Rick's Album a Go again. (imminent release)

14 Dec 03 - 12:16 PM (#1072071)
Subject: Rick's Album a Go again. (almost cetain)
From: Rick Fielding

As virtually all of you know, cancer has slowed me down quite a bit over the last year.....and other than the general bummer of being in a pretty uncurable situation, one of the real drags for me was that a number of cuts I recorded with some pretty fine musicians (Tony Trischka, for example) have just been sitting in the can.

I can't really play to my former level at all anymore 'cuz the co-ordination just ain't there, but thanks to Mudcatter Paul Mills (who apart from being Stan Rogers' producer and best friend, and has a CV a mile long) we're gonna go for it.

We've hunted down some older recordings to fill out the nine that are finished.......and I'll keep you posted. Even got some Mudcatters in the can (so to speak) like Pam Swan, Mick Lane and Jed Marum!

Thanks for being the Mudcat......and so long to Winter's Wages....ain't it a bitch when reality keeps messing with our community?

Rick

Hey Rick,

That's great news. Now we can play the whole album, instead of putting the two cuts we have on perpetual replay! Good to see you pop up here. Very Happy Holidays to you and Heather. With love from the West Coast Division of Lane, Fielding, Patterson and Swan, Layabouts for Hire.

Rick - good news! Keep in mind that if you can still sing the songs, there are probably bunches of musicians who'd love to do the pickin'. Of course, this would require you to set foot in a recording studio...

Joy joy joy! I am delighted to hear this. If you aren't touring now, and too far for me to come listen in person, I can at least add some more of your wonderful work to the listening mix. All the best. Jeri is of course right; whatever you feel up to doing, I know there are plenty of musicians who would be thrilled to work alongside you.

Rick,

Go for it. That's just great. And ain't it true that these maladys seem to hit us musicians right where we live. It is ;-) sort of like when a pretty girlfriend decides to pick up and split town. In that way "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Malady" (I guess...... ;-)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Make it happen. And isn't the support of folk fans simply the absolute best !!! They say around here that the Cub fans are the best. But you and I know it's the folk fans who top off that mountain.

Onward.

Art Thieme

Like Mick, nothing around here has made me happier.......well, except maybe whoever sent me the Penile Enlargement Pump. It doesn't seem to work but it's fun to use..............Wanna' borrow it? It'll take your mind off a lot of other things......sorta' like Art's humor.

Anyway.......What the hell was this thread about?..............Oh yeah, the album..........This one has always sounded like a great idea and I'm glad you're going to finish it!   A great idea like Bean Soup and Cornbread on a cold, snowy day...........Come to think of it, we had Bean Soup and Cornbread when it was snowing the other day and perhaps I should have used a different analogy. I mean the Bean Soup tasted great but 4 or 5 hours later after 4 of us had ingested the stuff and being in a closed house....the atmosphere got kinda' gamey.

Back to the album......Actually it isn't me that needs to get back to it, it's you.....so do it! Keep us posted so we know when to order! And speaking of posted, what the hell is it with your phone....or do I have the wrong number? A completely likely possibility as my 'puter flopped on me and I'm trying to reassemble whatever I had......This is a lot like trying to reassemble any mind I once had. Maybe the needed material is gone forever.

Love to Heather. She's the real reason I was calling because I've always had a lot more fun talking to her than to you. Karen sends her best as well to you both.

Thanks for the kind words. Paul just brought the almost finished mixes around today, and they seem ok. I may preview a few of the songs on my radio show tonight. Hi Glen.

John: Trischka and I played an arrangement I worked up of the old Les Paul tune "Little Rock Getaway". He's a hell of a player......as well as being a nice guy....even washed dishes after dinner. Heather was amazed!!

When will it be done? Not too long I hope. Still gotta do the notes and cover.

"Little Rock Getaway"? I thought that was a Bill Clinton tune...
Les Paul? Joe Sullivan? Who knows?

