BS: My pressie has arrived!!!

Subject: BS: My pressie has arrived!!!
From: Sandra in Sydney

It wasn't a card from the postie to alert me to a parcel, but the parcel itself hand-delivered by my neighbour, Glenn, who shares my post office box!

Decent sized parcel (about shoe box size) - I haven't tried shaking it & I WON'T open it for a month. But I think I recognise the name of the sender.

Thankyou dear Santa.

Last year my parcel didn't arrive till 6th Feb, it walked & floated a meandering course all the way from Tennessee where Giac posted it mid Nov. It's apparent non-arrival worried us both, it did. This year I'm the first to report a pressie has arrived.

WOW !!!!!!!It must have caught the Express on the Vladivostok to Perth leg and avoided VicRail completely!!!! i will leave it to you to decide when to open it, as different folks have diiferent Resistances to closed boxes!!!Using SS's law of prezzie keeping!!where R= K* days left to Christmas/(no of days since birthday or last prezzie) provided K is <30 my resistance <0

Santa - I am mathematically dis-inclined, or is that algebraically ditto. Please don't confuse me with complicated stuff, but I do agree it was a Good Thing it caught the Express.

A simpler formula is to divide the number of days between now and the holiday, birthday, etc., by your age. This will give you a more realistic waiting period. (Note: A calculation resulting in any number containing a decimal, such as 2.0, signifies that the gift should have been opened yesterday.)

Mine arrived a few days ago. The amazing thing is that I didn't even sign up for one. Of course, I'm not sure how much of a seceret it is anymore as I know who sent it. But I'll still let everyone else do some guessing for now.

I got my present today!! A big box arrived by courier - the Royal Mail doesn't do things like parcels any more.... and of course, being me, I opened it!

It's the most beautiful old fashioned box which will definately be saved for future use and inside there are lots of other little parcels. They're all wrapped so they will stay that way. They're going to the secret hiding place with the other presents until we get the decorations up.

Thank you so much, Secret Santa James in Virginia - still a secret because you didn't put your Mudcat name in!

Everything seems to be in one piece - no suspicious rattling sounds or sticky patches and the copious amounts of tissue will be recycled.

Thank you again, for giving me the biggest grin I've had for ages!

The nice student-sized elf at my postal station had me sign a parchment-like paper saying I wasn't sending explosives or nasty stuff through the mail. I was a bit vague, while remaining accurate, about the contents of that package.

Only Two Weeks 'til it gets there! The reindeer have their antlers crossed hoping it arrives safely (they only deliver on December 31--the rest of the time they're bulking up and helping pack the bag of goodies!)

I refreshed this earlier to bring it back onto the screen and later realized it could be misconstrued. I haven't seen anything from my Santa for a while, and no package yet. Perhaps it is time to pull out the poem again and look for more clues. I've established that this is someone from the UK, I'm guessing around London. My geography (sans an atlas) got me that far, anyway.

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My package arrived today. I have been sort-of semi-good. I have opened enough of the outer wrapping to know that my Santa is in the UK and I have a rough idea of where from the postcards, but there are 3 wrapped parcels which I am going to try and not open till Christmas (well maybe a few days before as I'm going off to Woodford on the 22nd). So now I'm puzzling over the few clues I have been given. Hmmmmmm.

Oooh this is fun! Now I'm feeling guilty 'cos I haven't sent my santee's present yet. Must get busy!

Been doing a bit of sleuthing, based on what my Santa said on the postcard, and on which mudcatters from that area are involved in this, and I think I have narrowed it down to three likely contenders, with one of you definitely having the front running.

So SS, is the answer in the parcels, or will I still have to do more sleuthing after I open them?

I heard a thump out on the porch, and found a package perched on my mailbox. This is it, my Secret Santa is revealed. It took under a week from the UK to the TX. I haven't opened the box yet, we'll save that for Christmas. As to geography, I can see that if I had gotten out the atlas I could have put a name to a county closer to the channel than the city of London (but that is on the right side of the island!) I probably could have even risked the guess of Kent, because I used to be pretty good at the locations over there when I was reading more British lit. I still wouldn't have figured out who it was, because I don't know where all of our British Mudcatters live.

I love the way you spell your name--over here all of the silent consonants would have been dropped and it would look different.

Now, I wonder if the box I mailed last week has made it on its appointed rounds?

Mine came yesterday and I opened it! (Hey, life's too short.) I have a box of Terry's chocolates, a lovely day book with floral paintings, a desk calendar with some fabulous photographs, and a beautiful black scarf with white music notes on it. As the desk calendar was created by Beachcomber, I have reason to believe that my Santa is the same.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

(oh gosh, this is so much fun!!!)

But now I kinda feel bad, because I didn't carefully wrap all the items in the package I sent to my Santee! As it was going overseas, I went for safety and functionality rather than colorfulness. Santee, I hope you will understand! :-)

I typed in a very long post only to have my computer crash and it looks like it didn't get saved so let me try this again....

I admit it, I gave in and opened the gift! But my SS PM'd me and told me to! Said something about there being stuff in there to be used before Christmas....boy was SHE right!! It's awesome! JenEllen is another in a list of GREAT Secret Santas I've had the pleasure to draw my name! Wait'll ya hear this.....

