Song Challenge: Barbie Lobster Tale

23 Dec 03 - 10:32 AM (#1078436)
Subject: SONG CHALLENGE: Barbie Lobster Tale
From: Charley Noble

Life can be a challenge along the coast of Maine, especially if you're a member of our State's hard-scrabble lobster fishing community. However, according to our local newspaper, a small group of lobstermen in the Mount Desert Island area are now rising to this challenge in a new and creative fashion:

"BARBIE LOBSTER, ALL DOLLED UP, PROVES EASY TO PICK UP

(AP, Portland Press Herald, 12/23/03, p. 3B)

Mount Desert Island:

A female lobster crawling around off the Maine coast has cheated death at least 10 times, thanks to Barbie and a couple of Mount Desert fishermen.

As a gag, Jim Bright and his sternman, Chris Costello, outfitted the lobster in doll clothes – a blue blouse, a red-and-white checkered shirt and pink high heels – before putting her into a friend's trap in September. "It's a monotony hauling traps day after day," said Costello, "and we just wanted to break it up a little. It totally worked."

Barbie Lobster, as she is known, has been hauled up by various fishermen at least 10 times along the 26-mile channel between Baker's Island and Mount desert Rock. The VHF radios used by lobstermen would buzz with chatter and laughter each time a new sighting of Barbie was reported.

Costello made a special trip to Ellsworth to buy the Barbie clothes. The fishermen had wanted to dress up a jumbo lobster, but it was too fat to fit into the Barbie doll outfit. They choose a svelte 1.5 pound crustacean instead. "They slipped right on, just like Cinderella," Bright said of the tiny pink shoes he and Costello slipped on Barbie. Costello disagreed, saying it was a challenge to put high heels on the little lobster legs. There are four legs on each side, so the men attached the shoes to the center two. "You try squeezing Barbie shoes on a lobster," he said. "That was the most time-consuming thing."

Barbie hasn't been seen since early December and apparently was unkept at the time, with just her pink heels still hanging on. If she and the shoes survive until spring, she may be home free for another season, Costello said. "We have our spring fashions all ready to go," he said.

Maybe there is a ballad here!

Sorry about your morning coffee...

Charley Noble

LOL!! Charley there are a lot of ramifications to this that need reflection!! Why are wizened old Down East lobstuhmen playing with doll clothes? And what strange passion drove some other lobster to rip the dress off Barby Bug? And abandon her...him?... to walk the sea floor dressed only in shoon? Oh, the shame of it!!

This could end up right up theah with Dangerous Dan McGrew!!

You'll have to haul up a tune for this, and I am sure you can come up with a better ending, but here is a first draft for amusement:

The Tale of the Barby Bug

Many tales are told of the waters cold, in the deeps off Mount Desert town,
Where the ocean roar meets the rocky shore, and the cold granite ribs run down
Where the lobsters grow, in the deeps below, and the men meet their fate with a shrug--
But there's no tale told, by those shores so cold, like the tale of the Barby Bug.

Now the lobster traps in the frozen climes, they are manned by a special breed,
Men as hard of eye as a winter's sky, who march to their own good speed,
And their words are few, and if one but knew, their thoughts might be few as well,
'Til the day that their haul brought a Barbie Doll from the ocean's icy well.

It was old Jim Bright, on a dark cold night, and his sternman loyal and strong
With a load of bouys and a muffled noise slipped out past the bell-bouy's gong,
'Round Pemaquid Point down the Indian Shore, while the neighbors slept and snored
But down in the hold, like a pirate's gold, was a bag from K-Mart's store.

Now they'd never told, those boatmen bold, what they bore in that precious bay,
They just snuck it aboard, like a smuggler's horde, as though too ashamed to say,
And it's hard to prove, when they made their move, and slipped their lines and hauled,
But the gossips say that their cargo dark was -- clothes for a Barby doll!

There was an apron neat, so the story goes, and a sweet gingham dress o'blue
And a hat with a ruff -- and if that ain't enough -- six pairs of little pink shoes!
And they hauled the traps in the channel close, while they pulled on their old clay jug,
And before the day, on the deck boards lay, a motherin' old Maine bug!

She had roamed the floor of the ocean shore for a decade -- maybe two!
And anything that a bug could know that that lobster already knew,
She was mean and hard, and at least a yard, she'd a' won any tripper's cup!
But she didn't much cuss, or fight, nor fuss, 'til they tried to dress her up!!

