06 Dec 03 - 10:30 AM (#1066681) Subject: Movie Soundtracts From: Jerry Rasmussen For all the movies we've seen in a lifetime, I wonder how much of the music can stand alone. These days, it seems like movies are often the REASON to release a collection of rap and hip hop records. Throw in a few car explosions, a lot of F words and plenty of bootie shaking, and the movie soundtrack will be a million seller. A lot of times, the singles fro mthe soundtrack are hits before the movie is even released. Now, in the not necessarily "good old days," movie soundtracks were written for the movie. Sometimes a particular song defined a movie, like Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling from High Noon. There are a few movie soundtracks that really stand alone, for me. Last night, I was listening to the music from Big Country and I was transported by it. I was living in New York City when Big Country came out, and I must have gone to see it four or five times. The Music was a major part of my enjoyment, and the soundtrack still sounds great to me. Some other favorites of mine are the music from Pete Kelly's Blues, Man With A Golden Arm, Paper Moon, To Kill A Mockingbird and Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou. Got any favorites? I'm not including soundtracks to musicals, because they SHOULD stand alone... but feel free to mention any favorites there... Jerry |

There are so many other movies that have brilliant music - but talking about recent movies... I love the music from Lord of the Rings. And Chicago. And I love the music in all those animated movies :-) - Anastasia, Shrek, almost all the Disney movies!! Hmm... Love Story... Braveheart... Breakfast at Tiffany's (Moon River :-)... Dr. Zhivago (Lara's theme). There are ever so many others... but my head feels too blocked to think of them - darn cold. As for musicals - definitely Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Singin' in the Rain, Evita, West side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Moulin Rouge... okay, there are too many. |

Some of my favorite soundtracks and scores (soundtracks are often collections of popular or classical music, as opposed to scores, which are composed for the film itself and are usually all instrumental) include: The Wicker Man (although much of this was composed specifically for the film) Stealing Beauty A Walk on the Moon The Virgin Suicides Jane Eyre (score)(the one w/ George C. Scott and Susannah York) Excalibur Hair (similar to the stage musical but not too) Robin of Sherwood (Showtime TV series) "Legend" by Clannad Brazil (which is named, inexplicably, for the title song) |

Other than that, I prefer the old Hollywood standard of soundtrack music specifically written for the film in question (like folks like John Williams still do), rather than just an inane collection of sparsely related hits off an old K-Tel collection. |

The soundtrack was done by Gerry Mulligan and one cut, Black Nightgown, actually got a lot of airplay as a single. I also have an old e.p. for those old enough to know what an e.p. is of The Wild Ones, with Marlon Brando... just watched the movie a couple of weeks ago, and even though it seems very mannered and cardboard, I still enjoyed the music. And of course, most of the John Williams soundtracks from movies are memorable. I'll have to pay more attention to the music on Blade Runner, Clinton... it's one of my favorite movies.. Jerry |

Some other good ones there, including the theme from "The Bounty". P.S. I am hot and cold on Clannad. I like most of their old stuff and some of the newer stuff (like the Harry's Game theme and the Macalla album) but definitely not ALL. That "Robin, the Hooded Man" theme I thought was just dopey. This midi is not great on my sound card, but if you can hear the upper notes, you can get a sense of the chord changes. I heard this music several times from another room and absolutely fell in love with it. Then I realized it has my favorite chord progression, Dm to C major. I watched the movie on TV several times just to hear the background music. This is an extremely violent movie, Not For Mom, NFM, as my kids say. Jerry, another old movie with great background music is How the West Was Won. I love Come Share My Life which was used as background music only, I think, no words. It's the tune of Who Will Shoe My Foot. |

I used to have the soundtrack LP from "Zorba the Greek" (1965), and I loved it. The tunes were composed by Mikis Theodorakis. I don't know who performed them. Anybody know what the featured instrument was? It sounded sort of like a hammered dulcimer, but I suppose the Greeks might have a different name for it. Then again, it could have been a zither. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) had both Richard Strauss' "ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA" and Johann Strauss' "THE BLUE DANUBE." "The Pawnbroker" (1964) had a soundtrack that was mostly jazz. I didn't own that album but I think I borrowed it from a friend. Jumping ahead a few years: "Koyaanisqatsi" (1983) had a soundtrack composed by Philip Glass. |

And who will EVER forget that opening of 2001 with Also Sprach Zarathustra? I must admit that I can't sit through the movie any more... it moves as slow as the slow motion sequence of the bone turning into a space station. The Pawnbroker, like so many movies of that time, had a wonderful jazz score, although I never owned the CD. It was much in the same feel as the soundtracks I mentioned for The Wild One, Man With The Golden Arm and I Want To Live. Good stuff... Jerry |