Inside the box were two bear ornaments, personalized with the names Joshua and Jacob! For those of you that haven't heard they are the names of my miricale twins! Sometime in the next week, we will be putting up our tree and they will be the first ornaments hung! There were also two cassette tapes, one with some of JenEllen's favorite Christmas songs, the first of which was Bob and Doug McKenzie's Great White North twelve days of Christmas. My daughter and I listened to it on the way to her school this morning and we both laughed like idiots all the way...somehow each additional "and a beer...." is funnier than the last! The other tape is a collection of kids stories that originally came from Sorcha and JenEllen loved them so much she decided to pass a copy along to me and my family. It's the gift that keeps on giving! I can't wait to share the stories with Joshua and Jacob. Also the there was a jar of apple butter that looks like it was homemade...YUM! My father-in-law LOVES apple butter and my first thought was to share a little with him...and I thought, NO! hahahaha...

As if that isn't enough there's a wrapped present that I think I will hold off on until Christmas morning (JenEllen's suggestion). What a great year! Christmas is always a special time and this makes it that much better! thanks JenEllen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wheeee! Came home from a long day in town to find that Santa had arrived while I was gone (dang it) and left a large plastic bag hanging from my gate post. I got it down, opened the bag, and inside, at the bottom, was a box, a cardboard box wound round and round with festive duct tape and deeply dented. OH NO! I thot...it's been Postal-ed! I carefully pulled it out and, cringing, rattled it, and was overjoyed to hear no alarming rattles.

No sign on the outside of the box, as to SS's identity, but definitely from aX the pond. I carefully opened the box and found 3 treasures inside, plus a card. Luckily, I have a dispensation from the Father of All Santas and no will power, so opened all presents immediately. I started with the card, so now know that Firekat, and Tig and Badger, are my benefactors.

Thank you, thank you for these great gifts! First off, a nifty hair brush, much like the one my English friend Linda has which I've coveted for some time, but soooo much better, as it's been personalized with some very clever woodburned decoration on the back. Is this your work, Kat? I've never owned a brush with my name on it! Next, a wonderfully inventive twisted wire sculpture--leaping dolphins, and also personalized with my own Mudcat monicker. And last, but definitely not least, a book I've been dying to read by one of my favorite authors: Bill Bryson's "Mother Tongue." Thank you again, Firekat, Tig and Badger for such thoughtful and creative gifts.

Now with great pleasure I'm off to read my new book....

Oh, oh, your heart must have been in your mouth when you read my message...it REALLY would be if you knew that tonight is trash night and everything is put in the bin. I don't know what made me look one more time in the box before tossing it...at least hasty stupidity was followed by native caution!

I am truly overwhelmed with this last present! How could you know that silver bangles are just about the only jewelry I wear aside from some silver rings my husband made many years ago. I adore them! I am wearing them now and doubt I will ever take them off. They are STUNNING! The designs are sheer sculpture, off as well as on, they fit perfectly and I just love them. Really enjoyed your note too...found that as well. Glad to know another reader!

Thanks all over again and 10 times over. You have made my Christmas!

Love from your appreciative, grateful and admiring Santee...

Oh... The CD's and the guitar strings and the refrigerator magnet are cool too.

But I LOVE my rock!!!

Thanks For the Loot, Linn (Batgoddess)

Bruce is from Florida, where there are no rocks, see. He has to make his own rocks in his pottery shop.

Easily amused? Moi? Most certainly!

But even the most jaded among us would find this particular rock enthralling. It came all the way from New Hampshire. From Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon no less. Man! I'm glad they've got a composting toilet 'cause if this stuff's what the ground is made of I'd hate like hell to try to dig an outhouse hole!

I really love my rock!

Dear Peg,

I'm so pleased about that...one never knows how successfully the snail attached to the pigeon's leg will negotiate The Pond!

I hope that you will enjoy them...I have today sent another little thing which I hope you will also like (I think you will but am fearful that you may have it already knowing your musical tastes...in which case please feel free to pass it on to a person of your choice and I will send something else) since they are indeed rather small packages and since anything I could make you myself would be rather larger and heavier. Hopefully this will arrive by Yule or shortly thereafter.

I also have some studio time planned in the New Year and, if the results are not too embarassing, I will also send you a copy of the fruits of that particular endeavour. It will, however, not be at all in the same style...!

I posted a few more hints over in the "Goofy Hints" thread by the way!

All the very best,

Your Secretive Yule-Person

It's not just granite! It may be mostly quartz and feldspar and mica, but it's got nice blood red GARNETS scattered through it. The garnets range in size from grain of sand size to pea size. Lovely color.

I had to dig through snow to get to them, so I couldn't choose the best of what was available. Bruce got what came up in my mittened hand.

But that's the stuff we're sitting on. Fortunately there's enough dirt and leaf mold to support all the trees (and my garden). The beaches (25 miles away) are even streaked with garnet sand sometimes after a storm.

(I'm glad Bruce appreciates a fine rock when he sees one!)

Ooooh, Bat Goddess, if I send you a Texas fossil, will you send me some of your granite? It sounds lovely! I grew up in the Pacific Northwest with a much bigger mix of rocks than down here in Texas (Limestone is king through much of this area--you have to travel to a distance to find places where ancient buried mountain ranges extrude and present igneous and metamorphic rocks and minerals). Granite can be one of the most amazing rocks. I love a good pegmatite also (musch bigger chunks, with crystal definition, than is what is defined in granite).

There is a very nice tutorial on types of igneous rocks here, including granite.

