Can anyone out there give me the chords to Jimmie Rodgers' "Jimmie's Mean Mama Blues"? There is not much out there on the net it seems as to the origins of this tune other than it's obvious roots in the blues. Anyone have anything? I know Rambling Jack Elliot recorded it as well as Doc Watson on a live album, and Hazel & Alice. It's much appreciated. Thanks. Leah.

From "The Legendary Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Folio, Volume One" (Peer International, 1967). Same setup for 4 stanzas. There are 2 different yodeling breaks noted, both done over C and G7.

(C)For weary weeks I've waited, and (C7) hoping for the best
The (F) blues will make me (F7) ramble, and the (C7) rails are leading west
I'm (F) feeling, oh, so (F7) lonesome, pleasure I can't (C) find,
I'm leaving you mean (D7) mama, just to worry you (G7) off of my (C) mind.

Writer credit is to JR, Waldo O'Neal, and Bob Sawyer, (c) 1931 by Peer International.

Rodgers' biographer, Nolan Porterfield, has pointed out that, despite its title, Rodgers had no part in the composition of 'Jimmie's Mean Mother Blues'. The lyrics were by Waldo O'Neal who had written 'Hobo Bill's Last Ride' and the music and arrangement were by pianist Bob Sawyer who, with unknown cornet, clarinet, banjo and tuba players, backed Jimmie on this piece as Bob Sawyer's Jazz Band. See Porterfield's note in insert to Rounder CD 1060. For an interesting discussion of how the acquisition of this song was revealing in respect of the process by which Rodgers and Peer acquired new material, see Nolan Porterfield 'Jimmie Rodgers' Uni of Illinois Press 1992, pp 238-239. Porterfield points out that 'most of the amateurs who supplied Rodgers with material were eventually convinced to settle for the meagre one-time fee and the glory, real or imagined, of having their work recorded by America's Blue Yodeler'.

Here's how I hear the lyrics. The attribution is from the LP Discography web site:

JIMMIE'S MEAN MAMA BLUES
(Jimmie Rodgers, Waldo LaFayette O'Neal, Bob Sawyer)

1. For weary weeks I've waited, and hoping for the best,
But blues will make me ramble, and the rails are leading west.
I'm feeling awful lonesome. Pleasure I can't find.
I'm leaving you, mean mama, just to worry you off o' my mind. YODEL

2. That old gang kindly whispers, "Just fall in line and smile."
Mean mama haunts me and I crave the piece of miles.
I don't know where I'm going. I'm feeling kind o' queer.
I've been from sev'ral places, and I'm going to be from here.

3. Seems there's something missing. There's feelings in my breast.
I crave to cover distance, so mean mama, give me rest.
I hear the rails a-singing. The sky is clear and blue.
I'm going to leave you, mama, when the train comes rolling through.

4. No money in my pocket, I'm loafing around so flat,
And soon I'll be strolling down that railroad track.
And when I'm miles away, riding all the while,
I'll think of you, mean mama. I'll think of you and smile. YODEL
