I can't help with chords, but I see we don't have lyrics yet, either. The source had some spelling mistakes I had to correct, so I wouldn't vouch for the accurary of the lyrics.
-Joe Offer-

Lullaby in Ragtime
(Sylvia Fine)

Won't you play the music so the cradle can rock
To a lullaby in ragtime
Sleepy hands are creeping to the end of the clock
Play a lullaby in ragtime
You can tell the sandman is on his way
By the way that they play
As still as the trill of a thrush
In a twilight hush
So you can hear
The rhythm of the river on the side of the boat
As you sail away to dreamland
High above the moon you hear a silvery note
As the sandman takes your hand
So rock-a-bye my baby
Don't you cry my baby
Sleepy time is nigh
So won't you rock me to a ragtime lullaby

(Danny repeats, woman sings Goodnight, Sleep Tight)

Goodnight, time to call it a day
Sleep tight, dream your troubles away
Goodnight, in spite of any sorrow
There's a brand new day on it's way tomorrow
Someday, all your dreams will come true
Someway, for me and you
So close your eyes and dream of it my darling
Till then goodnight, goodnight, sleep tight

Sylvia Fine wrote 'Lullaby in Ragtime' for the movie, The Five Pennies, starring Fine's husband, Danny Kaye

Published in 1958, recorded by Danny Kaye with Eileen Wilson

Kaye also recorded "Lullaby in Ragtime" with Louis Armstrong singing "Good Night, Sleep Tight."

GOOD NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT
recorded by Danny Kaye & Louis Armstrong

(Louis)
Goodnight, time to call it a day
Sleep tight, dream your troubles away
Goodnight, in spite of any sorrow
There's a brand new day on it's way tomorrow
Someday, all your dreams will come true
Someway, for me and you
So close your eyes and dream of it my darling
Till then goodnight, goodnight, sleep tight

( Louis repeats, Danny joins in with Lullabye in Ragtime)

Won't you play the music so the cradle can rock
To a lullbye in ragtime
Sleepy hands are creeping to the end of the clock
Play a lullabye in ragtime
You can tell the sandman is on his way
By the way that they play
As still as the trill of a thrush
In a twilight hush
So you can hear
The rythym of the river on the side of the boat
As you sail away to dreamland
High above the moon you hear a silvery note
As the sand man takes your hand
So rock-a-bye my baby
Don't you cry my baby
Sleepy time is nigh
Won't you rock me to a ragtime lullabye

Danny: Now comes the hard part, baby.
Do you suppose you can sing "Five Pennies" while
Pops and I sing something else?
Girl: Sure, I can sing as good as he can.
Louis: And who can't?

(Louis repeats Goodnight, Sleep Tight; Danny repeats Lullaby in Ragtime; Girl sings Five Pennies)

This little penny is to wish on
And make your wishes come true
This little peeny is to dream on
Dream of all you can do
Thislittle is a dancing penny
See how it glitters and it glows
Bright as a whistle
Light as a thistle
Quick, quick as a wink
Up on it's twinkling toes
This little penny is to laugh on
To see that tears never fall
This this little penny
Is the last little penny
Most important of all
For this penny is to love on
And where love is, heaven is there
So with just five pennies, if they're these five pennies
You'll be a millionaire
For this penny is to love on
And where love is, heaven is there
So with just five pennies, if they're these five pennies
You'll be a millionaire

Here are the chords. The tune starts in Eb, then modulates to the key of E. There is a Tag ending on the bridge, which is to say, a slight change in the chord progression, played in stop time(which means that each chord sounds once and stops, while the singer finishes the measure unaccompanied while keeping the tempo.

This is a standard device used by song and dance performers in vaudeville, also called the "Big Ending".

They are not, strickly speaking, easy chords for beginners, but you can make them very easy by simply playing it all in one key, and, instead of playing E6 and Emaj7, simply playing a straight E chord. Also, you can ignore the tag ending and do each verse the regular way.

If you are not familar with the way that I have notated this, there is one measure between each / / and you play two downstrokes for each chord that I have shown. Some measures have an extra chord connected with a hyphen like this / E Eb7-D7/--you play only one down stroke for each chord when the are connected this way--so the measure would be played with two downstrokes on the E, and one on the Eb7 and one on the D7--

To make it even easier, at the bottom I've transposed it into the key of D, so you can play it without using barre chords.