Mine came! Mine came! I did get pressies from Santa about 55 years ago but then it wasn't MY OWN SPECIAL Santa. I'm so excited. Opened the ouside packet but I'm leaving the inside wrapping on 'till Christmas morning. My dear Secret Santa, I haven't given up on trying to find out who you are - perhaps it will be revealed when I open up my CDs. Wow CDs!! I can feel that's what they are! Unless it's one more secret disguise. I'm studying the location list and every other list I can find. And there's the recycled envelope with the name half blacked out and the UK postmark! But your postcard came from New York? Are you being very, very devious my dear Santa? Do you live in West (something)wich? somewhere in the UK? New York? Does your name end in lly? I'll find you somehow, unless it's like naming someone in folklore when you mustn't because of the danger of harming them. I wouldn't want to do that. Let me know if it's like that and I'll keep the secret.
Anyway SS, Thank you!! Thank you!! I really love this idea. Joybelle full of Joy.

Oh, bird in the Bush, you're anxious to know
Where on earth do I live. Don't search high and low.
New York or Old England? Which could it be?
Maybe it's neither - I'm devious, me.
But there's clues on the envelope for your inspection
Which may be of use to find the direction.
West Greenwich, West Norwich, West Sandwich, maybe
For the rest of it isn't that easy to see
But I'm not letting on if I'm colt or I'm filly
Though as for my name - it's not Sally or Willy.
Opening the CDs won't help you to guess
For there's nothing in there points to my address
If like Rumpelstiltskin my name you discover
It won't harm me at all. Have a guess. Have another.
If none of this helps you, well ain't that invidious
You have to remember that Albion's perfidious

The pressies are from Tig & The Badger & Firecat (THANKS!) The funny thing is I didn't understand the card sen along with it until yesterday.

For those who can't see me holding it up to the screen - it shows to reindeer decorating an outdoor christmas tree. There are three reindeer falling from the sky. The first reindeer asks "Snow?" And the second replies: "No, just Reindeer." Scarry that it took a week for me to get it, huh?

Beware of puns...

Anyway, I GOT MINE! And no, I have absolutely no self control at all and I really needed something to get into the spirit. Add in the fact that it said 'cookies' on the customs slip and I had to make sure they didn't go stale. (They were packaged biscuits, but I didn't know that.) Naturally, I didn't find the imperiled cookies until I opened the last package. I got a whole bunch of gorgeous beeds and beading supplies including wire, which I'm pretty sure I didn't hallucinate (see below), a picture frame with autumn leaves on it and... a jar of Marmite.

Now, the wire. I unwrapped it, admired it (I've never used it before and wanted to play with it), and set it down with the other stuff until I found those cookies. When I'd saved the poor things, I gathered everything together to move it to a better location and THE WIRE WAS GONE! I hadn't moved from the chair, I remember exactly where I set it down, and it WASN'T THERE. I've torn this area apart (read: I cleaned up piles of stuff) and I can't find it. I wonder if some mousie has dragged it off to decorate with or perhaps made a snare for a neighbor's cat. I wonder if the fairies are playing games or there's some wire-sucking black hole in here. It's weird.*

I'll let you know when I've found it.

Anyway,
THANK YOU
LIZ THE SQUEAK,
MANITAS AND LIMPIT

*My mom once was sitting in a chair doing a crossword puzzle in one of those spiral booklets. She reached to answer the phone. When she was done talking and went back to the crossword puzzle on her lap, it wasn't there. I later found it behind the bookshelves which were crammed full of books. It was about 7' wide and 7' high with stuff on top that came to about a foot below the ceiling, and 6' away from her. The book would have had to fly off her lap, travel through the air and slide through a bunch of books or go farther and higher to sail over the bookshelves. It would have had to do so without both of us hearing or seeing it OR her feeling it launching. Maybe this sort of stuff runs in the family. (Yes, I looked behind the bookcase for the wire, just in case.)

OK Guv, it's a fair cop. You got me bang to rights. I'll have to make it harder next year. But you were out on the Hawthornes - it is the stadium of (perfidious) West Bromwich Albion FC.

I was in America in October with the Shellbacks, where I met my 2002 Santee, Jeri, at the FSGW Getaway. But I don't know if we've got an Australian tour planned!

I don't know, Bruce, maybe. I'm starting to believe anything's possible. I'm currently terrified LtS will come in here later and say "Wire? What wire?"

I lost a pair or scissors today while wrapping packages. I had a piece of freshly-cut wrapping paper in one hand and needed to trim it further. No scissors. I turned around to go into the living room to look for them. Luckily, a brain cell sputtered and kicked in for long enough for me to realize I'd JUST cut the paper off the roll. (The scissors were under it.) I think I need a shitload of Ginko or something.

Well, I've just seen a communication from my secret santa a few days ago. Let me just say I didnt complain about the wrapping paper, I just said it looked strange. I like strange things. Your identity is mysterious. You address me as Gregster, which is a Bobert habit, but you cant be Bobert because you sent cryptic references which quizzically suggest your name is Clancy. And Bobert name isnt Clancy.
ANyway, i dutifully resist the temptation to open the parcel till Christmas Day, and hope there will be some more identity clues therin.(And I know a bit about resisting temptation, it is TWO MONTHS TOMORROW that I gave up smoking. So I seriously hope this parcel doesnt contain Golden Virginia.

Rest assured, your gift is now in the mail and, with luck, should
arrive before Christmas Day!

And yay again!

I also was in need of a gift: also didn't know the FedEx envelope I WAS a gift. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear?! A lovely, personal, real-life fairy tale by our own CapriUni! It was written and illustrated by her and DEDICATED to me and our restaurant. Lovely story, lovely sentiment, and just the nicest present I think I've ever had.

