Make a Getaway Camp Song

Hello everyone!

The following idea came to me in the shower this morning. The Getaway needs a camp song. I suggest we steal a song (in the best folk tradition) and make our own verses. I learned the following camp song at Philmont Scout Ranch. I later learned it was also sung in the Armed Forces. The first two verses are learned (but altered for the Getaway). The last one I made up. One suggestion: try not to have your verse end in "all the time", it gets old quickly.

The coffee here at Philmont they say is mighty fine,
It's good for cuts and scratches and tastes like Iodine.
CHO:
I don't want no more of Philmont life.
Gee, Ma, I wanna go. But they won't let me go.
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home.

The biscuits here at Philmont they say are mighty fine,
But one rolled off the table and killed a pal of mine. CHO:

The purists here at Ramblewood they say are mighty fine,
But they want to sing all verses and they know ninety-nine.
CHO;
I don't want no more of Getaway life.
Gee, Ma, I wanna go. But they won't let me go.
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home.

Roger, he knows every song ever written about food
And every time he sings, I'm in a hungry sort of mood

It's a long, long way uphill to just get to the gym
And then we walk uphill some more to get back down again

Showers here at Getaway, provide us water hot
Translucent shower curtains tell the tales we'd rather not

Music here at Getaway goes through the night they say
The lines about the coffee machine testify next day

The average age at Getaway's a secret never told
It's only the age we're acting and that's very young and bold.

So sad to say the Getaway's a place I've not yet been
From what I hear though, newcomers are kindly welcomed in.

2004's the year I hope to visit Ramblewood
I've wanted to for oh so long. This year I think I should.

And all you other mudcat folks, who've said, "I'll go someday."
Perhap's 2004's the year YOU'LL make the Getaway!

Found myself so inspired- last year's thread was so very great
Told myself, Get moving, don't put it off 'til it's too late
But you know what? Try as I might, nobody seems to know
When the Getaway IS, so that I can make plans to GO.

Very nicely done everyone! Let's keep going! Ebbie, I suspect the date for the next Getaway has not been set in stone. Normally it is the weekend after Columbus Day.

The chantey men at Ramblewood they say are might fine,
But they're either drinking whiskey or "haulin' on the line."

The folks that come to the Getaway
they say are mighty fine
but one of 'em drives her car on stump
and nearly broke this back of mine

The Shellbacks came to Ramblewood
a pleasant gang of Brits
We had some fun and shared some songs
and none were gits or twits (scared ya, didn't I Noreen?

Oh I can't wait for October
To head east once more
and share the music with dear friends
on the Susquehanna shore

When the lorry was on the stump
the same old thing was seen
18 Brit supervisors
with one Paddy in between hahahahahahahahaha

The vultures that were perched above
they looked so very grim
Aul Mick opined that he was afraid
they'd shit a chipmunk down on him

Gee but I miss old Ramblewood,
Oh how I wanna go, can't wait to hit the road,
Oh how I wanna go back

Not bad Micca...lets keep it going.

Most are no good
When they come to Ramblewood
Most are soooo....out of luck
Gawd! Their songs really suck

Gee Ma...I don't want to go
But they... have taken my dough
Gee Ma....don't make me go
Back...to Ramblewood.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Same old shit from Gargoyle
We see it all the time
Methinks he would be better off
making a living as a mime

MMario: Works for me. Sorry 'bout that; I'm usually better at scansion but I haven't heard the song in over 20 years (since teen travel camp). That and I was at a filk con last weekend so I'm quite badly underslept!

The women at the Getaway, we leave the kids behind
To flirt with Mick and Joe and JAB we stand all in a line

We giggle, laugh and harmonize
and tell each other jokes
and this last year the songs were fine
from all those English folks

"Oh, the harvest moon on Ramblewood full doth surely shine,"

"Nay, tis not the moon you see, but the wandering Micca's behind,

He's perambulating up the hill, you see, in search of love or dry sack,"

"Aye, you're right, for now I see, the moon ne'er had such a crack!"

Friend Micca, if you'll cross the pond, Mick will refill his flask
Then going uphill everywhere won't seem so hard a task!

They say that at The Getaway the songs dont have to rhyme
as everything is uphill you always have to walk

Theres lots of different music from slow to quick , sublime
or hark to Fortunato, he'll sing you a good "old time"

Sweet harmonies, in voices raised, great picking and good strumming,
But Micca, you've not told us yet...This year, will you be coming?
