A 7.5 quake, even one at sea (as this one was) is nothing to fool with! I was in Anchorage (eating dinner) when a very small tremor hit; it felt like a truch had rammed the building. And you don't take tsunami warnings lightly!

We are fine, thanks to all, slept like a baby through the earthquake. Kind of reminds me of one of my songs, hmmm.

We didn't feel it in southeast Alaska. It was hundreds of miles away as the salmon swims.

The 1964 Anchorage earthquake created tsunamis that did tremendous damage up and down the coast. Juneau, protected by numerous islands, didn't get a wave but the water level raised and fell precipitously- three fishing boats at moorage overturned, they say.

The earthquake was almost 1400 miles from Anchorage and nearly 2000 miles from Juneau--closer to the former Soviet Union than to mainland Alaska--There are a lot of earthquakes out there--there have been 7 of a magnitude of 5 or greater so far today--if you check Current Earthquakes and associated sites, you'll discover many recent, large earthquakes, most of which you never heard about on the news--

Most of them happen in remote areas of the world and have little or no direct effect on anyone--which is why you don't hear about them, and it has only been relatively recently that we've been able to even measure and keep track of them--

Thaks, M. Ted. I keep being surprised by the distances in Alaska. Here's what I found about Amchitka, close to the epicenter:

Statistics & Facts

The population of Amchitka is approximately 25 (1990).
The approximate number of families is 0.

The amount of land area in Amchitka is 299.98 sq. kilometers.
The amount of surface water is 417.405 sq kilometers.
The distance from Amchitka to Washington DC is 5231 miles. The distance to the Alaska state capital
(Juneau- Ebbie) is 1944 miles. (as the crow flies)
Amchitka is positioned 51.56 degrees north of the equator and 178.87 degrees west of the prime meridian.

Sneeze, and you blow Amchitka into tomorrow!!!

If the earthquake didn't blow it into tomorrow, I doubt a sneeze would;-)

Thanks for the details, M. Ted. My brother and his family live in Anchorage and I had no idea how far away Amchitka was. Nice to know they are safe.

Didn't the US military light off an atom bomb on Amchitka back in the 50s or 60s?

I'm checking, but I don't find that. The Bikini Islands, yes.

From Greenpeace's nuclear archive site:

" Nuclear weapons tests have been carried out all over the world. In the Pacific at: Bikini Atoll (U.S.); Christmas Island (U.S./U.K.); Eniwetok Atoll (U.S.); Fangataufa Atoll (Fr); Johnston Atoll (U.S.); Malden Island (U.K.) and; Mororua Atoll (Fr). Also, in Australia, Monte Bello Island, at Emu Fields, and Maralinga (U.K. tests).

In the U.S.: Nevada (several sites; but the Nevada Test Site is the only currently open U.S. test site); Alamogordo, New Mexico; Carlsbad, New Mexico; Hattiesberg, Mississippi; Grand Valley, Colorado; Rifle, Colorado; Farmington, New Mexico; Hot Creek Valley, Central Nevada; Fallon, Nevada and; Amchitka, Alaska."

See also here for info on the three nuke blasts set off on Amchitka. (Three!?)

Got a question- after underground nuclear testing, does no radiation escape above ground? I should think it would. If so, what about the military personnel posted to Amchitka, and other places?

Yeah, well, Ebbie, ah, yeah.... Check out the UAA site (the second one). Seems like there's been some contamination at Amchitka, maybe, perhaps.

A Google search shows that there was a nuclear test on Amchitka, and that some of the rediation has escaped to the surface.

Alaska is still the feds experimental laboratory. Now they're building the "Missile Defense Shield" here. Billions of dollars for a system that has failed every single time. No wonder we have such a lousy healthcare system in this country.
