28 Dec 03 - 04:17 PM (#1081082) Subject: Folklore: Planxty Ticket for Dublin Vicar Street From: Chris from Dublin Hi all, Have you heard about the Planxty reunion ? Planxty was one of Ireland's best folk groups in the 70's, the band split for good in 1983 and have not performed together since. The original lineup with Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn and Andy Irvine (all famous now as solo artists)have announced a series of Irish Concerts for January and February 2004. They play in Ennis in the Glor Irish Music Centre on the 23th & 24th January. They play in Dublin's Vicar street - a fine venue with tables and great atmosphere - on 30th, 31st January, 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th February 2004, all concerts have been sold out within a day. I am looking forward to see the guys on the 11th Feb (first row, wow !). Unfortunately I got now a second ticket for the same date as a gift. If it would be for any other day I would not mind to see them twice or more times...So now my question: Is there anyone out there who is interested in the second ticket (Table 20, 3rd row, very good seat). I do not want to make any profit out of it, so I will give it away for the original price of € 55 (no joke, this is the original price, times are a-changin as Dylan would say... if you compare this to the prices in the 70's) Looking for your answers, Chris |

28 Dec 03 - 05:11 PM (#1081107) Subject: RE: Folklore: Planxty Ticket for Dublin Vicar Street From: GUEST,JB I really would not have a problem with the price, high though it really is for so-called folk. However I would be more sceptical about Planxty being able to revive the old spark of the early 70`s. I listened to loads of the solo works of the individual artists throughout the years. Christy was brilliant during the early years of his solo career, then unfortunately he fancied himself as a songwriter and recorded two CDs entitled Grafitti Tounge and Traveller. Sorry Christy they were both shite and I have stopped listening to you. That is not to say that Christy can`t write a good song, but he ain`t no songwriter for a complete CD. The Traveller CD especially was most embarrasing as he used cheap keyboard rhythms and most of the material was rehashed and sounded awful. That smacked to me of cheap commercialism. I really felt like asking for my money back. He may be getting the message though, as his more recent CD "This is the day" was like getting back to the roots and he had some of those great musicians back with him from the early days. No computers or punched-in rhythms. No, I think I would prefer to remember Planxty as they were in Slattery`s in 1972/73. Let someone else pay the €55. JB |

How I'd love to see all that again! But it not just the €55 but the cost of travel to Dublin and somewhere to stay...so I think I'll have to miss out. I still have all my old tapes, and I'm not so embittered as to dismiss Christy Moore's experimentation after Planxty, much of which was interesting and musically intelligent. His solo career "early years", however, were passed in England - in Manchester and London - well before the Planxty era and Slattery's. |