Seriously, that I want to hear. Y'know, Amos Garrett lifted the main lick from that tune and used it for the B part of his rendition of Wildwood Flower--sounds real nice that way. (Can't remember how it goes, just that I asked him how he did that with Wildwood Flower and that's what he told me)...

Well,I went to the studio for the first time in two years to try and finish this off, and it was quite an effort.....just no real energy. Played some dulcimer and sang a back up part. God bless Paul Mills for his great encouragement (not to mention fine playing and production. We're trying to waste no time (obviously) and the title is "Tradition", cuz this is not modern music.

We'll let you know about how to get it in a few weeks....still gotta do the cover and notes but so far I like it. It's got quite abit of pickin (done last year when I could still pick) and some older ballads.

JUst leave your name (I'll save this thread) and we'll work it out.

Thanks Mudcat.

It's been quite a while since I've posted to the Mudcat but the recent work with Rick has led me to this thread. It has reminded me what a wonderful community this is. I should check in more often!

I just delivered the master and final artwork for the CD to Borealis this afternoon. Rick and I are both really pleased with the final result. Speaking for myself, I think that you'll find that this is "pure Fielding" - straight ahead and honest. Lot's of hot picking, great energy and a wonderful collection of old and old-sounding songs. The title we settled on is "Acoustic Workshop" which is also the name of Rick's radio show (as most of you know).

It was real important to me that this project get done and I'm so glad that Rick agreed and was able to put the effort in. Thanks, buddy!

I'll let you all know when a release date is set.

Cheers,

Paul Mills

Wonderful songs, both old and new, and of course, great pickin'.

Thanks Paul,(and don't forget Jed's great album that Paul produced last year.)

I AM very pleased with this CD and as soon as we've got a release date we'll let ya know.

Thanks all.

G'day Rick,

Will the CD be available through Mudcat-linked channels? I want one, no matter how, but when I go through the angst of squeezing Aussie dollars halfway round the world through the ether, I like to pick up a few items all in one hit (like some more recent Art Thieme CDs, for starters!) and that keeps down the packing/mailing costs as well.

(I'll just get back to pencilling in the rest of my wish list!)

Regards,

Bob Bolton

A Virtual Release party doesn't sound very exciting, but for those of us not near Rick we should do something. Remember when Jean Ritchie told us when she would be performing on her dulcimer in Ky for the dedication of her instrument and we all tried to play the songs when she did? Maybe something like that OR maybe catter critters could get together at someone's home near them and we could all call the main bash. Maybe we could charge a cover at said bash and send the donations to Rick's choice of charities. I dunno, just ideas off the top of my head? Kat, Spaw, Sorcha, Kendall, Bobert, HEP me out here!

All good ideas, WE, not sure which would work best, but the easiest would probably be all of us planning to sing one of Rick's songs with him at a certain time. COuld do a PalTalk room, but not everyone has that available and I don't think Rick has audio on his computer. Regardless, I think any and all proceeds, if any, should go to Rick and Heather for expenses.:-)

Willie-O's jest showin' off'...'cause he's close to the Source!:-)

Well, danged, Walkin' Eagle, now that's one heck of good idea. A "Grand Opening" kinda release. Hmmmmmm? Where to hold it so we can get as many Catfolk involved. Spring time would be nice.

Yo, Rick. Where do you live? Please don't say like someplace way up in the northern parts of Canada. Lie to me and say, ahhhh, like Pennsylvania 'er better yet Delaware. Yeah, we could rent a community center and have the CD Debut Party of the century... Yeah, we certainly won't have no shortage of musicans... And the food? Geeze o' Pete! Hey, this is doable...

Count me in! Heck, over at Tweeds we got just about every danged Tweezerin lined up to go to Memphis the end of the month fir the IBC )International Blues Competition) so I know we can pull off one heck of a CD party...