I has just got home from school with my daughter who is suddenly very sick: we hope it's "only" the flu. I tucked her in, cuddled up, and read her this wonderful story and it made both of us so HAPPY!

May I steal a line from one of your own songs?:

"Just trade all your worries for dreams and bright visions.
Let all your fears fade away in the night."

Thank you so much, Ann. And CatsPhiddle for arranging all this happiness for so many people all over the GLOBE!

Dear Santa,

I have found you out!! It took awhile; you were quite clever. I am sorry, I can never wait to open pressies once they've arrived, esp. from a Secret Santa! )Checking by the name on the return addy, all I could find was a piper by that name who'd passed away, so...I was wondering what might have come from the Other Side, but THEN, I read "Motherclay" and that gave you away!

I LOVE my Motherclay Santa!! And, the wild rice, honey and book are wonderful and so thoughtful. How wonderful that the rice was harvested from your friend's place and now, I can taste the local honey from your region! I love honey and rice, both, and anything by Keillor!!! AND, Rena's CD, autographed and all! I've only had a chance to listen to a couple of cuts, but I really like what I hear!!

Thank yew, thank yew, thank yew! I'll post a picture of my VERY OWN, Hand-sculptured, signed and numbered, Double Image Santa from your very own clay pit in a day or two. (The house is in a state of choas at the moment, making room for daughter and our new grandson, so things are not where they should be, such as the digital camera, etc!)**bg**

At one point I'd told CatsPHIDDLE that I was going to withdraw from the Secret Santa thing this year as it just seemed I was going to be too swamped with helping our daughter and grandson, etc. BOY, am I glad I changed my mind!!

Thanks, Santa and thanks to Khatt, too!!

Yesterday was quite the day.

In a fit of holiday magnanimity and on the last day of work before the company closes for two weeks over the holidays, my part time employer, Technology Business Research, "terminated" my entire office of part time surveyers (that's three of us). Merry Christmas, eh? How long have you worked here, not counting tomorrow, and can you please get your stuff out of our desks?

Ah, well.

After a conference with my co-unemployed at the local Burger King, a stop at Employment Security to file a claim, and the credit union to cash my next-to-last check (quick!), we actually found a parking place betwixt the Post Office and The Press Room and discovered packages from Mudcat Secret Santas waiting for us at the post office!

I didn't even get to see the outside of the packages (I'll let Tom post his own comments on his gifties) until after arriving home after the Friday night Press Room session.

Wow! And Tom is INSISTING on me being a good kid and NOT OPENING ANYTHING (except the really neat personalized card and the unwrapped stuff) UNTIL CHRISTMAS MORNING!!! He can't keep me from shaking and poking, though . . .

What great fun! -- 12 wrapped gifts for the 12 days of Christmas! This is too cool for words. Thank you, Partridge! (That's "seasonal" I guess. Good hints!) And the cats thank you, too, for the catnip treats! The musical note ornament is a wonderful addition to our musical tree decorations.

Can't wait til Christmas morning!

Yippee!!!! My presents arrived! I was so excited I couldn't wait til Christmas!

They are a southwestern design bandana (I love them, I have one on me whenever I camp!), a gorgeous book of painted ponies from the New Mexico project: The Trail of Painted Ponies, and an object (is it ceremonial) woven from wheat grasses that is exquisite!

I was taught to weave small baskets out of yellow pine needles by an old indian woman named Mrytle McCoy who used to have a junk shop in Marianna, Florida. Looking at these natural objects thrills me so much and this one appears to be hand held and ceremonial. I could spend days in the Indian exhibits at the Smithsoniam and I love to read about Indians. (This triggered a memory of a patient I had in the 70's in Michigan who had built Indian digs for himself in his yard where he stayed. He would come to his appointments with his bow and arrows in a quiver (all hand made) and we made him leave them at the front desk!!)

So comeon, Santa tell me what it is if you aren't going to reveal yourself!!

The painted ponies are evidently all over New Mexico as a result of this fund raising project so I will have to visit to see them.
Anyone who knows me knows I love art. These are really special Santa and I am thrilled. Thank you so much for your thoughtful pressies!

Love, harpgirl

Well, if the stoopid elves got the right pressie into the right box, and if it didn't get bounced around too much behind the stampeding ponies, it was supposed to be a woven harp. Mrs. Claws, who is the one who made it, said that the stoopid elves were supposed to wait until she got bits of ribbon on it where the bits of string are. So-if you wouldn't mind finishing it...

From: GUEST,Harpgirl's Mrs. Claws

Dear Harpgirl,

It was a rough week when that harp got woven, truth to tell, short of time even though I don't spend such an unconscionable amount of it chatting on Mudcat as the Mr. does. (Do I detect a note of Bah, humbug in myself? I do enjoy the news from the outside world that he brings me, from Mudcat, as I slave in the salt mines.) Anyway, he's right, there was meant to be bits of ribbon to cover the bits of string that hold it together, and it is meant to be a harp--the Celtic kind. And I have to find a source for better wheat.

Re the ponies, they really are beautiful and yes, some have been bought and are on display around the state as public art. There was even a shop in the mall this Christmas with other work by some of the artists--more affordable, you betcha--some lizards and turtles that appeal to me (hint to Mr. Claws). That's not what I meant to tell you. There's also been some scandal involved--I never remember detail of scandals, something to do with the Trail organizers taking too much of the credit and the profit from the event, I think. And I was going to suggest that you look for them (and at them) online--but I can't get the website, "gopaintedponies", to open right now. You could try it, though. My home page won't open, either. I think the computer has Christmas stress syndrome.

