Tech: Walliostro banjo mandolin

I've just obtained an old banjo mandolin. It says "Walliostro zither mandoline" on the peghead. I believe it's from England, and the previous owner thought it was from the turn of the century (20th), but I really have no idea. Does anyone have any information about this company, their instruments and their histroy? Also, I need to find a new bridge for it, as the existing one is too high, and I need to lower the action. It would be a wooden tenor banjo-type bridge. I want to keep the original one as is just in case I need it, rather than sand it down. Anyone know a good place to get such a thing (US, preferrably, as that's where I live)?

thanks,
Jack

Jack,

Are you anywhere near New York City? If so, Mandolin Bros. would be a good bet.

And speaking of tech stuff, I have not been able to make a blue clicky using the utility that Mudcat provides. Sorry, Jack.

Thanks, Jerry. Mandolin Bros. would be a good bet. I'm a ways from NYC, in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I'll do a search for them on the web and see if I can contact them.
Thanks,
Jack

For any banjo-related parts try Stewart-Macdonald or Elderly Instruments. Both are in US and on the Web, and they do mail-order.
Good luck with your new banjo.

Jack,

If you're ever out west (Western Mass, that is), there's a first rate shop in Amherst called the Fretted Instrument Workshop. They don't have a website, but here's the address:

Fretted Instrument Workshop
49 South Pleasant Street
Amherst, MA 01002
413.256.6217

Strum on!

Thanks for the info, Jerry. I'll give them a call and see if they can fix me up with a new bridge for it.

Hi Jack,

Your story sounds very similar to mind. I when home Christmas and my mum handed me Walliostro Zither mandolin. She said it was my Great great granddads which would tie in with your turn of the century idea. I am English and so was he, which also backs up your information I have also had trouble with the original bridge being particularly high. I don't know how similar these two instruments are but I would love to see a picture.. b_beazley@fsmail.net and I would be happy to send one.

Take care
Ben