"Now see here", said Bright, "We must do this right! So just hold you her legs and her claws
And we'll slip on these shoes, and this dress so blue, with nary a hitch or a pause!"
So the mate grabbed hold, and he grabbed those clothes, and he thought that he'd made his luck,
'Til Shellback Sue took a differing view, and commenced to nip and buck!

Wal, she bucked and nipped and she clawed and she flipped, and the deck ran with blood and water,
And the cussing rare in the cold night air woulda stunned a fisherman's daughter,
But the men are hard from those Down East yards, and these two were no exception,
When the dawn came round, she was pegged and down, and dressed to rare perfection!

She looked awful sweet, in that apron neat, and those six pairs of little shoes
And they grinned a grin (as they threw her in) as Maine men are wont to do.
Yes they tossed her back, in her shoes and dress, and they nursed their cuts and their bites
And none of the townsfolk ever knew what those two had done that night.

But from time to time, when the fogs close in, on that cold Atlantic town,
And night grows dark outside the hearth, and the winds from the North come down
They say there's a sound on the cold night air, like the hymn of a summer's rose,
And a lobstery voice sings a faint, faint song:
"Oh, thanks for the loverly clothes!"

There are strange things true, I'm telling you
Done by the folks in Maine.
Where the lonely nights and monotonous sights,
Can drive lobstermen insane.
On an autumn day, both windy and grey
Or so the story goes,
Two men with style from Mount Desert Isle
Dressed a lobster in Barbie clothes.

Amos-

I think this is a great start and a wonderful way to model the song. However, I'd urge sticking closer to the story which is funny enough, and I'm still chuckling over an image of the first lobsterman's face as he hauled up a trap and was confronted with Barbie Lobster. Probably blew out his remaining front teeth!

We have a Roll & Go annual party scheduled for next Tuesday and I'd love to sing some version of this song. Please keep working on it; it's a keeper.

And, Art, no puns? Oh, dear, "crushed asians"!

Many tales are told of the waters cold, in the deeps off Mount Desert Isle,

It was old Jim Bright, on a dark cold night, with his sternman loyal and strong,
Throttled down to a muffled sound, slipped out past the bell-buoy's gong,
They swung her bow right toward Baker's Light, while their neighbors slept and snored

And it's hard to prove, when they made their move, and down the Sound did prowl,
But the gossips say that their cargo that day was clothes for a Barbie doll!

There was an apron neat, a blue blouse sweet, and a checkered gingham skirt,
And to go with the deal some pink high heels, for a classic Barbie flirt!
They grinned at them wraps as they hauled their traps, and passed the jug impatient,
And by the end of day, on the deck boards lay, a svelte female crustacean!

"Now see here", said Bright, "We'll do this right! You hold her legs and claws,
And we'll slip on them shoes, and this skirt so blue, with nary a hitch or a pause!"
So his mate grabbed a-holt, and Jim slipped on them clothes, and she sure looked wicked sha'p,
Then they latched onto a buoy of their good buddy Louie, and dropped "Barbie" into his trap.

Now early next morn, they was cruisin' along, with their VHF tuned for chatter,
When with much mirth they heard Louie curse, and then dissolve in laughter;
And for a month or more, as they cruised that shore, their VHF would explode in glee,
As a new lobsterman was swept up in their plan, hauled in a bedraggled Lobster Barbie.

But as winter begins, and the cold north wind, sweeps down on the Deer Isle shore,
As the nights grow long, there's rum and song, and no one ships out any more;
Jim and his friend, their jug upend, and grin at the drifting snow,
For as soon as it's spring there'll be a new fling, for "Barbie's spring fashions are ready to go!"

I think the rhyme of ennui with BAR-by is a stumbling point. Shrug and bug provide smoother scansion; but if you're adamant about using Lobster Barby stet, I would suggest using "hardy" to rhyme unless you can find something better (I know it is n't a pure rhyme but at least it scans well). Offhand I can't think of anything that rhymes purely with Barby, except Darby!

This is a work in process and rhymes, as well as spelling, does need more work. No, we don't call lobsters "bugs" in Maine; we calls 'em "lobsta."

I'm reconsidering a rhyme for "Barbie" but "ennui" is so bad a rhyme that I may just leave it in.

I'm still curious what Alaska Mike might suggest.

The Tale of Barbie Ellen..

