12 Dec 03 - 03:51 PM (#1071117) Subject: BS: Hit and Run From: JedMarum Somebody needs to write me a song!! I don't believe it myself, but I was hit again by a drunk driver last night. This is 4 times in 5 years! This SOB was screaming up the road in the left lane, I was cruising in the right - he side swipped me at abouy 65 MPH, tore off my front bumper and other bits - then he floored it and swerved and swayed up the road into a cloud of dust. Gone forever - the son of a b*tch! He hit the car behind me too. Cops came and tried to make sense of the whole thing, and will do their best, I'm sure - but we could provide few helpful deatils ... no tag numbers, a vague description of the car and driver .... with my $500 deductable, well we were already planning a very low profile Christmas. Good thing we have a turkey already in the freezer! So - 4 times in 5 years!!! How luky is that??? I go 30 some years of driving; never caused an accident. Been in 4 accidents, each time hit from behind by a drunk??? Wow - what do I have a target or something??? I just gotta laugh! |

12 Dec 03 - 03:58 PM (#1071123) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Bill D maybe you should take up drinking, so you could be a weaving target! *grin*...(I think the lucky part is to be hit 4 times with no serious injuries!) |

12 Dec 03 - 04:20 PM (#1071133) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: JedMarum You're correct Bill - I am very lucky that I haven't been hurt (recently - the first one did a bit of damage, knocked on the head, concussion, memopry probs for weeks). And yes, it's ironic that I dont even drink I am getting drunk drivers hitting me (maybe they're after revenge??) It hasn't affected my insurance rates yet - don;t know why??? I am concerned though - but all of these have been clearly the bad guy's fault - |

12 Dec 03 - 04:24 PM (#1071140) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: CarolC Sorry to hear about that, Jed. I'm glad you weren't hurt (at least I hope you weren't hurt). We (JtS, my son, and me) just had a head on collision with a very large buck deer while going about 50 mph about five hours ago. That's my third head-on impact with a deer while driving or riding in a car. Funny how some experiences seem to repeat themselves. P.S. no one was hurt in our car, just some bits of glass lodged in uncomfortable places, but the deer (and probably our car) was a total loss. A guy with a pickup truck took the deer home with him. So I guess it was a fortunate thing for someone anyway. |

12 Dec 03 - 05:59 PM (#1071210) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Sorcha You were very lucky, Carol, Jack, et al. Couple years ago here, man hit a deer, deer went thru the windshield and decapitated his wife. No kidding. |

12 Dec 03 - 06:07 PM (#1071213) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: JedMarum LOL Amos - I think if I hit a deer, maybe at least I could fill my freezer for while! SO if Carol is willing, maybe we shoudl trade!!! Course, I don;t know what's in it for her, but a change of "venue!" Yes - I do count my blessings. I know so many are not so lucky. Carol, sound like you're pretty lucky too. A large buck at 50 MPH really can do some damage. I'm glad you're both OK. Too bad about the deer, but sounds like some enterprising pick-up truck driver will get a few meals out of it! |

12 Dec 03 - 06:13 PM (#1071218) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Bee-dubya-ell For me, it was bicycles. Four pristine vehicles over about an eight-year period f***ed up by kids on bicycles running into the driver's side door. Always the driver's side door - never anyplace else on the car. Just plain weird. Since I've been living in the country I've hit two deer, one doing major damage, but that's not unexpected when you drive 500 miles a week on two-lane blacktops at 60 mph. I've learned the trick of driving down the center of the road when possible to give yourself a little more room to see 'em comin'. Bruce |

12 Dec 03 - 06:41 PM (#1071240) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Jeri Jed, if you collided with a deer, it would probably be the deer hitting you, and the deer would probably be drunk. I wrote a little verse about it: Every night they come around But I never hear or see 'em Theyre the quiet sort of drunks, They're deer They quietly sneak across the street Tip toe across the tarmac To munch femented apples Deer beer And who knows what goes on What revels they partake in Do their passions ever carry them Too far? Do they stagger out into the street And pick a fight with Boss Buck Who seems to look a lot like Your car (True story, but no one's hit one yet) Sorry. I know it's not funny. I'm glad you're OK. Has it occurred to you that these guys maybe drank their share AND yours? Too bad no one's invented a drunk detector yet. |

