billy pigg deleted?

I have just done a Google search for a CD to replace my worn out vinyl copy of Billy Pigg's Border Minstrel. I found that it had been re-issued in 2002 on Leader (the original record label). However when I looked on Amazon they had the CD listed but said that it had been discontinued.

So soon?

I cannot find a web site for Leader (I am sure it is not the Unique Leader Europe Death Metal record label!).

Does anyone know what has happened to this record?

Adrian

That link above ia an old web page from 2001. They have a new web site here which doesnt seem to list it under the folk category.

Leader went bust and the remains were bought up by you-know-who, so it's anybody's guess what you can get your hands on now...

Treewind is quite correct, the Leader back catologe was bought by **********, and what was purchaced and still remains in his ownership is anybody's guess. A CD version of Billy Pigg's Border Minstrel is available from ********, although, beware, it is possibly a CDR and may not be a great player, or sound too good. How you feel about dealing with ******** is up to you. There are many in the folk world who are more than happy to continue to deal and trade with ***** and others who beleive him to be a blight on the face of the earth for "robbing artists" of their royalties. Himself or his record company are not the only ones to be accused or found guilty of this and on the subject of "robbing artists" and royalties, I wonder how many blank CDR discs were sold today?

You could always try e-BAY or Mudcat for a "new" old record, Billy Pigg was a ledgendry piper and this album is gem well worth searching out.

cheers

You can probably get the cd via retailers such as http://www.musikfolk.co.uk/, who have it listed. What sort of quality you will get is another matter; Dave Bulmer and Celtic Music of Harrogate have a bad reputation, and, if the experiences of a number of people whose records have been reissued by that label (typically on CDR and without their knowledge) is anything to go by, no royalty would go to Billy Pigg's heirs from any sale. Second hand copies of the vinyl can be had; http://www.rockinworld.com/ has one listed at present at $15.00.

I've been off raking through my CDs, here is another Small Pipes Gem on CD, released on Topic, TSC487, this is a selection of stuff from Tom Clough, Joe Hutton, The High Level Ranters, The Cut and Dry Band and some tracks from Billy Pigg, including the classic "The Wild Hills O' Wannie". The CD is called "The Northumberland Small Pipes" and is a delight.
    cheers

I have a strange feeling that if 'certain people' have good music and do not release it to the general public ( or even US !!) then there is not a lot wrong with asking if any catters have a copy they could puit on tape or mini disc as a NON commerciual favour.

Thanks everyone for this information. Little did I know that my query would run in the infamous Mr B***** and C***** Music. And a moral dilemma about buying a CD.

I think I will try to record my old vinyl copy on to CD and try to clean it up with some software I think I have lurking on this PC which came with the sound card.
