Tiraspol factory manufactures small arms for sale abroad.

THE WASHINGTON POST - IRASPOL, Moldova, Dec. 7 —

In the ethnic conflicts that surrounded the collapse of the Soviet Union, fighters in several countries seized upon an unlikely new weapon: a small, thin rocket known as the Alazan. Originally built for weather experiments, the Alazan was transformed into a terror weapon, packed with explosives and lobbed into cities. Military records show that at least 38 Alazan warheads were modified to carry radioactive material, effectively creating the world's first surface-to-surface dirty bomb. The warheads are not known to have been used. But now, according to experts and officials, they have disappeared.

Bet they're for sale to the highest bidder.

"To split the simple atom
All mankind was intent.
Now any day, the atom may
Return the compliment."

You simple CANNOT make things you can't endure if idiots get ahold of them.

True, Bill D. That's the same problem kids face with snowballs. Other than decorate the snowman, there just isn't a whole bunch of other stuff a kid can do with them. Good poem.

Wonder if this is the stuff being set up by yon Iraqi "officer" being set up to be "discovered " in Iraq??

Of course one of the things about this type of dirty bomb, is that because it is well below critical mass and contains reasonably low-grade radiactive material, it doesn't actually split the atom anyway. A small conventional explosive charge is just used to distribute radioactive debris over a wide area.

Isn't radioactivity just a 'slow', natural splitting of atoms? (as opposed to *BOOMS* where we convince a bunch of them to do it all at once?)

I got a 'C' in physics...