Sorry Bobert......Scarborough Ontario. South of the Arctic circle and north of Dubya-land. Actually, I have an idea. We could just co-ordinate with one of the Monday night radio shows. Our time is seven pm. Anyway, plenty of time to mull it over, the album won't be released up here for another few weeks.

Thanks again friends.

I was thinking 'Acoustic Workshop' on Acoustic Workshop too. You could get them pledge phones out and we could call in CD orders. Cram everybody whose name's on the CD into the studio, and buy 'em some party hats and Chinese food. Invite Tinker up to film the whole darned thing... I might be going overboard just a tad.

...but I CAN play your "C song" on the dischordion!

Yer gonna get on a danged airplane and land somewhere in central Pennsylvania in April. Yer gonna stay with WYSIWYG's in, ahh, is it Wilksboro? Shoot, don't matter and we're gonna rent a hall and we're gonna kick off the CD Debut 'an if yout wanta record it fir some radio show, fine! Iget 10% of the take... Jus funnin'... Hey, I'll bet you fifty danged bucks that we can get fifty danged Catter's there fir yer CD Debut Bash...

Oh, yer tapped out and can't afford the airfare? Okay, we'll do what we did fir Kitty West when we got her to Carneigie Hall, we'll beg! Pleaze, oh, pleaze... See, it's do-able, Rick! All you gotta do is say yes and the Bobert will spring into action and have this sorry excuse fir a website singing in beautiful harmony and we'll all be at WYSIWYG's in April for the Bash-to-end-all-bashes!!!

I don't think Rick's too travel ready. We could all just show up in Toronto though, unless the border's a problem. Be warned, if you tell them there's an accordion in your car, they'll want to search it. They nailed me coming home - first time they didn't simply ask who I was and where I was going. (Next time, I think I'll answer "Queen of the Denebian Empire, and I'm headed off for holiday on the Grrzleflarb Pleasure Planet. Please don't mess with the power crystals in the space-glove compartment." Either that or, "Didn't your mother ever teach you not to be so nosey?!")

I think using Acoustic Workshop with call-in is a great idea. Maybe if folks were up for it there could be regional Mudgathers -- near computers with sound cards -- The big boys release from more than one location maybe folks who prepay could have regional pick up parties ... Okay Okay I'll stop now.. Just an idea..

Steve Latimer, I'd like to buy a mute please. And thanks for getting them made!

That Trishka track is magic, but it's not the only high point.

I honestly don't know why Paul couldn't have made arrangements to include 'Dueling Erhus'. I played the track for the guy who runs the local country store (local store, complete with a 'bullshitters' corner' by the coffee pot & donuts) and he laughed his butt off and made me play the whole CD. Said "You gotta send this to Roland!" (local folk DJ) Whenever someone came in, he'd say "Don't say anything - see if he notices," and not one person commented. I think they were being polite. Anyway, I'm creeping the thread.

Perhaps your agent might update your web page?

I'm really thrilled that Rick's CD is finished, there were times when I thought it never would be. In fact, if wasn't for Paul Mills it probably wouldn't have been. Paul was gently persistent, he called every few weeks to mention the CD and that he wanted to finish it - many people would have given up months ago but thank goodness Paul kept at it. Thank you Paul.

I don't know what we'll do to celebrate the CD release but keep those ideas coming, it's inspirational.

Let's all go to Texas instead. I hear it's warmer than infinity-below-zero.

From reasonable to mostly insane:
Seriously, do the radio show, have Paul as a guest to talk about the recording in between songs. Have some of the guys on the CD on the show. Perhaps someone who has a laptop could figure out how to get it hooked up at the studio could log into chat, although I'd guess that whoever's in the studio would probably care more about what was going on there.

Rick has enough friends in Toronto for a concert. OR...there's probably not enough time to make or gather materials for a multi-media presentation. I'm thinking slides or videos (I'm sure someone has some interesting photos and tapes somewhere). "Acoustic Workshop: The Movie" - think about it.

Or just do the radio show.

