NINE BELOW ZERO (Sonny Boy Williamson II)

Yeah, ain't that a pity, people ain't that a cryin' shame
Ain't that a pity, I declare it's a cryin' shame
She wait till it got nine below zero, and put me down for another man

I give her all my money, all of my lovin' and everything
All of my money, all of my lovin' and everything
It done got nine below zero and she done put me down for another man

Nine below zero, the little girl she done put me down
Nine below zero, the little girl she done put me down
She know I don't have nowhere to stay, and I don't have not one dime.

My sister saw a show on the blues on TV. And old bluesman said that songs like this, which seem to criticize a woman, are really about the singer's boss, and it was common knowledge among the people who sang them. It was too dangerous to criticize the boss.

Son House said the blues was about bad love between men and women, and I guess he would know. I thought this song was about the weather!

That's what the thermometer on our porch read this morning when I got up walk the dog. Needless to say, once she had done her business I went back to bed.

Yeah, but is it 9 below Zero Fahrenheit or Centigrade?

And if it were Forty below it wouldn't matter!!

Well, the "official" low here last night was -6, and that is Fahrenheit (about -21 C. according to my trusty converter). The windchill was -20 F. (-29 C.) Cold no matter how you slice it!

Sonny Boy was operating under the Farenheit system. Nine below be's much colder thataway than Centigrade!

Before I ever heard the original, I had picked up this phrase from Dylan, for whom it was 9 below zero *at 3 o'clock in the afternoon"! Yikes!

Musta been tough growing up in Hibbing, MN, huh?
