Newark Notts U.K. - clubs or sessions?

Looks like I will be spending some time based in Newark at the end of the week (9th January on) and would be interested in any Folk Clubs or sessions within easy reach. I will have vehicular transport and a number of assorted instruments to hand.Either Posy in here or P M me.
Thanks in advance.

Either Barrow on Humber on Tuesday or Goxhill on Wednesday - both in N. Lincs and @ 1hr 20 mins drive from Newark.

I hope this is helpful.

Both sessions are actually in pubs (public houses, ale houses, taverns, inns etc.) The one in Barrow is at the Six Bells in the centre of the village, Goxhill's session is at the Brocklesby Hunt pub, very near the railway station. There is a frequent train service from here to Cleethorpes (pronounced Clee-eth-or-pees) and Barton without hyphens, though not in the evenings, so I'll edit that bit of useless information before hitting the submit button in a minute.

If you turn up to either session, folks will make a fuss of you, though there may be a marked absence of birthday cake. Bulk in the Corner will collect you and put you up overnight, I'm sure because he is a kind man.

It would be great to see you again, Mr Fingers.

Hi Leadfingers
Welcome to Newark - six butchers shops within walking distance of the market place and not a single greengrocer. Farmers' market is fourth Thursday in the month. The smell from the sugar factory will go away about the end of February, but I quite like it anyway.
Sorry we don't have a folk club anymore.
Jennifer

There's a folk club at the Brown Cow, Mansfield, on Tuesday nights I think. (Might have website.) On the right as you approach town centre from Newark, so very easy. About 30-40 minutes' drive. (You could pick me up en route!)

The train that goes through Goxhill to Barton or to Cleethorpes going the other way does run in the evening, Oakley you big liar.

Its time someone tried to revive the Folk Club in Newark. We came over a few times when it was in the Vine (smelliest toilets evr) but didn't like the pub near the Market Place. (Can't remember what it was called)

Thanks for the info all of you. Peter, if you PM me a landline no I will give you a ring IF I am going to Mansfield on Tuesday. Guest Jennifer - I did actually get to Newark F C when it was in the grotty pub by the Market place (Kings Head ?). I visit Newark regularly as I have family there, but usually NOT for long enough to look for clubs etc.

The folk club had three and a half homes. I think "the grotty pub near the market place" was no.2, the Woolpack, we turned up one evening and it was inexplicably closed so we went wandering and ended up in the Castle and Falcon, via a trendy bar down Millgate for one week, where they had to play outside because it was so noisy. C & F was OK, lovely big room across the car park, but in the end there were so few people going we wondered why we were struggling on and gave up. People had late work commitments, went away to college, didn't really like folk music and only came along to keep husband company, couldn't get a babysitter every week etc etc. Also being tucked away in a separate room there was no chance for the curious bystander to drift in. There was a suspicion that we had committed a folk-pas by not supporting neighbouring clubs, but the same individual problems that dogged us making it into the town once a week(plus one member not having a car) made that even more difficult.
So there it is. I'd be game to have another go but wouldn't be much good at organising it, I'd never been to anything like that before.
Jennifer

Sorry MR. I would like to publicly point out that the train does indeed run in both directions until 18.30.

Sorry for any confusion.

A few years back, the landlord of the White Swan would have loved to have a folk club, but he didnt have a room suitable and being grade II
listed couldnt knock a wall or two out.And He would have been only to happy if the club booked me 'cos my nephew WAS that landlord. Works in the Wheatsheaf for Ben now. If you look in say hello to Duncan from me.

So what is the train that stops at 2145, then? You're just making this stuff up, Oakley.

Hi Leadfingers - if you fancy taking up MR & Oaklets kind invitation to Barton on the Tuesday I shall be travelling that way myself from Lincoln and would be happy to give you a lift. PM me and I'll give you a number.
(Sooz - I occasionally attend the Lincoln folk club, but really prefer to play WITH others, rather than the 4 tune solo sets beloved of Matt & Chris. If only there were a session in Lincoln or Newark these days....)

GUEST at 5.16pm- If you had a Cat Name I could PM you but as you are totally anonymous this is a bit difficult.

That sounds like Daithi to me, Lead. Poor lad comes all that way to our sessions rather than play solos in Lincoln

MR, the 21.45 train is the quarter-to-ten overnight sleeper service to the coast. Making it up indeed! Harumph.

I was only talking to Skip yesterday about bringing some Barton-without-hyphens eclat to the Gringley without hyphens on the hill or Walkeringham or Misterton. I have sharpened up my bassoon and have strapped it to me bike. Skip has polished his nuts in readiness.

Gringley here we come, then.

Down the M180 to J2, head towards Gainsborough on the A161 untill yer nose starts to bleed. Turn right at Misterton Church and follow the road to Gringley.

Thanks for the tip Gerry - sadly, as you can see from the above posting, Oaklet has intercepted the message and has even now begun to develop invasion plans. So no relief from my afflictions there, then. Plus, I don't think I can play many English or French tunes. (Or much else, before you say it!)