I would invite you to stay with us if you come to visit the ponies, but as you know, we live at the North Pole.

I guess now we all know why Mr. Claws doesn't let me chat very often. Merry Christmas.

From: CapriUni

I opened my Secret Santa pressie today, rather than waiting for Christmas, because it was clearly marked as being from the "Solstice Faery"... Inside the big pack were several smaller packages.

One was a bag of chocolate truffles -- yummy!!

A second one, wrapped in deep purple tissue paper, contained a pair of beautiful red candles, painted with spirals and other designs -- definitely too beautiful to burn!!

A third package contained a beautiful ceramic pin (broach) with a viking-age like design of a rider on horse. It almost makes me want to get dressed up, so I can have an excuse to wear it in public.

Then, there was a cd-rom with my Santa singing four of her songs, and she has a lovely, deep voice. The note inside the jewel case promised that there is a full CD of her work coming in January. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears perked for it, I expect it will be a good one!

But the last inner package was the biggest of all: I tore off the tissue paper, and slipped it out of the bubble wrap to find a Sandman book by Neil Gaimon: "Book III: Dream Country." I'd forgotten that I'd said in my hints list that friends had threatened me with strongly recommended it...

So: Yay!! Chocolate and pretties, and music, and a new book! if that's not Yule, I don't know what is...

Oh, and she included a lovely card with a moose head on the outside, and a hint on the inside -- her Mudcat nick starts and ends with "A" and there are two blanks in the middle... That could only mean: Alba! She only just joined us in February of this year, so this may be a bit late in coming, but: WELCOME anyway!!

The Portland Collection was a sure thing, since you said you wanted it. I LOVE that tunebook!

The jewelry was a risk, since I didn't know if the length or style of the beads would be something you liked. You said you liked periwinkle though, and that was about as periwinklish as I could find. Do you usually wear dangly earrings? The wires are nickel free, by the way.

Robin, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Yep, dangly earrings are what I like best. And I did notice that they were periwinkle, a color I love, and one that goes with lots of my stuff.

Thanks Jeri, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too!

Hints, hm... well... er... I'm probably not one you'd think of as being a US catter if you knew me. I sing with a maritime themed group of which several members are catters and am currently spending a lot of my time at SIO.

Thing of hints is almost as hard as thinking of presents so I'll leave it at that for a moment and see if it helps.

I haven't opened the wrapped pressies but the signed record album by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger has already blown me away....wow,is all I can say.How like you to give away something so precious, thank you seems inadequate for such a fabulous gift.

The jams and preserves look wonderful ( guess who'll be fighting her kids off on Christmas morning when they make their debut on the breakfast table?). And the toffee/chocolate apple.....how did you know they are my favourite? There will be chocolate all over my face and toffee in my ears before bedtime, I expect.

Thank you. I was feeling just a little low this morning and then got a lovely long phone call from my brother, whom I haven't heard from in many months and then your wonderful presents. I think today is going to be a very good day after all.

Hi Mary,

I am still hoping that your present will arrive before Christmas. I sent it on 8 December, but rain, snow, sleet, wind, hail, earthquakes, floods, droughts, tornadoes might have slowed it down somewhat in its journey. It's Christmas Eve morning here now (6.26 am) but there is almost an extra half-day before your Christmas Eve starts, so my fingers and toes are crossed.

Your Secret Santa - it's hard to chew fingernails with your fingers crossed.

Don't worry dear Santa. I know you're thinking of me, and that has already made my holiday bright. If you're in the time zone I think you're in -- that compounded with the fact that Kentucky is ~20 years behind most civilized commonwealths and countries -- I really wouldn't get too concerned about time and dates.

I am anxious to know who you are. It's always fun having friends around the world. Now I have someone else to pester for pictures and postcards of foreign lands. (and even Tennessee and Ohio are foreign to me)

Well, Blackcatter, I had to open them and I am glad I did. I haven't listened to the Mrs Miller CD all the way through yet so I can't really tell what I think about her singing style, although what I have heard is definitely "different". The blue pottery cup is beautiful. I love the colour, and the little owl is beautiful too, and so are the shells and the stone. I love the notes you wrote about everything.

But, the Ceoltóirí CD, Women of Ireland .... what can I say? I thought I would never hear a music group to rival Sileas or the Poozies, but this is pure musical brilliance - not just technically brilliant, but scintillating, pure voices, pure instrumental parts, beautiful choices of songs and tunes. Wonderful!

Thank you so much. I know, after only one listen, that this is going to be one of my favourite CD's.

Well I've opened mine too and I've already been waxing lyrical over my present on a new thread about Christmas in Australia. It's worth repeating here because I have the most wonderful CDs. One of Old American rural singers from Kentucky and one of Doc Watson and Bill Munroe. Lovely old pictures on the fronts. "Treasure!" my True-love said when he woke up and found me opening the rural singers one. He used to know Gus Mead who co-produced it.

Mine was in my PO box this morning. I opened it when I got home.

Candy - old childhood favorites: sugar water in wax bottles, wax lips, candy buttons, and a candy necklace.

Two cook books: one for wild game and fish, the other is Mary Ann's Gilligans Island Cook Book. (The latter will go well with Aunt Bee's Mayberry CB, which I already have.)

Some old postcards from the 40's.

A video cassette of Mudcatters in performance. I can't wait to see what you guys look like.

A jar of Marmite. Really. I tasted it, although my roommate warned me not to. HOLY COW, DO PEOPLE REALLY EAT THAT STUFF? No wonder my secret Santa chose to remain anonymous. But I have his/her address, and I'm an officer of the law, so I can find out who it is.

