I guess a lot of you have heard Jerry's Davenport Blues, but my first time was just now. Jerry, this is so good and in the blues style I love so well. I would like the lyrics and may have to copy them from the recording. Good Show. Jim

Thanks, Jeep..

Let's see if I can remember the words:

"There's a moon out Tonight, so won't you come on over?
Your Momma don't have to know
I got a couple of beers in the refrigerator, got the Opry on the radio
We can sit on the steps and watch the stars come out. Only be you and me
Or we can go cavort on the davenport, and no one will ever see

I'll be sitting here waiting in my rocking chair, while you're walking on down the road
I put out the cat, I got the dog tied up, I got the lights turned way down low
I got a part in my hair, I got my shoes shined up, I even wore a brand new shirt
So honey don't be late, 'cause I can hardly wait, you know I rushed right home from work

When the evening is over, then I'll take you home, or at least 'nto the corner store
Everyone will be sleeping, even Murphy's dog will be curled up on the kitchen floor
And old Mrs. Johnson 'll have her blinds all drawn, so we can wave as we walk on by
And then it's long last kiss, 'cause it will have to last, till I see you next Friday night

The song is just called Davenport, but I guess the guitar picking is kinda bluesy. Glad you like it..

Jerry

My kind of stuff Jerry. Thanks much for the words. By the way, wonder how many people remember what a davenport is? Jim

I sang this song at a library, many years ago, and a young couple were sitting in the front row with their 7 or 8 year old daughter. After I finished the song, I noticed the little girl lean over and whisper something in her Mother's ear. The Mother than whispered something in her daughter's ear in response, and then they both smiled at me. I asked the Mother if her daughter asked what a davenport is, and the Mother said, "No, she asked what cavorting is."
I laughed and asked her, "And what did you tell her?" She said, "I told her that cavorting was having fun." Everyone got a good laugh out of that, and I think that little girl was especially pleased that she had asked such a funny question...

Excuse a young fellow for asking, but what is a Davenport? The meaning of the song is clear enough anyway, but it would be nice to know. (I like this song a lot too).

Alan - I had to ask Jerry this self-same question after he sent me over a tape of these lovely songs. It's what you or I would call a settee or sofa (and just perfect for cavorting on).

Davenports in the UK are little sloping writing desks (rather a challenge to cavorters, perhaps). I presume both American and English Davenports are named originally after the furniture makers, or the place they were made ??? My (Welsh) grandma used to call her sofa a "Chesterfield" - the only time I've ever heard that used.

It's a lovely collection of songs, Jerry.

By the way, the bit of American vocabulary that amused and intrigued *my* daughter when we first got the tape was the "knickers and high cut boots" mentioned in the song "Old Blue Suit" !

Correction - knickers and high cut boots are all the way to "Montana" (no blue suit) ;)
(just been humming it to myself and realized)

A davenport is a sofa is a couch (for our English friends.) It's an old term, not used by anyone over here, since my Dad died. He called cast iron (and all other) frying pans "Spiders." I never knew where he got the term until I studied Colonial life in American and discovered that the cast iron frying pans with legs that they placed over the coals in a fireplace were called "Spiders" because they were black and stood up on legs. Maybe his parents, who grew up in Denmark, still used the term over there and brought it with them.

Cavorting on a small sloping desk is even kinkier than cavorting on the kitchen table.

Thanks Jeanie and Jerry. For an innocent young chap like me, just starting out in life, this is the place to come and learn all the important things!

HI, Jerry and Ruth! I've heard the term "davenport" used on not too rare occasions in our family. My grandmothers, my own parents, and some other relatives have used it at odd times. When I've used it, most of the people seemed to know what I was speaking of. I guess context is a clue. "Come over here and sit on this davenport with me."

Hello, Jerry, howjado?

Davenport and Chesterfield are words that used to occur in novels and movie scripts into the '50s in my memory.

I guess I need to get back in. Words like davenport are slowly slipping from usage and I suppose that is OK.
Jerry, a collection of songs on CD by you was mentioned. How can I get one?

Here is another word that needs mentioning. Mess!! In the South a "Mess of something is enough for a meal for the whole family. It is neither a gallon, quart, peck, bushel or pound. Its a mess.
A lady can tell you how much is a mess of beans, but not how to measure it. Jim

Folk Legacy has released my first album, Get Down Home on CD, Jim. When they get the time, they eventually plan to release my second album with them on CD. I've been trying to release Handful Of Songs on CD, but the master was lost, so it's turning out to be more complicated than I ever imagined.

Maybe someday..
