21 Nov 03 - 11:06 AM (#1058546) Subject: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: Sorcha Hi, all! Mr. Sorcha is a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructor by way of his police job....the 5th year class is saving pull tabs from soda, beer, etc. cans to give to the Children's Hospital in Denver. The classes have a contest to see who can collect the most. Somehow, I'm not really sure, the hospital can cash in the tabs for care, or something. I thought it would be neat if we could collect tabs from all over the world and give them to his class and help them win the contest. If you are interested in saving tabs and mailing them to me, PM me and I'll send you my address. Thanks! |

21 Nov 03 - 11:30 AM (#1058565) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: GUEST,MMario Sorcha - what kind of pull tabs? They used to have ones that actually came off - but I haven't seen one in YEARS! Or is it just the little rocker levers they save now? cause the tab goes down into the can... |

21 Nov 03 - 11:39 AM (#1058571) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: jeffp Hate to be a wet blanket, but is your husband sure this is real? The reason I ask is that this sounds very much like an urban legend. This link to Snopes will explain my skepticism. Also, I went to the Children's Hospital of Denver's web site and it makes no mention whatsoever of any sort of pull tab collection scheme. He might want to check further. I hope it's legit, but probably worth investigation. jeffp |

It's not like it's going to hurt anybody. MMario, just the regular ones on cans--you do have to rock them back and forth to get them to come off.... |

21 Nov 03 - 11:51 AM (#1058578) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: Stilly River Sage My kids have been collecting those for years. I think McDonald's has something they do in this area, they redeem them for cash. I've never seen it happen, but places like the daycare where my children used to stay always collected them. There are still a few sandwich baggies with the tabs around here. As suggested, it's the "rocker" thingie that pushes open the can (remember how people used to either litter the old pull tabs or drop them into the can? I'm sure more than a few people hurt themselves swallowing those things, and even more people complained about the litter). SRS |

21 Nov 03 - 11:54 AM (#1058580) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: GUEST,MMario yeah - but they made fantastic "chain mail" *grin* there are a number of different programs - the collection centers evidnlty recycle the aluminium. Some of the programs kick back a percentage to the collectors - some don't. all seem to be worthwhile programs that I've found. |

21 Nov 03 - 02:51 PM (#1058670) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: Clinton Hammond There are NO charities that collect pull tabs... And if they did, there's nothing they can do with them after they're collected... But I know ALL kinds of people who WILL pay for them, to make stuff like -THIS- They'll pay by the link, or by the pound... If anyone is serious, I'll ask what the going rate is... you folks can sell them, and use the MONEY for fund raising... |

21 Nov 03 - 03:01 PM (#1058677) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: GUEST,MMario Clinton - if NO chaity collects - then how come Ronald McDonald house executives have issued statements about the progress of their collections? They collect and sell it as scrap. |
|
21 Nov 03 - 03:32 PM (#1058693) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: Clinton Hammond Can you source that MMario? (Cause if I AM wrong, I'll start saving them for charity again...) Cause I went looking last year sometime, when my wife came home from work and said her office was collecting them... All I found were debunkers... The cost of storing and shipping a pull-tab is twice what the alluminum in the pull tab is worth... So the idea of selling them for scrap makes very little sense (Cents?) |
|
21 Nov 03 - 03:37 PM (#1058696) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: Clinton Hammond The snopes quote on Ronald McDonald House... ---------------------------- Seeing as how folks were bound and determined to collect pull-tabs for charity, in 1987 McDonald's found it a good idea to get into the act. Their Pop Tab Collection program is a response to pull tab mania, and although its web presence perpetuates the myth that the tabs are made of a purer form of aluminium than the rest of the can, it at least provides folks with a place to dump the tabs they've been hoarding over the years in the belief they could use them to purchase dialysis time for an ailing child. Tabs dropped off at various McDonald's are taken to a local recycling company, and the money made from selling them for their scrap value is given to the local Ronald McDonald House to help defray operating costs. (Ronald McDonald houses are inexpensive family lodgings located near hospitals. Families of sick children stay there so as to be close to their hospitalized child. Typically, it costs the house $40 a night a room to operate and families are asked to make a donation of $10 a night when they stay. The shortfall is made up through various charitable endeavors, of which the pull-tab collection and recycling program is but one.) It needs be stressed yet again that pull tabs are far from "found money" — even the Ronald McDonald House gets only 40 cents a pound for them (or $474 per million tabs, according to their web page). You'd still do far more good organizing a local soda can recycling program and donating the proceeds of same to Ronald McDonald House (or any other charity). -------------------------------------- So, honestly sorcha... collect 'em, and the folks -I- know will buy 'em off ya! |

21 Nov 03 - 03:43 PM (#1058705) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: GUEST,MMario I think it works to some extent because it's something people can do - and when there are local centers you can drop your stuff off at rather then shipping them out, etc. Like the pepsi proof of purchase stuff - If I had donated the cost of mailing the P.o.P. stuff to the school rather then sending them the items - the school may have been monatarily ahead of the game - but... |

21 Nov 03 - 06:44 PM (#1058812) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha Needs Pull Tabs, Please From: wysiwyg Of course McDonald's is perfectly pleased to sell you a Happy Meal when you come in with the little darling clutching a baggie fill of tabs, and no doubt soccer mama must have her Big Mac and Diet Coke as long as they're visiting, eh? And after all there is the playground handy, maybe the next birthday party gets booked.... Multiply that by all the good little tab-collectors and their families... The PR for doing good with RMcD House is the point, not the actual dollars netted. It's a promotion-- part of a marketing plan. ~S, perhaps a tad cynical after running a do-good nonprofit! |

Clinton, who did you say these people were that buy them?? (Other than my local reclclers.....grin) I don't really have a LOT, but hate to just dump them, and I'm going to keep pulling mine off because I find it easier to drink out of the can that way. |