Eb Ebmaj7/ Eb6 Ebmaj7/ Fm7 Fm7/ Fm7 Fm7
Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Bb7/Eb Eb/
Eb7 Eb7/ Eb7 Eb7/Ab Ab/Abm Abm/
Eb Cm7/ Fm7 F7/Bb7(pause)/(pause) Bb7/

E Emaj7/ E6 Emaj7/ F#m7 F#m7/ F#m7 F#m7
F#m7 F#m7/F#m7 F#m7/F#m7 B7/E E/
E7 E7/ E7 E7/A A/Am Am/
E C#m7/ F#m7 F#7/Bb7B7/B7 Bb7/
Tag Ending(Last time, from "So Rock a bye my baby..")
|A A/Am Am/ E Eb7-D7/C# C#7/
F#7F#7/F#m7B7/E E|

A final note: I worked out these chords by ear, from a music file of the song that I transferred to my
computer and played over and over til I got them right--they are the right chords, and if you are properly in tune, you can play right along with the recording using my chords(the Eb ones, not the ones in D). If they don't quite work, it is simply because I made a typo or put a slash in the wrong place, and you should be able to work it out yourself. I don't key the chords to the words because when you use the slash notation, you can play the accompaniment properly just by counting--if you know the song, you should be able to sing along with it--

well worth buying the VHS video of the movie, even though the technicolor is all going pink, just for the music. I also have a couple of the lp soundtracks that I cherish. A sappy movie in many ways. There is Tuesday Weld as Danny's daughter as a teenager, her first movie I think, some actual 30s & 40s musicians playing cameos of themselves, but mostly GREAT music, Louis in his prime. 1958? I think? I used to dig it out and play this duet or trio on a jazz show I used to do when I was signing off and always got calls & requests about it.

As it turns out I drew a complete blank at the State Library today - unusual for a song of that vintage.

Many thanks to all who replied. It was the harry Nilsson version that started me wanting to sing and play the song.

Sorry-forgot to actually post the D chords--

D D/ D D/ Em Em/ Em Em/
Em Em/ Em Em/Em A/ D D/
D7 D7/ D7 D7/G G /Gm Gm/
D Bm/ Em Em/A7 A7/A7 A7/

Use a d chord for the last measure, the last time through, to end it.

for the B minor, simply use an Am fingering on slid up to the 3rd fret, like this:

X-O-4-4-3-0 (if you aren't familar with that way of notating chords, each character represents a string, the numbers tell you which fret, the X means don't play it, the O means open)

Gm is 3-x-0-3-3-x

Just realized that I had the Nilsson version on a CD--it's great! He is in Eb as well--the chords are just a little different in the bridge, and he does a tag ending;;here they are in Eb--just move everything up a half step for D(sorry that I have no time to transpose it for you)--

Eb Ebmaj7/ Eb6 Ebmaj7/ Fm7 Fm7/ Fm7 Fm7
Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Bb7/Eb Eb/
Eb7 Eb7/ Eb7 Eb7/Ab Ab/Abm Abm/
F7 F7/ F7 F7/Bb7(pause)/(pause) Bb7/

Eb Ebmaj7/ Eb6 Ebmaj7/ Fm7 Fm7/ Fm7 Fm7
Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Fm7/Fm7 Bb7/Eb Eb/
Eb7 Eb7/ Eb7 Eb7/Ab Ab/Abm Abm/
Eb D7-Db7/ C7 C7/Fm7 Fm7)/Bb7 Bb7/(there are a couple extra measures on the Bb7 here at the end of the sung part, and on the last time, it resolves to a Eb major chord)--

And you can just put a capo on the first fret to play the D chords in tune with the recording-as I mentioned above, it may take a bit of fiddling, but the chords should be pretty much right--

I just read John in Brisbane's post, and it occurs to me that we have spanned a remarkable distance in this search--

Change of subject. M Ted are you from Darwin or Perth? I've just booked flights to Darwin for the Top Half Festival in June. If you're from Perth I'll be in Port Hedland in the New Year to re-visit the Immigration Detention Centre.

Sorry, John, I am half a world away, in the Washington,DC area--wish I could be there, though--I am very curious about your Persian Music project, as well as the people that it will serve. Spent a number of years working with an organization that provided support for immigrants/refugees here in the US--increasing numbers of them came to us by way of refugee camps and detention centers such as the one you'll be seeing--they are strange confluences of hope and despair, and any effort that you or anyone can make to connect with folks that are there is a wonderful gift--

Nine years on from the above correspondence, and THANK YOU for this information. I had struggled to learn this tune by Nilson and without your advice, would not have managed it. Most grateful

Here's a nice video of Danny Kaye and Barbara Bel Geddes singing this.

The clarinet probably explains the key of Eb.
