There is not much out there on the net it seems as to the origins of this tune other than it's obvious roots in the blues. Anyone have anything? I know Rambling Jack Elliot recorded it as well as Doc Watson on a live album, and Hazel & Alice. It's much appreciated. Thanks. Leah. |

Same setup for 4 stanzas. There are 2 different yodeling breaks noted, both done over C and G7. (C)For weary weeks I've waited, and (C7) hoping for the best The (F) blues will make me (F7) ramble, and the (C7) rails are leading west I'm (F) feeling, oh, so (F7) lonesome, pleasure I can't (C) find, I'm leaving you mean (D7) mama, just to worry you (G7) off of my (C) mind. 22 Dec 03 - 06:26 PM (#1078019) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Jimmie's Mean Mama Blues From: Stewie Rodgers' biographer, Nolan Porterfield, has pointed out that, despite its title, Rodgers had no part in the composition of 'Jimmie's Mean Mother Blues'. The lyrics were by Waldo O'Neal who had written 'Hobo Bill's Last Ride' and the music and arrangement were by pianist Bob Sawyer who, with unknown cornet, clarinet, banjo and tuba players, backed Jimmie on this piece as Bob Sawyer's Jazz Band. See Porterfield's note in insert to Rounder CD 1060. For an interesting discussion of how the acquisition of this song was revealing in respect of the process by which Rodgers and Peer acquired new material, see Nolan Porterfield 'Jimmie Rodgers' Uni of Illinois Press 1992, pp 238-239. Porterfield points out that 'most of the amateurs who supplied Rodgers with material were eventually convinced to settle for the meagre one-time fee and the glory, real or imagined, of having their work recorded by America's Blue Yodeler'. --Stewie. |
