English Folk Song - BBC Radio 3

Did anyone hear the concert of English Folk Song given by Vivien Ellis and Giles Lewin as Alva on BBC Radio 3 Early Music Show today? If not listen on

Radio 3

What a briliant concert! Normally when classically trained singers sing folk music it sounds forced to me but this was superb. And the accompaniment by Giles Lewin was sparse but fitted so well.

I have searched for a CD with this music on it but could not find one. Does anyone know of a CD with these songs by this duo?

They've got a couple of records on Beautiful Jo - see Alva for links to them.

I think Vivien also did a record with Tim Laycock and the Scorpion Band.

I should have addded that the second recording linked on that page - The Bells of Paradise - has some of the songs from today's programme.

Thanks for pointng that out, I would have missed a gem.

I thought I detected a faint trace of Bill Ellson in her singing of the street cry. He sings a version on the Voce of the People series.