But I won't. It seems that possession of Marmite with intent to distribute is not against the law. It should be, but it isn't.

Anyway, thanks, whoever you are. The rest of the presents were great, and now I can contribute to any future Marmite threads that come up.   Merry Christmas. Steve

Oh, Partridge! What a wonderful collection of gifts!

Now I guess I have to actually LEARN how to play the whistle (which I've been nosing around for sometime and haven't out of sheer laziness despite having played clarinet back when God was a lass). It's amazing how similar the shells are, at least to species on the south side of Cape Cod (which is the dividing line on the eastern US coast). I'll have to send you some from the beaches of New Hampshire and Maine -- northern moon snails, surf clams, blue mussels, periwinkles, slipper shells, as well as my favorite tinies. And Yorkshire tea! (Finally!)

Oh, and the Mouldy-made squid!!! (And especial thanks for making it hangable -- we have no level surface space that isn't piled high with something: books, papers, computer stuff.) It's the high point of my collection (not just rubber) of non-edible squid!

The combination of stuff was a delight! Both Tom and I had a grand time opening everything. And it definitely succeeded in making us feel closer to you and our other friends in the UK. (You also gave me some ideas of what to send to my next year's Secret Santee.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

There was also the most delightful little stone cross, which is a freakish work of nature, called a fairy stone - it's so sweet and will be transformed into an earring or maybe a pendant.

I felt really fortunate to have found out that Mystic Seaport has issued the reprint in paperback. If I'd had the dosh, it would have been one of the old hardbacks, though.**bg**

The cards were funny. I went to the local "feed" store to pick up some dog food and those just kind of leapt out at me. Somehow, it seemed the connection between sea shanties and cowboy roping knots was so Mudcat. (Plus, they come from my fmaily's ranching background, too.:-)

Well, Barb'ry, I confess, I sent your items. But I had help--that wonderful crochet shawl was made by Mmario and I bought it in an auction last year. I see he has turned out some more--an auction closed earlier this month on another beauty.

I opened my gift today from my Secret Santa--Rock Chick!!--and found a marvelous fat collection of limericks! They're tongue twisters--I stumbled through a few before the kids insisted on scanning the book and trying a few. This is a great little book and remarkably appropriate for someone from my family:

The limerick's callous and crude,
Its morals distressingly lewd;
It's not worth the reading
by persons of breeding -
It's designed for us vulgar and rude.

Thank you so much!

I've discovered that it probably wouldn't have worked to try shipping a DVD from the UK--the formats are different between the machines in the different countries (this is in reference to a note in the card tucked in with the gift.) Books work anywhere!

I am so happy to hear you liked your gifts. I knew I wouldn't be able to be too mysterious because I wanted to sign your piece and postmark from Minnesota I figured was a give-away. Oh well! You found me out! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, happy new year.
I haven't heard a word from my Santa yet, but I'll hang in there and hope he/she won't forget me!
Take care, Love ya too! Sue

Wonderful!!! I do have a Secret Santa!! And what a thoughtful one she is too. Thank you, Peg, for the CD (of a group that I've never encountered before), the notebook and the chocolates...and the chestnuts and acorns give it a great regional touch. We will even find a good use for the cigar box!

Dear Stilly and Khatt,

I suggest you hold off spilling the beans perhaps until "12th Night"! Some of of us have yet to receive our pressies which are presumably still in the TLC of the appropriate pressie authorities or their appointed agents. Who knows...I might even still receive last years present yet! I know that was posted, more or less when, where and by whom but...! (:>(

I agree, Moo - articles are still stuck in the mail. Oz Post opens tomorrow (monday) & I bet there will still be chrissy goodies in mail boxes. Ops, it's after midnight now, so Oz Post will open a bit later this morning.

I think my pressie was the last 2002 pressie received - it finally arrived around 6th Feb. Khatt had published a list of Santas & Santees by then but I didn't look!

I also agree-I got mine yesterday (the 27th). There are certainly some Mudcatters visiting family and friends for the holidays who won't be home to pick up their mail until after the 1st. Were I Lady Khatt, I wouldn't publish the list before the end of this week, and later may be better. Besides that gives more time for guessing!

dn't listend to the Irish CD myself, but it was reccommended by a friend with excellent taste.

As for Mrs. Miller, I've been a "fan" of hers for years. I've even converted my friend who is the musical director of the local classical radio station. He occasionally plays a selection when he thinks no one is listening.

The other stuff was from a local metaphysical shop. All of it has been infused with very positive energy.

Thanks for the info, Blackcatter. You can tell your friend that I agree about his/her excellent taste. I'm glad it finally arrived, art! Dave Webber and Annie Fentiman are known for their "new" traditional songs and fine harmony singing. They are real favorites among those folkies who like big sing-along type songs. I saw one of their concerts and they also relate wonderful anecdotes about English culture.
The cigar box comes from a tobacco shop in Harvard Square (one of the last of the "old" businesses still thriving); they put them out for sale when they've become empty of cigars...

I want to visit Oz and Newcastle today.

And Giok (John), eat your heart out...

I GOT SOME TIM TAMS!!!!!!!

(Jimmy and Amos, the outside of the package had a note saying it had been delayed because of aviation security practices, whatever that means...but at least they didn't get into the Tim Tams!)

Mary,

I'm so glad it finally arrived. I almost sent you a different CD, by a classical guitar trio called Saffire, because one of the guitarists teaches guitar to my brother-in-law, but then somehow I had the brainwave of sending you the Chris Duncan CD, because his performances at the Newcastle Folk Club years ago have always been a highlight for me.

