WORLD TOILET DAY

LOVE the logo at the World Toilet Organization. You can even get a sample constitution for establishing a local outlet. Hey! Maybe we could use their constition as a model here at MUDCAT!

Toilet as a Social Space

By Lim Tai Wei, World Toilet Organization Volunteer

The toilet, though a humble instrument, is a microcosm of society at large. Though a functional instrument, social expressions, economic development, cultural character, hygiene standards and environmental factors are expressed through the humble but necessary instrument called the toilet.

Social Expression

Public toilets often contain graffiti that espouses social issues, social frustrations and social trends in the society at large. It is a vent for such expressions to come forth. A private space that creates awareness of issues, not necessary for oneself but for others as well. However, this is an anti-social form of behaviour at the same time, as vandalism, the damage of public property is illegal in most countries.

Thus, the social expressions comes with a sense of rebelliousness that compels one to be a rebel with a cause, no doubt behind the security of a private toilet. Penal enforcement to stop such anti-social is difficult as toilet is a secure space with very little leeway for monitoring and catching the culprits. A more useful avenue of rectification would be through social mass education in which people are directed to healthier forms of social expressions - through arts, public debates, participation in public organizations or legal interest groups.

Damn! I bet that gold toilet's cold to sit on. But I guess that if you can afford a gold toilet you can afford to pay some lackey to go warm it up for you.

but someone put that damned lid down! I was informed the other day that flushing a toilet with the lid up, spays microbes up to, something like a 20 foot radius. Just think of that next time you hang your old toothbrush within shooting distance.

Well, if the microbes are spayed, we won't have to worry about them breeding.

Can anyone remember the gents bog (it really could be) at the Sidmouth late nights extras in the late 70s - that was a definitely non water based system. It was more (recycled) beer and cider based.

I always wondered about those bottles of stuff that's sold as "eau de toilette" or even as "toilet water". Who would use such a thing, and why? And why pay for it if you do use it, when you could just dip it out for free?

Someone suggested to Essex Girl that she should try using some toilet water, but as she was getting some, the seat fell down and cracked her on the head.

I believe that comes from the old days when your preparations for the day (getting dressed, washing your face, etc.) were referred to as your "toilette." While you were making your toilette, you might put on some eau de toilette. :-) At least that's my guess, anyhow.

Open Mike,

Yes, I have a Sunmar composting toilet. But it's strictly for rainy or cold weather use. I much prefer the woods themselves if the weather's nice.

BTW I think Mudcatter couple Batgoddess and Curmudgeon also have a composter.

They do. I always feel as if I have left some business unfinished when I leave their bathroom without the reassuring finale of a flush.

Nothin' quite like a good shit in the bush to remind me of my roots. Wish I'd taken pictures of all my favourite outhouses over the years 'cause they're all gone now. Ah, memories...

Mooh.

I have a number of photos taken over a few years of the best "loos with a view" but my all time favourite is the one at the refuge in the White Mountains in Crete which is just a wooden seat with a hole cantilevered several hundred feet over a (fortunately inaccessible) gorge.
A close runner-up is the ladies on the paddle steamer "Waverley" which is situated above one of the paddles. Talk about the shit hitting the fan!

I shat in outhouses til I was fourteen and I can tell you I don't miss 'em at all. You guys are goin' a little bit over the edge with them "good old" coldass-open seasonfor mosquitos/deerflys/bullflys,horseflys'target-humanwaste-runoff-into-the-water-supply days. I'll take the modern day shitter, given the choice. It's right down the hall, there ain't no flys and it's always room temperature. Yassuh...A bear shits in the woods only because he ain't got a house wif running water..

Yerz,
Tweed (Thoroughly sold on modern day sanitation)

The word itself (toilet) is from the French for a cloth bag used for holding clothes.

It was used to mean morning preparations to face the world (washing and primping, etc.) long before the plumbing device became common. Toilet water is scented lotion for use in making your morning preparations, much like after shave lotion.