In scarlet shell, with pincers swell,
was such a lobster dwelling
Made every fisherman drool and sigh
Her name was Barbie Ellen

Sweet William on the sea shore walked
He saw her slender talons
Blushed rosy pink with Barbie shoes
White flesh like tiny melons

Young William called out Barbie love
I think my heart you're breakin'
Your gingham top, your beady eyes
Have sent my thighs a achin'

But slowly slowly she crawled off
And waggled her tail right at 'im
She slid into the frothy sea
That hard hearted pink crustacean

'Twas in the merry month of May
When green seas were a swellin'
Sweet William on his death-bed lay
For the love of Barbie Ellen.

He sent his servant to the shore,
To the rocks where she was a-dwellin',
Cried, "Master bids you come to him,
If your name be Barbie Ellen."

Then slowly, slowly she crawled back,
And slowly went she did eye him,
And when she pulled the curtains back
Said, "Young man, I think you're lyin'.

"Oh, yes, I'm sick, I'm very very sick,
I'm craving soft crustaceans,
my mouth is watering at the sight
Of the fleshy Barbie Ellen."

"Oh, Ken, where are you, Ken my love
Where are you when I need you?
Sick William wants to fondle me
He's of a different breed dear."

And Ken he came in his hiking boots
Beside young William lyin',
He said William, leave my Barbie love
For she's mine for this evenin's fryin'

And Barbie's heart did snap in two
That both men would deceive her
While both men tried to flatter her
Her heart was like a cleaver

Then lightly crawled she down the stairs,
While Ken was in the kitchen
'Tis neither of you who'll get me now,
if my name be Barbie Ellen.

She wandered to the wide green seas
with never a glance behind her
And plunged into the ocean deep
Where nary a man could find her

and sometimes by the soft moon's light
when fisherman are a sleepin'
she sits upon the lonely rocks
a wailin' and a weepin'

will nea man love me for myself
they only want to eat me
I'll ne'er surrender to their tongues
They'll never yet defeat me

From William's grave hung a fisherman's line,
And from Ken's a copper griddle,
While Barbie Ellen e'er does dwell
Where nae man dares to meddle..

And slowly went she did eye him,
And when she pulled the curtains back
Said, "Young man, I think you're lyin'.

"Oh, yes, I'm sick, I'm very very sick,
I'm craving soft crustaceans,
my mouth is watering at the sight
Of the fleshy Barbie Ellen."

"Oh, Ken, where are you, Ken my love
Where are you when I need you?
Sick William wants to fondle me
He's of a different breed dear."

And Ken he came in his hiking boots
Beside young William lyin',
He said William, leave my Barbie love
For she's mine for this evenin's fryin'

And Barbie's heart did snap in two
That both men would deceive her
While both men tried to flatter her
Her heart was like a cleaver

Then lightly crawled she down the stairs,
While Ken was in the kitchen
'Tis neither of you will get me now,
if my name be Barbie Ellen.

She wandered to the wide green seas
with never a glance behind her
And plunged into the ocean deep
Where nary a man could find her

and sometimes by the soft moon's light
when fisherman are a sleepin'
she sits upon the lonely rocks
a wailin' and a weepin'

will nea man love me for myself
they only want to eat me
I'll ne'er surrender to their tongues
They'll never yet defeat me

From William's grave hung a fisherman's line,
And from Ken's a copper griddle,
While Barbie Ellen e'er does dwell
Where nae man dares to meddle..

The Barbie Lobster Patrol

We were on patrol
Where the blue seas roll
Up off the coast of Maine
Checking the haul
Of the lobstermen's trawls
And trying not to be too much of a pain

When we came upon
A boat at dawn
And over the side we all went
But what we found
Would confuse and confound
And leave our minds permn'ently bent

Some of us laughed
As we climbed out our raft
At the sight which was before us
And some of us gagged
At the lobster in drag
Looking like she'd stepped out of a chorus

Now I've seen
Many a strange thing
And of weirdness I've had my ration
But never before
(and I hope never more)
Have I seen a "Barbie" Crustacean

The crew then spoke
Said it was a joke
Looking as embarrassed as could be
They didn't confess
How they got on the dress
Though it was quite beyond me

I knew right then
This couldn't happen again
Stern measures were called for of course
It could get out of hand
And ravage the land
And from there things could get only worse

So I began a citation
For this Barbie Crustation
But I just couldn't decide you see
Was this lobster dressage
Unlawful Crustacean Knowledge (groan)
Or just plain animal cruelty?

I was saved from this question
By a crewmans suggestion
Why don't we just set Barbie free?
So off came her gown
And her shoes of reknown
And back Barbie went to the Sea

Somewhere in the brine
Her dress and shoes left behind
Is the lobster we all called Barbie
We'll remember her well
As we ride on the swell
Of that rolling blue sea.

