However, if you define greatest as having the greatest impact then my vote goes to the songs that 'have a go' in a more subtle manner. "James Larkin" - poor. "James Connolly" (which one, there are at least 4)? All average, or just slightly above. "Legion of the Rearguard" - yes, great song - even if a bit politically dodgy re hailing Dev as the great Republican. As a song tho, overlooked thus far. One of the lads in the band heard it somewhere and brought it to rehearsal one night. We all loved it, and had it in "ready repertoire" two weeks later. It's always a hit wherever we do it. And for powerful lyrics suitable for mass consumption, let's not overlook "Galway Bay." Not the "in your face" kind of rebel song, but powerful in its own way. This "list" has already garnered mention for many of my personal favorites, but, (with apologies to Jimmy Durante) "I got a million of 'em." |

It demonstrates a bias of yours that you and I disagree on. But folks, Pete and I are good friends, so it is a friendly disagreement. The bias is wrong, IMHO, because it denies the basis of the rebel song. The Irish have been trying to throw off the yoke of an oppressor who was better armed, had one of the finest standing militaries in the world, and who had imperial/colonial ambition and felt it was their right to subjugate other cultures. Without getting into a discussion of the rightness of that (thus hijacking the thread), you simply cannot have a thread about these rebel songs without those issues. It was because of those very things that the Irish rebelled over and over again. It has been said that we love our martyrs. All freedom fighters do. The songs exist precisely because of this. And that is what makes them great. In spite of the disadvantages, in spite of the certainty of death, the struggles went on. To eliminate them is to almost apologize for this aspect of the Irish character. And we just aren't going to do that. Terry, bear in mind that "West's Awake" was written in 1843 - so the language reflects this. "Foggy Dew" (1919) - very imaginative lyrics and a melody that takes some beating. Again, tho, a matter of personal taste. I have a special reason for loving this one as it was my late brother's favourite, I'll never forget his guitar picking on that song. A "GUEST" said on Mudcat a couple of years ago that "Four Green Fields" (not on either of my lists!) was in fact written by Tommy Makem's mammy: Sarah. |

As for Protestant and Catholic Irish rebels: Roger Casement, Wolfe Tone, Munro, Henry Joy McCracken, Robert Emmett -- all Protestant, and just a very few names indeed out of many. I heard a song about it; I have it somewhere. "So here's to all those brave Protestant men/Who gave their lives to free our land./All the people sang their praises then/Those brave United Irishmen." I was sat in the South Pole Inn, former home of, Tom Crean one of the greatest heroes Ireland produced, last year playing a few songs on my guitar when an old guy in his mid eighties, sang the song and the passion, sentiment and sadness that came across in his voice had me realising that although he can't have been present, it must have had a direct effect on him personally because tears were descending his cheeks as he sang. Maybe a family member had suffered in the rising but whatever it was his grief was personal apart from that he showed whilst singing the song I'd never heard the song before but learned to play it and it has become a favourite song of mine. I vote The Dying Rebel and thank an old man for introducing me to a beautiful song sang with meaning. |
