BBC 4 - 9 Jan -Transatlantic Sessions 2

Subject: ALERT! - TRANSATLANTIC SESSIONS 2
From: Ian HP

Following on from a previous thread about the BBC's decision not to screen The Transatlantic Sessions 2 in England as in Scotland, I urge all English Mudcatters to complain. Their email: info@bbc.co.uk The address to complain to (given me by a friend who 'phoned BBC Scotland to complain, this is the address they gave him): BBC 1 Controller, BBC TV, TV Centre, Wood Lane, London, W12 7RJ. Anyone reading this thread, please renew it so that maximum people see it. Thanks.

The Transatlantic Sessions 2 starts on UK TV BBC4 next
Friday 1930-2000.

The Radio Times gives - Transatlantic Sessions 2 - 1-7.
Which suggests that this is the first of seven. But were there seven shows in the second series? I have the CDs but have no idea how many shows there were - never having seen the second series.

I shall have to try and watch them live (I haven't worked out how to video BBC4 yet).

Assuming that your VCR has a channel tuned into your digibox, then just tape that channel (on mine it's channel 6).

If your VCR does not have a channel set up for digital, then you need to make sure that your VCR has a connection to the digibox, and go to the setup/tuning menu, and tune a channel into the digital signal.

Certainly very good in parts - but why the sha-la-las at the end of 'Who knows where the time goes'? And that a capella gospel bit at the end? The first sessions - the REAL Transatlantic Sessions - were better by far. I have a poor quality video made from the Tara screenings before that excellent source of folk music went bust, and the sheer musicality of it all still gives me goose pimples.
Still, it's nice to see Mr Bain, Russ the guitarist, Danny 'Pentangle'Thompson and others from the first series.
Anybody got a tape of the first series they'd like to coy for me???

The Paul Brady song was a bit pop-ish but on the whole it was excellent, now that man Aly Bain CAN play a fiddle.

And I STILL can't work out how to record from my freeview box. The VCR just won't recognise it.

All together now, in words of one syllable please ....

If your Freeview box is connected to the TV via aerial, then you can tune your TV and video to the Freeview box. I have channel 7 on TV and video for this and now I can record from BBC4. I have never managed to get the scart connection to work properly from Freeview, although scart to TV from video and DVD is fine.

The media commentators in the press are noting that since BBC4, through its own transmission service, is only available to a very small number of the license paying population should not the best programmes be initially put out on the terrestrial channels until 2010. This, we are told, is when BBC terrestrial services will end. As well as "The Clark Diaries" I feel the "Transatlantic Sessions 2" should be easily available to all. I urge all interested to make their feelings known the BBC and, perhaps, effect a change of heart.

Last week I sent the follwing email to radio.times@bbc.co.uk - for publication.

The Transatlantic Sessions 2.

Can you please congratulate all concerned for bringing the second series of Transatlantic Sessions to BBC 4 on Friday nights. This is a fine example of how to bring non-pop music to our screens. It has no gimmicks or presenters - just the very fine music. Are there any plans to re-show the first series or to bring this brilliant series to a wider audience or indeed any plans for a Transatlantic Sessions 3?

Shambles, for Shables, read Shambles. Every now and again the "m" on my computer goes missing and I have to reset.

Re recording from digital, I have to put my video for AV2 and make sure digital is switched on or it won't tape. I think if I had another SCART lead I could do it but there's such a tangle of wires back there with a satellite, freeview, DVD and VCR I might never get it set up again.

Friday the 30th. It was all great except for an appaling song by John Martyn, he seemed to be either crying or groaning succesively,
bloody awful noise.

Missed it apart from the last ten minutes.

Switched on just in time to see John Martyn. Awful. Embarrassing. Took "self-indulgence" to new heights (or depths).

Fortunately, Iain McDonald's piping along with Jerry Douglas doing some amazing Dobro accompaniment saved the day.

I just wish I could have seen the rest of it...