And, serendipitously (spelling?? word??) you can now gloat about the Tim Tams to everyone else. Just don't tell Catspaw about the Vegemite!

(By the way, I forgot to tell you - a very, very thin scraping of Vegemite on hot buttered toast, with a nice cup of tea is the best way to eat it. You may hate it at first, but you could develop a taste for it. Especially in binge phases when you need a Vitamin B boost.)

And I hope you liked the festive duct tape on the parcel. :-)

Under the new powers of the FBI they have obviously routed my parcel via Botsuwana Land in order to ensure that they are doing everything possible to dampen the effects of terrorism on Christmas. Or perhaps it is the other way around -- preventing the spirit of Christmas from infecting terrorism so they can continue to benefit from the state of war.

A thousand pardons!

Actually I noticed my mistake just after I hit the submit button...but I didn't think anyone would notice!

Also, I think I like the other biscuits better than Tim Tams. I intend to read up on the ingredients. Is is arrowroot or some kind of almond flavoring? I really like the taste.

(I didn't actually gag when I ate two bites of the hot, buttered toast with Vegemite...)

Arnott's make a yummy arrowroot biscuit, very plain, not very sweet. Yummy, as a matter of fact, with a bit of butter and Vegemite, but also on their own, or dipped in tea.

Do you mean the white "Shortbread Cream" biscuit? I'm not sure what the ingredients are, but it is possible that it has arrowroot in it. The chocolate cream one has a hint of a spice in it, which I have never quite worked out. Sometimes it seems like cinnamon or allspice. Nope, just looked up the ingredients - it's ginger.

I have to admit that Tim Tams are not my favourite - I prefer the Mint Slices, but because there have been Mudcat threads about Tim Tams I thought it might be more relevant.

Oh ye of little faith! I posted your parcel towards the end of November (OK - so I was a bit late. I was waiting for a last little piece ...)

But having said that, who knows if you'll get it or not???!!! I see that the U.S. Post has put an embargo on all parcels with any kind of edibles in them ... and I ignored Liz's warning and put in some sweets. Worse - I even put in a (itsy witsy bitsy) jar of marmite. Lord - what'll the sniffers make of that?????

So - the spirit is/was there, steps have been taken, but it's all in the hands of the U.S. Customs now.

My advice, Mary, is to wait until you need a Vitamin B boost, try it again then, and see whether you like it. It's used on an "as needed" basis here. Sometimes I can just ignore it, sometimes I need it and can't get enough, and then I go off it again for a while.

Well, jimmyt!! What a nice collection of presents! I couldn't post sooner about the actual gifts but that doesn't mean I'm not thrilled! The best was the CD of your group, and what a handsome bunch you are, too, as well as very entertaining.

I've tried the tea and the hot chocolate mix (in one of the "Ugly Coffee Cups") and they are wonderful. Haven't tried the coffee yet, but it sure smells good.

I know it seems a bit odd that I'd want one of your local newspapers, but I got a real kick out of it. I was born into a small-town newspaper and print shop and spent the next 40 years doing various aspects of journalism, so I really do enjoy seeing different papers. A bonus was the sports cartoon featuring an Arkansas Razorback hog and the Missouri mascot facing off. Great choice of issue as I am a native Arkansan and a loyal Razorback fan. Thanks a lot.

I have a couple of other comments that I'll send in a PM.

Thanks again for making my Christmas special.

Thank you so very much! The musical wearable matches my hair colour pretty well and will be a very fine substitute (and worn with pride) for the two equivalent wearables stolen by my 16-year old daughter!

The listenable is truly excellent and you could have hardly chosen me a better collection! I love the recordings and really feel the love and care that has gone into them!

From the postmark and presents I now have a pretty good idea who my SS is and will be most interested to see if I am right.

Thanks so much!!

Well, I thought I was going to get a pony, but apparantly the little fella was turned back at the border because of the whole BSE deal. My santa did manage to sneak some Buffalo jerky across, though. Oddly enough, it wasn't made in Buffalo at all, but in Lindsborg, Kansas. And it doesn't taste like Buffalo wings, neither.

Also, a nifty Kansas guidebook, which I recommend for anyone who is planning to attend that state. Or even if you aren't planning to. "Kansas Curiosities- Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat Stuff" by Pam Grout.

A random sample - " Every fall, Elk Falls hosts a tour of its outhouses, many of which are decorated."

This book is a book with a message, and the message is "ROAD TRIP!" Who wants to go?

Many thanks santa nancyjo!

Yep - those Elves are DEFINITELY on the Old Calendar! Christmas Day and I come home to find my pressie from my Psecret Psanta Pseudolus! O joy! O rapture! Three different glasses "depending on what your beverage of choice is at the time!" according to my Wale of a Psanta! And a book about Delaware (which opens with a quote from that famous Welshman, Thomas Jefferson!) and a CD which he's made me from a live performance of his at Knappucinno's which I'm listening to now. (Who's the weird laughing person in the audience?)

I'm trying to decide which glass to tip to my Psanta tonight.

Anyway, love it love it love it! Thank you Psanta. Hope you and the family had a superior Christmas and will enjoy a superior 2004!

PS: That Pumpkin Hurling near Millsboro looks like a particularly Mudcatish pastime. You'd better organize a 'meet' during the next one ...

in case you want to put a face to the songs. In fact, somewhere on that site you can find pictures of Chris and Jill, the laughers!!!