One example for me is "Bang Bang" (My Baby Shot Me Down) from Kill Bill. I remember the song by Ms. Sinatra in the last 60s but had forgotten it and now have a much greater appreciation for it because it is the backbone of the movie's premise. I gave him a sample of a song I wrote called "Against the Tide" done by our band ShoreGrass. The producers said they would use it only until they found something better, but it is several months later and my song is still out there. Those who have mentioned The Last of the Mohicans are right in saying that the sound track was exceptional. I will never forget the pursuit scene when Bumpo and the Mohicans were pursuing the Algonquins (?) and their captives. As the music rises in crescendo, the pursuit winds higher up the heights of the mountain, ending in the death of the Chief's son, and the suicide of the girl he loves. It really doesn't work any better than the music in that segment does. At the time I saw Dances with Wolves, I thought the soundtrack was wonderful, but it hasn't held up as well as some others. About 10 years ago there was a film called In God's Hands about big wave surfers and their demons, and the soundtrack, while none of the music was familiar to me and most of it youth-directed alternative rock, was just perfect. And of course, there was the soundtrack that most people my age have at one time owned....Easy Rider, and it was one of the best. It featured the Byrds, Hendrix, Steppenwolf, and the Holy Modal Rounders. Say no more. |

He also did Lion in Winter, and one of my all time fave soundtracks, Midnight Cowboy. Another one I can still hear in my head today is the film score from Exodus. IIRC, the "Theme from Exodus" was even a radio hit? Can't recall who the composer was, though. Not all that great music, but it has stuck with me all these years, and the thought of brings memories of a fiercely blue eyed Paul Newman, whom I adored, but must admit didn't seem to fit the role very well in that film. |

Every person there under the age of 35 was familiar with the tune because it was used in one scene of the more-or-less cult movie "Napoleon Dynamite". Oddly (or maybe not so oddly), though they recognized it nobody knew its name until I told them. Some of them thought the tune was written for the movie and were surprised when I told them it has been around for about twenty years and is part of the repertoire of most "progressive" Celtic bands. |

While there are a couple of tracks from 1920's recordings, the bulk of the music was done by a small group brilliantly re-creating the sound of jazz from that era, focusing on the main character of the movie, who is a jazz guitarist. Howard Alden plays guitar, and is a delight. He cut his teeth doing duete with George Van Epps.. son of Fred Van Epps the classic plectrum banjo player. George plays a 7 string guitar (getting off topic here, because he's not on this CD) and does a lot of finger-picking. I mentione Van Epps, because Alden's style owes a great deal to him. The Ferrante and Teicher version is the one that I remember. I think it was on the charts for quite a while. However, it was actually composed for the movie by Ernest Gold, who won an Oscar for the score. In 1961, Pat Boone wrote words for it, and it was called "This Land is Mine." I love movie themes - I find them very evocative. I have to agree about "Last of the Mohicans" and "Secret of Roan Inish" (for which I have the soundtrack). Almost anything from Maurice Jarre has really grabbed me - "Ryan's Daughter", "Dr Zhivago", "Lawrence of Arabia", and "Dead Poets Society" to name a few. I became aware of the music of Michael Nyman when I saw "The Piano". I found that music really haunting, and went straight out and bought the soundtrack, followed by another CD of his music. Then I realised that I had already heard some of his stuff in other movies that I liked, such as "The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover" and "A Zed and Two Noughts". His style is very individual, maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I like it. I'm sure I'll think of many others, but that will do for now. |

The soundtrack for Transamerica is terrific (better than the movie), though they do that really irritating thing of having some of the talking of the movie interspersed with the music. DON'T DO THIS! It took me three months to get the sheet music for "Farethewell" from the film "Fly Away Home", and it was released on a compilation album of Mary Chapin Carpenter's -- Party Girl -- but still worth it. It is a puzzle to me why anyone would buy the soundtrack for the Johnny Cash movie -- hello? The originals are easy to buy, and sound better. yours, Peter T. |

The title theme uses a quote from the song, 'Caller Herring' whilst the point where the ship finally sets forth into the Atlantic is a set of variations on a theme from 'The Leaving of Liverpool'. Mr. Horner clearly knows his folksong and uses the material with some considerable skill. |

And a great score adds as much is a lead character. to mention a few "classics", imagine "Patton" without the score or "Tom Jones" several fairly recent films that have great music would be "The Englishman who went up a Hill but came down a Mountain", "October Sky" and the great tunes in "Titanic" were the only things that helped my get through that movie. I usually enjoy Cameron's works -but the story line was so contrived and ( for me at least, because the rest of the known universe seemed to love it) really was insulting to the real life tragedy that took place. I'll take " A Night to Remember" any day of the week. Oh yeah, I was quite impressed by Billy Boyd's singing in "Return of the King". Shame he didn't get to do a song or two In "Master and Commander". |

("Everybody's Talkin' At Me" with Nilsson singing Fred Neil's tune). Also, the same for Born Free although the rest of that picture wasn't as good as the opening in my opinion. Jack Elliott was scheduled to do the score for "The Ballad of J. W. Coop" directed by Cliff Robertson (Charly). Jack missed a great opportunity due to a scheduling problem with a club in Michigan. As a result, Cliff elected to have Don Randi do it and as a result, the film wasn't as good as it could have been with Jack's contribution. Jerry Goldsmith did a great score for The Homecoming which was the precurser of The Waltons on T.V. I played on it and on the first couple of Walton installments. Jerry G. used autoharp,five-string banjo, harmonica and dulcimer. He is one of the few film composers who knows how to write for those instruments. I also submit Silent Running, score by Peter Schikele of PDQ Bach. I played on that as well. Frank |
