CD reviews vacancy

Subject: CD reviews vacancy
From: musicmick

I find that while I am well supplied for my December and January columns, I can use some new submissions for late winter and early spring. The reviews are available on line to members of the Philadelphia Folksong Society and patrons of the Philadelphia Folk Festival. They are, then, reposted on Mudcat. Artists who would like their work reviewed, for expository and publicity purposes, can send product to the PFS office mentioning my name or TUNE UP. If you are looking to be reviewed, here are a few hints.
I never write an unfavorable review. If a CD is inappropriate for inclusion, I pass it along to one of the chairmen of events that may have interest in hiring the performer. (Here's a hint; we do a lot of children's programing)
I am a fan of traditional music. I have reported on new material but, I'm a sucker for trad. (A word to the wise)

I'll send you a copy of my new children's CD, "Up and Over the Moon!". It has a mix of new and traditional songs. Thanks, Mike.

Like the cat who ate the cheese, I wait with baited breath. Don't forget to include information on how to purchase the CD. Web sites are good or phone numbers or sites like amazon.com too.

Here's the order information, which wasn't included in the package:

Ok, I'm good for Jan. and Feb. I can still fit in a few more for early spring. I am hoping against hope that there some trad recordings out there. Or am I only dreaming?

If you haven't received your copy of "Sharp Practice" yet there's at least one trad folk CD winging its way to you at the moment.

(or is that one of the ones for Jan/Feb already?)

I have received, thus far, one CD of children's songs from Canada. If that is an inaccurate description of your work, I haven't gotten it yet.

Mike - I have a recent CD I'll send you. I recorded it with Paul Mills in Toronto in July 2002. Rick and Mick participated in the project, as did some others.

Thanks Jed, I'll be glad to give it a listen.
Incidently, I can be reached through the PFS office pfs@pfs.org or at home. TUNE UP is issued monthly except in the summer, when the PFS is busy putting on the Philadelphia Folk Festival an extraveganza that is, now, in its 43rd year. My column is reposted on Mudcat so you can check out my style.

Jed, the eagle has landed. I'll listen to your CD this week. Thanks for submitting it.
I got the "Sharp Practice" recording, too. It looks and sounds great. Expect a review within the next few months (It will be favorable)
I am double checking Debbie's CD by having it rated by her target audience, little kids and their parents. If they agree with me, I'll review it this winter. I liked it but what do I know?

Just for those who are reading this thread and haven't heard of my music before - my CD has already been in many a family's hands, and as a result has received a Parents' Choice award and a Children's Music Web award. Just for the wee record.

Mike,

Unless I haven't caught the reviews you should still have three recordings from me. They are: 1)A Common Treasury; 2)Song of the Wage Slave; and 3)With the Friends I Love Best. Band name is "Out of the Rain" - you seemed to indicate to me that you liked them.

Richard, I revieweed at least one of your CDs last year. Aren't you the band that is no longer together or did I just dream that?
Fear not, Debbie, I have no doubt that the little ones who keep me honest, will love your music. Then, I will quote their tiny hoorays and oles in the review.
Since I started this thread, I have recieved quite a few swell CDs but I will cite all thise I promised and a few more, too. In addition, I often forward CDs to various chairpersons who do booking for the PFS and the Festival so, even if your CD doesn't get reviewed, it may be planted in fertile and fortuitous soil.

Hey Mike,

Yes, you did review my solo CD. And yes, the other recordings are of my former band. My post was not intended to gripe at you but simply a reminder.

Hope you are doing well.

Hi Mike-

Do you review hard-core traditional material? If so, let me know and I can send you some beauts.

I am partial to traditional music. What the hell is hard core?

Hard Core Trad is performed by singers who are not only not professionals, but wouldn't dream of big stages and hit CDs. Belle Stewart, Jock Duncan, Vera Ward Hall, Texas Gladden, Jimmy McBeath...the kind of stuff you don'tr hear played by folk DJs.

Dick,

I don't know which folk DJs you listen to, but there are ones I hear, on the radio at home and streamed on the web from afar, who play those traditional singers and others like them.

These are some of the best.

Don't forget Matt Watroba and the "Folks Like Us" show on WDET (101.9) from Detroit, MI. It airs on Saturday from noon to 3:00 PM EST. You can get him on the web by clicking HERE and finding the link.

Matt called in to Rick's virtual CD release, and hosted Rick in his home when Rick came to the Ark to open for Matt and his friends. That was another magical night for me.

All the best,

Mick

Well quite frankly, I'm a little disappointed that "hard core" doesn't mean what I thought it did. Dick, you can send CDs to the PFS office or through Diana. Or, you could hand them to me next time you are in town. I wanted to invite you to my CD release party on April 3rd at the Mermaid. Gene Shay will be the emcee so the jokes will suck but try to show up anyway.
