Obit: Hans Hotter (Lieder singer)

The great lieder singer, Hans Hotter, just passed away. If you have never heard his Schubert song cycles, you should give them a try -- a richer, deeper response than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's (whose versions are in every other respect incomparable). His Wagner work was fine too, but the Schubert lieder (Die Winterreise in particular) are his legacy.

Hi Peter,

Don't sell the great Hans Hotter short.....
His Wotan on the Decca/Solti Ring Cycle from the 60's still is the benchmark for all aspiring Wagnerian Basses. His "Wotans Farewell" from Die Walkure with Birgit Nilsson was & is pure magic.
Mind you, I do like his Schubert lieder also, but then, I prefer Wagner to Schubert.
Cheers
Dave

I wasn't selling him short, I am fond of his Wotan too (had it on this afternoon in homage). It is just that his Schubert is in another league. I notice in one of the obits (the NYTimes)that he too felt that his Schubert was his best work.
