09 Dec 03 - 05:29 AM (#1068301) Subject: RE: The Darkness From: Geoff the Duck Last night he was interviewed on ITV (UK telly) by Frank Skinner. When I first found that his name was Justin Hawkins, it brought back memories of Nigel St. Hubbins and Spinal Tap - the original spoof rock band. Actually, after listening to him talk, I was quite impressed. When I first saw their video, I thought that it was somebody taking the mickey, but they do actually seem to be genuine about their music - although he certainly doesn't take things seriously. Apparently they have been around for a while, but nobody would release a record, so they financed it all by themselves. Justin wrote and sang dodgy jingles for adverts on British Television to make cash to invest in the group's record. Quack! GtD. |
09 Dec 03 - 07:32 AM (#1068343) Subject: RE: The Darkness From: Grab I'm sorry, a song that goes "my heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel" is as bad as anything the boy-bands have come out with. And the singer's voice - ick! Sorry, but if you're going to go for that type of music, you either need a singer who can rise above the material, or some classic songs that anyone could sing, or a stellar guitarist. As far as I see, they're scoring zero out of three - the singer is lousy, the songs are banal rubbish, and the guitarist sounds like he's playing exercises off some "Rock methods" book. Fair play to them, they're making money off it. They've mastered the most important element of the music business, which is self-promotion. Graham. |

10 Dec 03 - 04:58 AM (#1069116) Subject: RE: The Darkness From: Geoff the Duck The Mick = micturation = urine = piss. Origin of phrase :- Bladder very full of urine (often as you awake from sleeep) - side effect - penis swells and stands proud. Go for a wee and it shrinks back to inactive size. Absolutely NOTHING sexual about the process. This became referred to (I think in army barracks) as being "piss proud". HENCE - a pompous person with no substance to back up their pride became referred to as being "full of piss". Taking that person down a notch - deflating their ego - became known as "taking the piss out of them" (also taking the mickey - short for micturation - polite word for piss). These days the usage tends to be more making fun of somebody - the clothes they wear, or something specific they do etc. Quack! GtD. |