The temperature is going down, down, down and it's going to be really cold for the next few days - so, yes, I think we'd favour San Diego or Texas but it'll have to be here.

Doing something in conjunction with the radio show is an interesting idea. I think we could get an extra hour for something special but, Paul, we'll have put our thinking caps on and figure out what we could do.

OK folks, as much as we'd all like to head south, it looks like the the launch will be in snowy Toronto. There seems to be a concensus about having the radio show as the focus and that makes sense. I'd like to investigate perhaps having a remote broadcast beamed to the station from a location which has a bit more room for drop-in guests and the odd performer. (Maybe the Borealis office?) My suspicion is that the CIUT "attic" studios mught be a bit cramped for this particular occasion. Heather, how can I find out about CIUT's mobile options?

The final master and graphics made the Borealis office this morning. Yippee!!

We're sending the master and artwork off to the presses this week and I'll inform this forum as to when the little silver discs arrive.
A remote broadcast from the Borealis office sounds like a fine idea for a launch party. We have the room to set up a remote and for that matter a couple of in house pickers.
Cheers to all.

Hi there, thought I'd let you know what's happening with the Rick CD release. I got a call from Paul Mills this morning and he told me that the CD should be ready in two or three weeks, which is really fast work by Borealis and great news.

I guess all you folks who said you wanted to be first on your block to have "Acoustic Workshop could send me a PM and I'll start addressing envelopes and sticking stamps.

It looks like there will be a virtual release CD party at the Borealis Records offices, with a remote broadcast from Acoustic Workshop, CIUT FM, 89.5. We'll be able to take phone calls and get e-mails from listeners so it'll be interactive, but you'll have to supply your own wine and cheese and blow up your own balloons.

Many thanks to Borealis (Bill, Grit and Linda) for all the extra effort they've taken to get this CD out so quickly, and more thanks to Paul, just because.

Heather, how much is it for the CD & shipping? If you don't know the CAD to USD, there's a currency converter here, but it changes constantly, and it looks like the CAD is a bit lower today than it's been.

Those of us who already know where you live can just send a check, eh? But I'd advise people to PM Duckboots so she knows how many CDs she'll need to send.

I also thank Paul Mills and Borealis as I'm very glad to see this musical bud bloom. Would they like to be invaded by a few Yankees? (Those from south of the border, not New Englanders, north-of-the-Mason-Dixoners or members of the NY baseball team.)

Subject: RE: Rick's Album a Go again. (almost certain)
From: Paul Mills

I'm very excited about the way this release idea has come together. All of the Mudcatters notions starting from some kind of "virtual release" party through to being able to purchase CDs so that Rick and Heather get the most possible out of it have all come to fruition.

The release built around the radio show is a perfect idea because it connects this whole community to celebrate Rick's new CD with him no matter where you are. We're doing it at the Borealis office because it's big enough for folks to drop in, say "Hi" and pick a few tunes if they would like to. The CIUT studio is a tad too small for this. And speaking of CIUT, they are fully on the bandwagon and supplying all the support they can for this effort. Big thanks!!

The plans at the moment are this:

The virtual release party will take place on February 16th. It will be an extended broadcast of "Acoustic Workshop" from 7PM 'til 9PM EST. This will be streamed to the internet as usual. We will of course be featuring the CD, but there will also be performances by friends who will drop in.

There will be a toll-free number for people to call in and we'll be able to receive emails and read them on air. You'll also be able to order CDs during the broadcast through the phone or email and charge it to Visa or Mastercard if you'd like. You should know that Borealis has agreed that in doing this you'll be purchasing the CDs from Rick and Heather - that means they'll be getting the lion's share of the proceeds. It would be nice if more record companies were this fair-minded!

We'll be letting you know the number and email addresses as soon as they're settled on. We'll also let you know the coordinates for the Borealis office in case you'll be able to be in Toronto and attend.

Stay tuned for further details!

Cheers,

Paul