You know, come summer there's a string of lobster festivals and other special events down in the Mount Desert Island area. I bet they'll be offering a prize for the best lobster, combining the scores from the swim suit competition, evening dress, and other talent. They might even offer a prize for the best poem. There could be real money in this, gang. Maybe even $5.

Chief Chaos-

You're certainly in the competition, but you've got to be in Maine to compete. Or we'll steal your poem.

Freda-

It's a long run along the "outside track" from Oz but you just might want to consider it. Maybe someone looking for a "traveling companion" would subsidize your trip.

Ugh, I just noticed that neighboring "Deer Isle" sneaked in where "Mount Desert Isle" should be in the last verse. It does scan better but it's geographically askew. The verse should run:

Now as winter begins that cold north wind, sweeps down on the Mount Desert shore;
As them nights grow long there's rum and song, and no one ships out any more;
Jim and his friend, their jug upend, and grin at the drifting snow,
For soon as it's spring there'll be a new fling, for "Barbie's spring fashions are ready to go!"

Thanks for your feedback on "Swabbing Days." "Rack" it should be, but it don't rhyme as well with "head":

I remember well how our old chief said,
As he gently stirred me from my bed,
"Rise up, me lad, and clean the head!"
Now, those swabbing days are gone...

Always thought Tom Lewis would like that song.

I hope you were also able to access the MP3 file on my website. I'm still not sure where I stole the tune.

When I ran across this article on legal issues associated with "Barbie Doll" I considered starting a new thread. However, we may already have exhausted Mudcat patience with this topic and I think it's best to post the article here so that we can sit back and more fully appreciate the context within which our above creative efforts fall, or sink as some would say:

Artist Can Toy With Barbie's Image

An appeals court says Mattel can't sue a Utah man
who makes nude photos of the dolls.

By Lisa Girion, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer, 12/30/03

Maybe it's time for Intellectual Property Law Barbie.

Mattel Inc. could use some help after losing another round Monday in its legal battle against artists who skewer the iconic doll in social commentary.

In the case, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower-court ruling that the El Segundo company had stepped over the line when it sued a Utah artist who photographed naked Barbie dolls stuffed into blenders, rolled up in enchiladas and speared on fondue forks.

The court ruled that the toy maker ought to pay the legal costs Tom
Forsythe racked up defending his "Food Chain Barbie" artwork, a bill that is expected to exceed $2 million.

The copyright law's "fair use" exception gives Forsythe the right to strip and contort the impossibly perfect doll for his art, the court said, so Mattel's infringement claims could be viewed as unreasonable.

After all, the court reasoned, it's not as if Mattel were going to bring out its own version of naked Barbie-in-a-blender. Forsythe's "infringement had no discernible impact on Mattel's market for derivative uses," the court said. "The benefits to the public in allowing such use – allowing artistic freedom and expression and criticism of a cultural icon – are great."

A Mattel spokeswoman did not return calls for comment.

The case is at least the third in two years in which a court has told
Mattel that copyright laws are meant to hammer street vendors who sell
knockoffs, not artists' free expression.

Last year, a New York court ruled out a Mattel suit against an artist who sold Barbie-like "Dungeon Dolls" clad in sadomasochistic outfits. The U.S. Supreme Court this year refused to allow Mattel to press suit against MCA Records Inc. for a Danish band's deriding the doll as a "blond bimbo" in its song "Barbie Girl."

"There has been a disturbing trend with companies using a variety of
copyright and trademark laws to suppress forms of speech they do not like in ways that stifle legitimate criticism," said Peter Eliasburg, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer in Los Angeles who represented
Forsythe. "This sends a message that there is a risk involved in bringing these kinds of cases."

Looks to me as if our creative efforts are legally protected. Of course, I'm not an attorney.

Charley Noble

Parodies arising to either protest an article or to poke fun at something are all not covered by the copyright laws / trademark laws. They're trying to protect an image by suing. Unfortunately I've never seen a barbie doll do enough work to merit all those fancy cars, RVs, Salons, ranches, jumbo jets, etc. At least G.I. Joe has Uncle Sam footing the bill. I've told my wife that Barbie is a high priced hooker. It's the only way to explain away all the wealth she seems to have amassed. She could have gotten it from her parents but that doesn't seem to be in line with the independent image they have promoted over the years.

