Thanks to Sorcha

Sorcha,

I was looking at an old thread on Fanny Power and found the site you linked to there-- JC's ABC tune finder. I can barely read music and all the other on line ways of getting tunes are even more tedious. I am so grateful for this site-- I was able to print off the musical notation (PDF) for several tunes I want to work on with my new harp and now I can do that. What especially nice is that some versions have chords, some versions cite composers (info not always readily available) and you can occasionally get the tune in morethan one key or time signature. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I generally learn tunes by ear but there's always the risk that I'll miss notes or ornamentation. This way I can listen and have a visual reference...

I'd have thought that you should thank John Chambers...

No offence intended, Sorcha. You certainly do a great job in helping the search enginely challenged!

Bekki,
This is an excellent online virtual session. It's probaby worth checking out.
BBC Virtual Session

A lot of people here have recommended it for learning tunes and playing along.

There is a useful thread, which is about fiddle playing, but there are some good links there that are worth looking at, too. See my personal favourite (I play lever harp, not fiddle) which is the Old Time Music MIDI Archive - 19th and 20th Century dance which is worth it just for a listen to some very fine music.

Also you may be interested in the e-mail Harplist. There are lots of wonderful people on the list and we share a lot of info, and experiences, etc, just like here at Mudcat.

For full membership with access to the yahoo harplist website, which of course is a good option, you need to go to

Harplist

You'll be walked through the sign-up.

If you just want the emails, and never plan to go to the yahoo harplist site, you can send a blank message to
harplist-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
You will have to "reply" to a message Yahoo will send you, but you'll be signed up just that easily.

Once you are a member, there are several commands which can be activated with an email.

To switch to digest, send a blank message to harplist-digest@yahoogroups.com
To unsubscribe, send a blank message to harplist-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
To go "no mail", send a blank message to harplist-nomail@yahoogroups.com
To go to individual messages (from digest or nomail status), send a blank message to harplist-normal@yahoogroups.com

The above commands may not go into effect unless you "reply" to a message yahoo sends you.

Aw, shucks, she says, digging her toe in the dirt...like Ed said, all I do is find them. But, did you know that at JC's you can first open the GIF, then, scroll down, and open the MIDI, minimize the MIDI and it will play while you watch the sheet music...handy, that!

I DID thank John Chambers, more than once--- he is very quick to answer emails and help me find tunes (especially when I know the Englishized name and not the Gaelic!!!) :)

Many thanks to Helen for the info on harplist-- and to Sorcha for fine tuning my ability to use the tunefinder site, I will try that, thanks for the tip. I'm more of a musician that a computer geek and need all the help with it I can get.

Love you guys!!!

Those of us who were lucky enough to get copies of Bronson's "The Singing Tradition of Child's Popular Ballads," will never forget her efforts; if not one of the labors of Hercules, close enough!
(now interleaved in a huge binder with material from other "Singing" sources).
