THE PRECIOUS JEWEL
Recorded by Roy Acuff
Words and music by Roy Acuff

Way back in the hills, when a boy, I once wandered
Buried deep in her grave lies a girl that I love
She was called from this earth, a jewel for heaven
More precious than diamonds more precious than gold.

When a girl of sixteen, we courted each other
She promised someday to become my sweet wife
I bought her the ring to wear on her finger
But the angels they called her to heaven one night.

A jewel here on earth, a jewel up in heaven
She'll brighten the kingdom around God's great throne
May the angels have peace, God bless her in heaven
They've broken my heart and they left me to roam.

This world has it wealth, its' trials and troubles
Mother earth holds her treasures of diamonds and gold
But it can't hold the soul of one precious jewel
She's resting in peace with the heavenly fold.

May the angels have peace, God bless her in heaven
They've broken my heart and they left me to roam.

Acuff also sang it on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," maybe as good a collection of bluegrass and traditional music as ever recorded, with Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, Merle Travis, Vassar Clements, the Dirt Band and an excellent group of back-up players. --seed

I am looking for lyrics to a song recored in the '30s or '40's by Roy Acuff, I believe, titled "A Jewel on Earth". Some lyrics I can still remember: Way back in the hills, where a boy I once wandered. Very deep in her grave lies the girl that I loved....

and the chorus is something like: A jewel on earth, a jewel in heaven. She'll brighten the kingdom around God's great throne. May the angels have pity, God bless her in heaven, they've taken my true love and left me to roam...

But that's all I can remember. Please help me if you know all the words.

I do, but, why not try cowpie first? If it's not there I'll post them.

(Acuff-Rose)

Way back in the hills as a boy I once wandered,
Buried deep in the grave is the girl that I loved.
She was called from this earth, a jewel in heaven,
More precious than diamonds, more precious than gold.

CHORUS: A jewel here on earth, a jewel in heaven,
She'll brighten the kingdom around God's great throne.
May the angels have peace. God bless her in heaven.
They've broken my heart and they've left me alone.

When a girl of sixteen, we courted each other.
She promised one day to become my dear wife.
I bought her the ring to wear on her finger,
But the angels they called her to heaven one night. CHORUS

This world has its woes, it's trials and troubles.
Mother Earth holds her kingdom of diamonds and gold,
But she can't hold the form of one precious jewel.
She's resting in peace in the heavenly fold. CHORUS