I hope you enjoy the CD!!!!

My pressie arrived. And what a special pressie it is. In 1974, with the money from a small inheritance, I took off to Australia much to my family's distress.
My pressie is full of memories of that trip. I actually stayed at the King's Cross Hotel, walked Victoria Street, road the Manly ferry and best of all flew over Sydney Harbour in a single engine Cessna - I picked up the pilot on a flight to Brisbane.
Sandra - I am thrilled. The wrapping paper aerial view will be framed. Thanks you for the wonderful tour and for the witch too. And the calendar.

glad you liked it - but you didn't comment on the blokes! Didn't you like them? Weren't there enough to chose from?

The Kings Cross Hotel is one of my favourite buildings - I've been keeping an eye on it for years since they closed the upper floors & let it run down. As a cynic with almost 28 years experience living in the Cross I was waiting for a modern building to fill the site. But it hasn't happened, yet. The ground floor is a bar catering to backpackers - they show English TV shows (including Oz classics like Neighbours that pommy backpackers miss so severely), sell jugs of beer & have Miss Backpacker competitions!

Leunig is a wonderful cartoonist - he invented the innocent bystander (all his characters are innocent) & I love his work. My favourite cartoon shows a father & son watching a beautiful sunset on TV, behind their backs the same sunset is outside their window.

Actually, Sandra, one of my adventures in Sydney involved a New Zealander with his front teeth missing. The lobby of the King's Cross was an elegant affair in 1974 with plush couches and bar service. He accosted me in the lobby and followed me everywhere. The center guy with the hat bears an uncanny resemblance. Quite attractive!

Sins, the front bar of the Kings Cross Hotel could no longer be called elegant. I wouldn't be game to go there to take some current pics for you - when I visit a pub these days it's for a singing session. Pubs full of noisy drinkers & drunks are not my thing, & I was never really keen on 'em.

Charlie & Judy met John Dengate who drew the card on their first trip here when he was performing at a folk club they visited. This trip he was going to be away performing when they were in Sydney, however they ran into him when he was busking. If you look at the pics they posted in Dec 2001 you can see a picture of him, if you feel so inclned.

Subject: Kendal Mint Cake recipe
From: Helen

I found a recipe in some pages I took from an Oz magazine back in 1980 for Kendal Mint Cake. I haven't made it myself, but it looks easy. This recipe is very similar except that instead of using a candy thermometer it gives the old fashioned instructions to "2. Bring to the boiling point until a little will form a soft ball when dropped into cold water".

HELEN'S* BRITISH COOKING SITE

[* no connection to me]

Kendal Mint Cake Kendal Mint Cake
http://www.hwatson.force9.co.uk/cookbook/recipes/confect/kendalmintcake.htm

According to legend, a Kendal confectioner, intending to make glacier mints, took his eye off the cooking pan for a minute and then, resuming his task, noticed that the mixture had started to 'grain' and become cloudy, instead of clear. When poured out, the result was Mint Cake.

Makes 16 squares

Granulated sugar - 450g (1 lb)
Milk - 150 ml (5 fl oz)
Peppermint essence - 1 tsp

METHOD

   1. Butter an 18 cm (7 inch) square shallow baking tin. Place the sugar and milk in a saucepan. Bring very, very slowly to the boil over a very low heat, shaking and swirling the pan occasionally until the sugar is dissolved.
   2. Place a thermometer in the pan and boil rapidly until the mixture reaches 140 ºC / 275 ºF. Remove from the heat and add the essence, beating well until smooth and cooled slightly.
   3. Pour into the prepared tin and as it cools, mark out squares with a knife. Once cold cut into 16 squares.

Maybe I should start a new thread for this, but the main discussion about it seems to have been in the Secret Santa threads.

Well I am still no nearer finding out the identity of my Secret Santa. I need more clues. You claim "kenneth's son" will lead to your identity. Well I've painstakingly written out the Mudcat names of all identifiable Secret Santa's, and compared them with any famous kenneths I can think of(More, Horne,Tynan, Branagh, Macalpin and various other kings of Scotland). Nothing rings a bell. I tend to think you are Scottish, from the origin of the presents.(But this may be a red herring, I've alraeday had you claiming to be Irish and then revealing you arent).
I've perused various recent Scottish threads to see if I can spot your style. To no avail.

As far as I know, gaelic for "son" is Mac. There are no "Mac" among the list of Santas published by the helpful Catsphiddle. Not many Scottish looking names either: there is an Alba, but that isnt you. Whiaky on is obviously a clever clue, but it's too clever for me.

Whiskymac? But there isnt a Santa called that, or Mac on its own. The present contained Glenfiddich (a very small bottle, but there's Scotsmen for you).. That comes from Dufftown. Macduff?? It's all very confusing.

thanks GUEST for entering into the spirit(sic) of things. This secretive santa claims to be (or sound like) a gaelic son of Kenneth, as well as a whisky's son. Waterson sounds a bit too English, and also none of the relevant Mudcatters are called Waterson.(Unless he's referring to his real name, which would be a bit of a cheat as how could I know that?).

My wonderful parcel arrived in the midst of me moving house and moving to another part of the country. I picked it up from the sorting office, opening little bits of it while I was being driven into town to buy new bedding.

Lots of individually wrapped pressies with messages on, home made blackberry jelly which we've just finished, a little tin of salmon paté, and all sorts of Christmas goodies. The photos and fridge magnet went straight up on my fridge so I am constantly reminded of the thoughtful presents and my lovely Santa!