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE: Barbie Lobster Tale

A judge with a sense of humor wrote his findings on a lawsuit by Mattel against a rockband and their publishers (MCA) who wrote and published a song called Barbie Girl.

The following excerpt is a classic of judicious language:

10502 MATTEL, INC. v. MCA RECORDS, INC.

"After Mattel filed suit, Mattel and MCA employees traded
barbs in the press. When an MCA spokeswoman noted that
each album included a disclaimer saying that Barbie Girl was
a "social commentary [that was] not created or approved by
the makers of the doll," a Mattel representative responded by
saying, "That's unacceptable. . . . It's akin to a bank robber
handing a note of apology to a teller during a heist. [It n]either
diminishes the severity of the crime, nor does it make it
legal." He later characterized the song as a "theft" of "another
company's property."

MCA filed a counterclaim for defamation based on the
Mattel representative's use of the words "bank robber,"
"heist," "crime" and "theft." But all of these are variants of
the invective most often hurled at accused infringers, namely
"piracy." No one hearing this accusation understands intellectual
property owners to be saying that infringers are nautical
cutthroats with eyepatches and peg legs who board galleons
to plunder cargo. In context, all these terms are nonactionable
"rhetorical hyperbole," Gilbrook v. City of Westminster, 177
F.3d 839, 863 (9th Cir. 1999).

The parties are advised to chill.

Amos-

Freda and JennyO are from Downunder and should be excused for their lack of good taste. They are only familar with crabs and Morton Bay Bugs, not the true Lobster Barbie. I owe both of them a lobster dinner down at the Five Islands wharf in return for their warm hospitality.

Oh, and I just realized the timeline is screwed up in verse 5. Here's a quick patch:

There was an apron neat, a blue blouse sweet, a red checkered gingham skirt,
And to go with the deal some pink high heels, for a classic Barbie flirt!
They grinned at them wraps as they hauled their traps, and passed the jug impatient,
And WELL BEFORE day on the deck boards lay, a svelte female crustacean!

And I've learned that there was no "Louie"; "Mark Fernald" was the good buddy who was the first recipient of Lobster Barbie. "Mark" doesn't make it as a rhyme so I propose that he rename himself "Louie."

G'day Charlie,

We almost have a musical cross-link in the matter of Aussie (rock) lobsters ... local species Palinuridae - normally called "crayfish" or "crays" down in Tasmania, which produces the best ones. (And I don't know about "Iron Chef" ... but the last time I could afford cray/lobster was when I was in Tasmania at the time the last Japanese Emperor was dying ... and the Japanese had cancelled all fancy business dinners - so Tasmania had a glut of their best crays that normally are all air-freighted off to Japan!)

Anyway, the bloke who dealt with all these fisheries matters in the '70s also wandered along to the Bush Music Club for some folk music ... he was a banjo-playing Canadian named Don Francois who had been appointed head of Fisheries Research at the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organisation). He was the one who re-named crayfish as "Rock Lobsters" for export (and revitalised the local trout hatcheries by reintroducing vigorous survivor genes from the Australian trout streams.

Incidentally, he seems to have come from somewhere close to your northern borders (indeed, a lot reckoned he was really a Yank pretending to be a Canadian, because that drew less flak!) so he might be an old banjo-plucking friend of someone out there.

Anyway ... back towards the thread!

Regards,

Bob

Nay, let's continue the drift!

"He was the one who re-named crayfish as "Rock Lobsters" for export..."

Smart man to rename your native crustaceans. Reminds me of my Uncle Tessim Zorach who credited himself for reviving the Alaskan giant crab fisheries back in the 1950's by renaming the "Spider Crab" the "King Crab." There's probably a song in that too!

As an update on the Barbie Saga I received this e-mail:

"Thanks for the ballad of lobster barbie. Barb Fernald, our correspondant on Islesford knows the guys and I will forward your
remarkable ballad to her so she can get it to them. I can also run it in the paper.

Earl D. Brechlin

Barb Fernald is probably related to Mark Fernald, the first lobsterman to haul in Lobster Barbie. Actually, Mark was reported to have hauled in Barbie two times, the last time a month later and by then she had lost her red-and-white gingham skirt. At any rate we're getting close to contacting the creators of this "strange tale true" who will either love this ballad or hate it.

Small prawn size lobster (salt water) looking thing - harvested on beaches with a "Yabbie pump" which is a suction tube used to lift wet and up to expose them - these are small size and were often used as live bait for line fishing.

