It worked, and it got me to wonder.....how many times have we all used duct tape for UNintended purposes? Might be a fun thread. Any offers on creative uses of duct tape? Mark |

23 Dec 03 - 04:27 AM (#1078264) Subject: RE: BS: Duct tape From: CarolC Oh... if you only knew... I use duct tape for just about everything. Right now, I've got insulation that's made with bubble-wrap type stuff with an aluminum coating on both sides wrapped all around one of the pop-out sleeping compartments in our travel trailer (or as Seamus calls it our "wee hoose"). It works quite well, too. I've got it stuck on with duct tape. And I sealed some other air leaks in our trailer using duct tape and plastic garbage bags. I tried to make an ant trap by putting syrup on a piece of duct tape with the sticky side up. I caught a few ants with it, but not enough for me to call it a success. The list is pretty endless. One of my mottos is 'with enough duct tape and plastic garbage bags, I can fix just about anything. |
23 Dec 03 - 04:46 AM (#1078270) Subject: RE: BS: Duct tape From: s&r Generally over here (UK) we use Gaffer Tape. I always assumed it was just a name difference as with many US/UK words, bur perhaps not: I found the following trawling GOOGLE: "There is by no means a concensus of opinion here, but everyone seems to agree that there is a significant physical difference between gaffer tape and duct tape, i.e. it is not a difference in terminology between US and UK English. There also seems to be broad agreement that: 1. Gaffer tape is fabric-backed, strong and easily tearable. 2. Duct tape is not as strong and has a PVC backing, but can withstand greater heat exposure than gaffer (hence its use in ducts). 3. There is no such thing as duck tape, either as a trademark or a generic name. However, one off-list response suggested that duck tape was waterproof on the non-adhesive side, i.e. it was so-called because water ran off its back. 23 Dec 03 - 10:48 AM (#1078456) Subject: RE: BS: Duct tape From: Kim C Yep, there is a name brand of duct tape called Duck Tape. You can buy it at any Home Depot or Lowe's store, or just about anyplace like that. 23 Dec 03 - 12:29 PM (#1078561) Subject: RE: BS: Duct tape From: Bill D The reason 'gaffers tape' exists, is that duct tape works too well in some cases. In stage work (where 'gaffers' labor), you want to be able to set up scenery, attach lights, etc., and REMOVE them without sticky residue that duct tape often leaves. My goodwife, Ferrara, and I do craft shows in which we must sometimes run electrical cords across an asile. We use some cheap carpets which we must tape down, but duct tape sticks so well, it will pull the threads out of the carpet used alone.....so...gaffer's tape. |

23 Dec 03 - 11:04 PM (#1078997) Subject: RE: BS: Duct tape From: Bee-dubya-ell JohnInKansas is dead right. Nobody uses duct tape for ductwork any more. The standard tape for ductwork is aluminum tape. Sorta like a very heavy aluminum foil with adhesive on one side. You have to remove a paper backing to expose the adhesive. It's not much good for household repairs because it's a bitch to remove. But it's fun to play with for art projects. Bruce |
