After I finished the song, I noticed the little girl lean over and whisper something in her Mother's ear. The Mother than whispered something in her daughter's ear in response, and then they both smiled at me. I asked the Mother if her daughter asked what a davenport is, and the Mother said, "No, she asked what cavorting is." I laughed and asked her, "And what did you tell her?" She said, "I told her that cavorting was having fun." Everyone got a good laugh out of that, and I think that little girl was especially pleased that she had asked such a funny question... Jerry |

It's what you or I would call a settee or sofa (and just perfect for cavorting on). Davenports in the UK are little sloping writing desks (rather a challenge to cavorters, perhaps). I presume both American and English Davenports are named originally after the furniture makers, or the place they were made ??? My (Welsh) grandma used to call her sofa a "Chesterfield" - the only time I've ever heard that used. It's a lovely collection of songs, Jerry. By the way, the bit of American vocabulary that amused and intrigued *my* daughter when we first got the tape was the "knickers and high cut boots" mentioned in the song "Old Blue Suit" ! - jeanie |

It's an old term, not used by anyone over here, since my Dad died. He called cast iron (and all other) frying pans "Spiders." I never knew where he got the term until I studied Colonial life in American and discovered that the cast iron frying pans with legs that they placed over the coals in a fireplace were called "Spiders" because they were black and stood up on legs. Maybe his parents, who grew up in Denmark, still used the term over there and brought it with them. Cavorting on a small sloping desk is even kinkier than cavorting on the kitchen table. Jerry |

I've heard the term "davenport" used on not too rare occasions in our family. My grandmothers, my own parents, and some other relatives have used it at odd times. When I've used it, most of the people seemed to know what I was speaking of. I guess context is a clue. "Come over here and sit on this davenport with me." |

Words like davenport are slowly slipping from usage and I suppose that is OK. Jerry, a collection of songs on CD by you was mentioned. How can I get one? Here is another word that needs mentioning. Mess!! In the South a "Mess of something is enough for a meal for the whole family.It is neither a gallon, quart, peck,bushel or pound. Its a mess. When they get the time, they eventually plan to release my second album with them on CD.
