Does anyone have the words or know who wrote it (I think it was a girl) - I can remember quite a lot of bits. We have a new landlord at our village pub, And of him we are not very fond. One of these days, if he don't change his ways, He'll end up in the old village pond........ ........It's an eighteenth century coaching inn, So the signs say on all the approaches. 'Til the last sign of all, fixed on to the wall, That one reads "Sorry no Coaches". ........There's a door marked FILLIES, Which makes us look sillies, Complete with ye period bolts, Which often do stick, If you don't know the trick, And you have to climb out through the COLTS.

I wonder, though, if Leadfingers was thinking of "Public Bar" instead of the requested song. It was me that sang this song when I was with Crayfolk in the early Seventies. It's called "18th Century Coaching Inn" and if anyone's still interested I'll type out the lyrics - I can still remember them. I also remember Dave Bryant! Barry Laing (also of Crayfolk) uswed to refer to him as the Tito Gobi of the Ballspond Road! I'll watch this thread for a while - if there's anty response I'll post them for you. |

Am afraid I've added some words in the last three verses to fit it in to my banjoing etc at our local folk club then. Anyway here goes. We've got a new landlord in our village pub and of him we are not very fond, and one of these days if he don't mend his ways he'll end up one dark night in the pond!. He's put up old beams where no beams ever woz, and he's cluttered the place up with brass. With bits of old stables and cart wheels for tables sez he's trying to give it some class!. Thers styrups and saddles all over the place and spurs where y'hang up y'coats. You sit down to dine with a nose bag of wine through a door marked fodder and oats!. He brews huntsmans punch and serves Dick Turpins lunch, which consists of a pint and a sandwhich, and the reason he said that he band Bob and Ted was because he don't hold with bad language. There's a door that's marked fillys that makes girls look silly's because of the period bolts, which frequently stick and if you don't know the trick you have to climb out through the colts. Now, when we hold our Saturday folk club up stairs I usually oblige with a song. And when ever invited I am quite delighted to take my old banjo along. Well, he took just one look as I walked in the door, and shouted "no 'ippies in 'ere!", Which offended me slightly so very politely I gave him a thump round thee ear!. This cost me ten quid in the magistrates court and some nasty remarks from the beak. But here's news for my fans, although I've been banned, I'll be at The Golden next week !!. |

Among my usual fare of ballads, it made a change. I came across an old cassette tape I'd recorded for my mum and there were yet more verses to finish off the song. Starting from the last verse of 'GUEST' which is slightly different: It cost me ten quid in the magistrate's court and some nasty remarks from the beak. But the landlord's black eye makes I laugh till I cry, But there won't be no folk club next week. Well he don't want our custom and he don't want our trade There's no profit in serving the locals. It's them in big cars that 'e wants in 'is bars. 'E refers to us as 'they damn locals.' Well we sits in 'is bars on a Saturday night Cuz there's nowhere to drink if we don't. But if 'e thinks we're going to see him through the winter, You've got it, we bloody well won't! |
