I'D LIKE TO BE IN TEXAS
WHEN THEY ROUND UP IN THE SPRING
Writers: Carl Copeland & Jack Williams

In the lobby of a big hotel
In a New York town one day
Sat a bunch of fellows telling yarns
To pass the time away
They told of places where they'd been
And different sights they'd seen
Some of them praised Chicago town
And others New Orleans.

In a corner in an old arm chair
Sat a man whose hair was gray
He listened to them eagerly
To what they had to say
They asked him where he'd like to be
His clear old voice did ring
I'd like to be in Texas
When they round up in the spring.

They all sat still and listened
To the words he had to say
They knew the old man sitting there
Had once been young and gay
They asked him for a story
Of his life upon the plains
He slowly then removed his hat
And quietly thus began.

I've seen them stampede o'er the hills
Until you'd think they'd never stop
I've seen them run for miles and miles
Until the leader dropped
I was foreman on a ranch
The calling of a king
I'd like to be in Texas
For the round up in the spring.

I can see the cattle grazing
O'er the hills at early morn
I can see the campfires smoking
At the breaking of the dawn
I could see the bronchos neighing
I can hear the cowboys sing
I'd like to be in Texas
For the round up in the spring.

Craig Johnson wrote a great parody of this song. It's called "I Want To Be In Brooklyn For The Blackouts In The Spring"

WELL, YOU ASKED FOR IT! BLAME YOURSELVES! (Enjoy too!!)
Here it is---Art

I WANT TO BE IN BROOKLYN FOR THE BLACKOUTS IN THE SPRING
by Craig Johnson (a great old timey performer & member of the Double Decker Stringband, and a fine songwriter of midwestern songs--mainly about the Northern states
but not this one...

In a Travel Lodge in Texas sat a bunch of average geeks,
Pickin' at their waffles-- discussin plans of ease,
Boastin' of their conquests--how they always got it free,
Some praised Sarah Faucett Marjors and others STP.

Well, an old man sat beside them in that coffeeshop that morn,
Paging through the New York Times--his face was all forlorn,
And they asked him for a story of his life back in the east,
He folded up the paper and slowly said his piece.

Well, I've seen 'em shop for hours 'til you'd think they'll never stop,
Seen 'em mob the A.& P. when the price of coffee dropped,
I've walked through the slums for miles and miles and never seen a thing,
And I'd like to be in Brooklyn for the blackouts in the spring.

CHORUS)
I can feel the subways rumblin', I can hear the factories blare,
I can smell the diesel bus--I can't even breath the air,
And I've seen those porno bookstores where the faded harpies sing,
And I'd like to be in Brooklyn for the blackouts in the spring.

I can see them rich restaurants where the Wall Street gamblers meet,
I've seen a herd of poodles lined up pissing in the street,
And I've seen those disco bars where the younger set does meet,
And I'd like to cop a tape deck in the blackouts in the spring.