Also larger (fresh water) specimens harvested from dams (in Oz, a man made pond - not necessarily associated with a stream or running water) casually (especially by kids years ago) or now farmed commercially from large ponds. These were usually called "Lobbies" -

Guest Hugh-

You're logically right.*BG* But this is Mudcat and only time will tell when a thread will die...

However, some are still curious about the origin and the lurid details of this story. Here is the earliest printed version I've unearthed, prior to the AP version:

Mount Desert Islander (monthly newspaper), 12/18/03
By Lauren Gifford

'Barbie' lobster is making the rounds

CRANBERRY ISLES – There's something strange lurking on the bottom of the ocean. It has sharp claws, a tough exo-skeleton and wears a tiny pair of pink plastic high heels. It's a 1.25-pound mature female lobster fishermen here have named Barbie, after the popular fashion doll whose clothes she wears.

Barbie has caused quite a stir over the last two months, showing up in traps from Baker's Island to Mount Desert Rock, each time causing a flurry of chatter over the fishermen's radios.

Barbie originally was caught in late September about a mile off Baker's Island by Jim Bright of Islesford and his sternman, Chris Costello. The two had planned to dress up a jumbo lobster and place it in a friend's trap for a few laughs. Mr. Costello, however, showed up for work with a Barbie doll outfit so small it could only fit on a regulation lobster.

Once she was dressed in the blue blouse, red and white checkered skirt and high heels, the men placed the lobster in one of Mark Fernald's traps, a few miles out to sea, west of where Mr. Bright and Mr. Costello first picked her up.

Mr. Fernald found the lobster in September. He was surprised when he first saw her but knew right away it was a joke by one of his friends. He threw her back, wardrobe and all, hoping other fishermen would catch her and get a chuckle. In all, Barbie has been caught about 10 times. Mr. Fernald even caught her two months later about seven miles inside Mount Desert Rock, he said.

While hauling about five miles south of Baker's Island on Nov. 17, Ted Spurling of Cranberry Isles pulled up a trap with Barbie in it. A few days later Steve Philbrook of Islesford caught her about 10 miles south of Baker's Island. "She looked like she had been ravaged several times," said Mr. Philbrook. Her blue blouse appeared to be in rough shape, but she still was wearing her pink high-heel shoes. She had lost her skirt.

Other lobstermen have caught Barbie and tossed her back to keep the gag going. It has been reported that Bruce Fernald of Islesford, Robert Higgins of Southwest Harbor and Todd Goodell of Bar Harbor have hauled her up.

Barbie is not the first time fisherman have had fun with catching the same lobster. It is common to find a large lobster with initials and a date carved in its shell or one with a rubber band on its tail, said Mr. Spurling.

For Mr. Bright, marking lobsters has brought more than a few laughs. "I think it's interesting to see how much they trap," he said.

Like the rest of the lobster population in the Gulf of Maine, Barbie was moving fast during November, a big feeding month when the crustaceans move into deeper water in search of food. It was during that time when several fishermen caught her in succession.

Barbie has not been caught for a few weeks. Fishermen are pulling up their traps for the winter and Barbie has lost most of her outfit so it's likely she will not be recognizable.

"Last I heard," said Mr. Spurling, "the heels were gone but she still had the top."

Stay tuned! We'll see if we can get some closing remarks from Jim Bright and Chris Costello.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Perhaps, you could promote the concept to the Red Lobster chain.

I was idly musing over the Lobster Barbie saga when another old ballad popped into my mind:

Off Mount Desert Isle where I was born,
There was a crustacean fancy-free,
Made every decapod cry, "Well-a-day!"
Her name was Lobster Barbie.

I'm sure we could get Charlie the tunafish for a cameo if not the part of the wise old sage.

The Gortons fisherman could find her in his trap and remembering his younger years set her free.

Ah the curse of the creative mind!

I remember reading this story in the Portland Press Herald.
It is the sort of thing one cannot forget.

Two-toned lobsters are rare as hen-teeth but so far no one has been inspired to compose a song.

What kind of music
would a two-tone lobster inspire, anyhow --

a duet?
an ensemble?

barbershop harmonies?

Maybe it's a rhythm and blues version of "The Lobster Quadrille."

Is that the lyric that goes,

'Tis the Voice of the Lobster,
I heard him declare,
You have baked me too brown,
I must sugar my Hair ...

Nice video of the lobster but watch out for the nasty ad; it doesn't give you an option for avoiding it.

I've seen blue lobsters and white lobsters but this one is new to me.
