ADD: Scarborough Fishermen (Richard Grainger)

I heard a wonderful song composed and performed by Yorkshire singer Richard Grainger - Scarborough Fishermen. I've gotten most of the words off of his CD, but there are several places where I'm not hearing it right and am unsure of the lyrics. Do any of you know this song? Thanks.

From: Peter Kasin

Teeside singer/songwriter Richard Grainger has a beautiful song called "Scarborough Fisherman." I've gotten all the lyrics except for one line, which baffles me. I've played it on his CD multiple times, but just can't hear the words clearly on a particular verse. The 5th verse goes:

"Skipper's in the wheelhouse with a mountain of sea
(then the next three words I'm not getting)...looking down upon thee"

Again, those three words are the only part of lyrics I'm looking for. Any help is much appreciated.

Dick,

I'm not very good at picking out the chords from a song by just listening to the track and I'm even worse at trying to pick out the pick sequence.

If anyone has got the chords it would be much appreciated.

Chalkie, I wonder if you would do us a favor, and when posting, just put your name (Chalkie) in the "From:" window? It just makes it easier for us the mod's. We don't allow anonymous posting, and sometimes when the name isn't in that window things get inadvertently deleted. Your posts are a positive addition to the forum, so we don't want that to happen.
    Thanks.

Chalkie,

Richard is in Canada at the moment but I will be seeing him at the end of the month when he returns. If you've had no luck by then I'll ask him for them and get them to you somehow.

Better still why not come to the Osmotherley Folk gathering in North Yorks on Aug 29th-31st which he is organising and is playing at (amongst others!) and ask him yourself?

You can find details here .

Cheers

Paul

The Chorus, sounds to me like this.
if you were in G use a Gmajor[or Modal chord]then to E minor,First cadence ends on a C major chord.Carry on with C major next change Dmajor chord.
then same thing again G, a passing Eminor chord through to C major, just before the end a brief d7 to G Major.thats only a rough approximation done in 5 minutes.
I prefer to use dadgbd rather than standard.
Richard probably plays it in DADGAD.I sang this song with Richard and The Endeavour Shantymen,at Scarborough Sea Fest, unfortunately I didnt notice the chords he was using.Richard is the best person to ask,he is Darklander on this forum,so you can PM him.,when he returns.Dick Miles

Thanks Dick for the "rough approximation" on the chords, I'll have a tinkle tonight and see how it pans out.

Thanks also to Banjiman, for the tip about the Osmotherly festival - also note a separate thread on this. We are away the previous weekend in the Lakes so I doubt if we'll come up for the full weekend but we might make it for the Saturady or Sunday.

For those who want the lyrics here they are.

SCARBOROUGH FISHERMEN
(Richard Grainger)

Chorus

Here's to the fisher lads bold as can be.
Riding the swell on the cold northern sea.
Ear to the Sounder, Eye on the scan.
Scarborough fishermen on northern grounds.

No weather's to rough when the nets never full.
A friend of the wind and the old seagull.
It's farewell to Mary love, farewell to thee.
Scarborough fishermen out on the sea.

Southwards to Yarmouth, north past the Tyne.
East to the Dogger Bank the shoals for to find.
It's night and day working, filling our hold.
The North Sea's the place where we dig for our gold.

Prices are high, stock's getting low.
More work on this deck boys than ever before.
It's sodden all day without any sleep.
Scarborough fishermen out on the deep.

Boy on the deck how do you feel.
With ice in your hauling' your nerves made of steel.
It'll make you a man, you'll live a hard life.
While you dream of your girl, of warm sheets and dark nights.

The skipper's in the wheelhouse with a mountainous sea.
Towering above looking down upon me.
Prepare for the crash boys, no time to pray.
Scarborough lads facing danger each day.

Now the weeks over and we are done in.
It's all back to Scarborough, neat as a pin.
With beer in our belly no longer we'll roam.
Scarborough fishermen on the way home.

Here's Richard's own transcription, from his Website. The lyrics on this Website are not always accurate. I made a few corrections, but resisted making more.

I was there too, the festival was a cracking time, Richard often gets a lot of criticism but for me he does a grand job and Scarboro' is a great miss.

it really becomes community music when the local school children are involved singing the songs
