changes and eventually metamorphised into the Californian pop group of the mid seventies, which eventually released the classic West Coast pop album Rumours. Many old blues fans, who include several Mudcatters, I believe, still prefer the original line up which played blues - effectively a different band. Jeremy Spencer, who spent some time with the Children of God sect, returned to playing his Elmore James style blues. I last read of Danny Kirwan being resident at a hostel for alcoholics. Peter Green himself freely admits to being an acid casualty. After a turbulent career of mixed fortunes in the seventies, which included a spell in a hospital for mental illness, he returned to playing blues guitar. For many of us he is one of the jewels in the crown of the British blues scene - easily up there with Clapton, Stan Webb, Kieran White, Mick Taylor etc. Hope I haven't sent you to sleep jOhn! |

20 Nov 03 - 04:26 AM (#1057608) Subject: RE: PETER GREEN at Hull City Hall From: mooman To add to alanabit's excellent resume, Peter was talked back into going on the road and recording by friend Nigel Watson and they formed the current excellent Peter Green Splinter Group who have now released about 5 albums (I have all of them) including an acoustic album of Robert Johnson songs (more about him on Mudcat's front page!) which an old musician mate of mine, Brian Bull, gets a slot on. I am one of those Mudcat fans of the original Fleetwood Mac band alanabit talked about and saw them live several times and have a couple of vinyl albums from that period. When I helped run a session in Richmond, SW London from the late 70s till the beginning of the 90s, Peter was a regular listener (he lived just a few yards away) and I remember a few interesting chats with him. This was during his non-playing reclusive phase. The Californian version of FM with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks was a very different band indeed as alanabit describes although not bad at all in their own genre. If my memory serves me right, Christine Perfect was also in the later incarnations of the original FM. You've started something here now jOhn I hope you realise! Peace moo |

20 Nov 03 - 07:51 AM (#1057692) Subject: RE: PETER GREEN at Hull City Hall From: Guessed I saw FM in 1971/2 in Small Heath Park B'ham and they did the soundcheck behind a flimsy curtain on the next stage for 1/4 hour ruining the end of the previous act (who had played through a thunder storm to the very vocal delight of the soaking crowd). Then when the curtains opened they continued for another 1/4 hour tuning-up. Then they played the odd number with a load of undecipherable banter that the body language told me was pure egotism, as if we knew every pecadillo of theirs and we should not need to hear at the back. I walked away 1/3 into their spot. Albert Ross was disgusted at their arrogance too. Nice tune shame about the demeanour. Status Quo earlier on the bill - for all their repetitiveness - entertained me more. |

(I was just a lad at the time) and John McVie spoke to me. He said 'fuck off.' Peter Green was excellent and is still unsurpassed at producing what we used to call 'woman tone.' |
