You didn't look quite far enough, gabrielle. If you put God Bless the Child in the search box in the upper-right corner of this page, you'll find it right away. Here's a shortcut: click here.

Billy Holiday didn't write many songs, but when God Bless the Child is one of them, ...well, I would have stopped right there. The song is based on a proverb, according to the sheet music I have. Does anyone know the story behind the song?

I should have mentioned in my last posting that the site I point to is a Billie Holiday web page, so there is a lot of other information there as well.

Just remove the "index.html#song" from the URL I gave above. That is

http://users.bart.nl/~ecduzit/billy

Are the DT lyrics correct?
GOD BLESS THE CHILD
(Arthur Herzog and Billie Holliday)

Them that's got shall get, them that's not shall lose,
So the Bible said, and it still is news;
Mama may have, Papa may have,
But God bless the child that's got his own!
That's got his own.

Yes the strong gets more, while the weak ones fade,
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade;
Mama may have, Papa may have,
But God bless the child that's got his own!
That's got his own.

Money, you got lots of friends,
Crowdin' 'round the door,
When you're gone and spending ends,
They don't come no more.
Rich relations give, crust of bread and such,
You can help yourself, but don't take too much!
Mama may have, Papa may have,
But God bless the child that's got his own!
That's got his own.

Recorded by Billie Holliday, Pearl Bailey et al.

Joe - I've always sung:

  "don't always make the grade"

and

  "when it's gone and spending ends"

The lyrics are correct, in the way that's what Billie Holliday sings. Whitney does your version.

Point of technicality: Billie is singing TO "money". Money is the one who has friends, and when Money is gone, they don't come no more.