12 Dec 03 - 10:11 PM (#1071335) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: CarolC We were incredibly lucky and we know it. If the deer's head had been lower down in relation to the windshield, one or both of us in the front seats might have been skewered by the antlers. Here's a couple of pictures of the damage: Picture 1 Picture 2 Amos, I've been hit by a drunk motorcyclist (or at leas my car has - different car) as well. Of the two experiences, I don't know if I really have a preference except that I think it would be less traumatic to see a deer die after it hit my car than to see a drunk motorcyclist die after hitting my car. Fortunately the drunk who hit my car wasn't seriously hurt, or I think I would still be having nightmares about that accident. |

12 Dec 03 - 10:16 PM (#1071337) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Amos LOL!! Ok, you don't have to trade...the links don't work for me because I don't look like Carol ("You do not appear to be the owner of this album"). I'm only willing to go so far to see a picture. I think making myself look like Carol is asking too much. And expensive!! I swan! A |

12 Dec 03 - 10:28 PM (#1071341) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Sorcha Oh yes,I'm glad Jed is OK again too. I guess I don't look like Carol either.....lol!Probably just as well for both of us. I have driven litteraly thousands of miles in both New Mexico and Wyoming, never hit a deer. Seen lots in the borrow pits, tho. Always slow down in case they are drunk....or just plain stupid. Not much useable meat on a road kill....most of it will be so bruised/bloodshot that it is inedible. We got about 5 lbs out of a road kill fawn (still in spots) once, but that is all. |

12 Dec 03 - 11:33 PM (#1071367) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Stilly River Sage Hopefully this link takes you to the page with the photos. Amazing how much damage hitting that much muscle can do to your vehicle. Over near Killeen, Texas one afternoon I was watching a buck run at a diagonal to the road we were on and I slowed accordingly. My husband was in the passenger side and asked what I was slowing down for. He didn't have quite the whole sentence out of him mouth before this big animal darted past his side of the truck, across the road in what was our path, and off the other side. I rested my case. |

I was crossing Beeler St. last January, at the corner, with the light, and some dumb bimbo banged my knee. It hurt for a few days, but no serious damage. Funny thing is, the wardsman in Emergency who wheeeled me around used to play for my rugby club. The next time I saw him was twelve years later when I wound up in PA Hospital Emergency after falling off scaffolding. I'm trying to avoid him. He's bad luck ... |

14 Dec 03 - 04:42 AM (#1071941) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Mr Red Just a minor thought but if it was at night would it be any use to hang a few of those cyclist's "reflectors on stalks off" the side of your car? One out of the driver;s window etc is easily removed when parked. Worth a try. Problem is you have to look like a wally 364 days a year for the insurance of it to pay off. You obviously have a route or road culture where you are that would make it worth while. |

15 Dec 03 - 03:10 AM (#1072604) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: mouldy About 14 years ago my husband was over from the UK, working in southern Wyoming for a couple of months, and damaged his hire car one night on his way to Saratoga, where he was staying. It was a deer again. I think he traded the car back in for a more hefty 4x4 after that, having convinced the hire company that he was telling the truth. I'm so glad that none of you guys have been hurt! I don't know how the law stands over there about taking home (specifically) game animals and birds that you have run over. Here I think it is classed as poaching, and therefore technically a criminal offence (although somebody would have to catch you doing it). But as far as I know, anybody else coming along - even in the car behind - can legally pick it up, as they have merely "found" it. Andrea |
|
15 Dec 03 - 05:07 AM (#1072668) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Liz the Squeak That is actually true about the 'poaching' and the next vehicle being able to pick it up. Round about this time of year, in various places in the UK (The New Forest being one), you can see late night drivers in pairs, the first in a land rover or similar, well built vehicle, the other in a small van or car with a large boot. They go hunting in packs. The first vehicle hits the deer and drives off, the second stops and picks it up. If ever stopped by the police, there is no trace evidence of a hit on the vehicle carrying the carcase. Glad you are OK. As a secondary victim of drunk drivers (my brother was killed by one), I know the misery it causes to people. Do you think it's the same guy out to get you??! LTS |

16 Dec 03 - 07:50 PM (#1074107) Subject: RE: BS: Hit and Run From: Mrs.Duck Just a minor point Jed - if the driver of the other car didn't stop how do you know he had been drinking? Anyway glad it was only the car that was damaged and hope you and your family still manage to enjoy Christmas. |
