BS: You know you're almost famous when...

Mister and I played at a luncheon yesterday, and as we were talking to folks afterward, one lady said, "I remember you all from Cookeville." I couldn't remember being in Cookeville offhand, but I smiled and nodded anyhow.

Knowing that I could have been to Cookeville and simply forgotten (it's only a short drive from Nashville), I asked Mister if we had ever played there. He said no. I said, well, that nice lady seemed to think we had.

And he said... "Ha. We're like Elvis. People are seeing us in places where we aren't."

:-)

I was riding the IRT in New York when a lovely young lady approached me in that shy, hesitant manner that musicians often encounter. She had the look of someone about to ask for an autograph. I put on the humble, golly-gee expression and tried to look blase about the whole thing (first time for me). She said, "I saw your performance at the Gaslight, and I really liked you. Would you sign this for me, Mr Sky?"
Any of you sports guys remember what it's like to take one in the cherries?

My wife and I get a lot of misidentification on the art show circuit. I don't know how many times someone's said something like, "Oh! I remember seeing your pottery in Key West..." or Wichita or someplace else where we've never even been, much less exhibited.

Well, I guess it's understandable considering that everybody's pots have certain elements in common - they tend to be round, hard and colorful. And the number of old-hippie husband/wife teams on the show circuit is far from small.

But it is nice when someone actually does recognize our work from another show and comments on it. It's even nicer when they buy it.

Never had anything similar happen music-wise, though I have had people recognize me from bands that have been disbanded for years or even from one-time sit-ins that I had forgotten about.

I was seen in line at the Rolling Stones concert the last time they were in town. However, I wasn't anywhere in the area of the concert that night. Does that count?
Or how about if people keep telling me that I look like Toby McGuire?

Yeah that counts. But it's cheating if ya pay 'em to say that.

I'm nowere near being even almost famous. But Micca made me feel almost famous when I first met him at the FSGW Getaway (I think it was 3 Getaways ago).

When I told him I was CarolC, he said "THE CarolC!?!"

I've sold thousands of records over the years because people keep mistaking me for someone else----but they never will tell me who ! I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone.

To answer your question:
...when you realizehow gullible most folks are. ;-)

When you realize that the crowd of people sitting in front of you actually came to see the famous act on next, but they clap and smile at you anyway.

Being asked by a young female bank clerk who didn't know me from Adam but had heard the manager asking me about my next concerts;
"Excuse me, but are you a celebrity?"

Marshall Chapman was on a local writers' show last week talking about her new book. She told a story about sitting at a restaurant counter, when the man next to her said, "You're Marshall Chapman, aren't you?"

She said, "God, I hope so - I'm wearing her clothes."

Oh I dont know, back end of last May, just after the Welsh Assembly Elections. There is our newley elected Asembly Member Jeff Cuthbert, and myself and one or three of the other "Gophers" enjoying a victory pint or so.

Up comes this female - "Jeff I haven't seen you for ages, what are you doing now ???"

As Jeff said, he could put up with the publics disinterest, if it wansn't for you lot howling with laughter and rolling on the floor !!

Fair play he has a sence of humour.

In high school we were shown a recruiting film from a college. There I was, sitting in the classes in the Engineering School. Everyone in the room yelled that I was there! The college was in Memphis, the high school in Illinois.

Later, at a conference, an exhibitor asked me how things were going in Tennessee. At that time I'd never been to Tennessee!

Somewhere in Tennessee is either my doppelganger or my double -- or perhaps I've been leading A Secret Life.

I'm in the same boat. Sucks, don't it? Hope things are better soon. Sooner than soon would be nice, but soon would be good. Later, Benjamin.

PS We are rich in spirit, anyway.

Benjamin, Tobey McGuire is a pretty good look.
My own brother has had conversations with me at places I wasn't. Everyone knows me from somewhere. I think I know them, too--I used to speed print photographs all night and I've seen everyone, every kodak moment, and their naked girlfriends.
I feel sorry for a buck-toothed middle child in a family portrait I'm working on. Everyone else is a little hard to capture, but no matter what I do with this kid, they think it looks just like him. I could draw Bugs Bunny, they'd be happy. Poor kid. When my secret army of middle-children rules the world, I'll make him a general.

Well kendall,

looks like you are gonna have to visit that teacher,

which reminds me of the aprochypical SCA story about the child who told the teacher that her daddy was a King...

So the "King of the West" paid a surprise visit along with full retinue in costumes and crowns and knights in armour, etc to the school... :-)

So... I'm browsing through Chapters not all that long ago, when a sorta familliar face appears befor me and after a pause, that, "Hey! Yer that guy from *insert pub gig here* the other night...   Man... that was a good time... when's the next time yer back there?", sorta thing goes on...

While we're exchanging pleasantries and I'm digging for a business card to hand out, another dude walks past... pauses and returns, only this guy kinda looks familliar... a little shorter than me, a little broader, but with the same color hair and beard... It turns out -he- gets it all the time... the "Hey! Yer that guy from *insert pub gig here* the other night..." Only he has to reply "Ummm... nope... that's not me... ", and he just happend to be walking by when he heard dude #1 go off, and thought it was for him...

I told him he should learn to play and we could form a Duo called, "That's Not Me"

We were on holiday once on a walk and passed a couple of complete strangers when the man said to me out of the blue:"Are you Mr Barraclough?". Well I wasn't, but he just carried on with no explanation. I'm sure this was before the Porridge tv series and I'm not tall enough to be mistaken for that character played by Brian Wilde, though I do wear a flat 'at like his Foggy character. Ever since when we found footprints like the distinctive pattern of my walking boots we said: "Mr Barraclough has been past here".
One night in the club, both the editor of Blues in Britain, Fran Leslie, and visiting guitarist, Guy Tortora thought they'd met me before (they hadn't). Maybe the "face made for radio" is Zelig-like?

Genie and I were at the Museum of the Old City of Quebec. It was my birthday and there was background music... Genie says, "Oh, I know that song thats.... OH! THAT'S YOU!" Yup, they were playing my first CD, Nil Sasta Ach Amadain. I said to the young lady at the counter, "that's my band." She said, "Me too! (Tumb shot up...) That's my band too!" I said, "No, I am Lorcan Otway... that IS my band!" She called down the manager, who has a college radio station that plays my stuff, who told me the staff really likes my album... very nice birthday present, I was really really cuffed.
Cheers

On a trip to Glasgow I was approached in a shop by an exited old lady,
"It's YOU isn't it?"
"Er...well, yes, it IS me"
"Aye! I knew it was you as soon as I saw You!" and turning to her friends looking in the shop window, shouts loudly "I TOLD YOU IT WAS HIM!"
I was a little worried that she might want MY autograph as I wasn't too sure who "I" was, but she seemed pleased enough to have spotted me and left me there, none the wiser.

This wasn't exactly the way I'd have like to be recognized but I was at a Susan Tedeschi concert and I wondered around to the back and was standing up to the stage and a bouncer came up to me and said, "Shaky Legs, if you don't leave here I'll have to throw you out." I looked at him, say "How do you know who I am?" He says, "I know who you are, everybody knows you!" So then I went around to the front and some people at the front of the stage say to me, "Hey! We know you. Your the dancing woman!"
Ha! Recognized twice for two different things.(I don't know if that's good or not)
Peace, Rustic

C-flat, there was an editorial in the Nashville newspaper by a local doctor several years ago. He is quite well-known in town, but probably not so well outside of town. Anyhow he had gone to some fancy party, and worn a cowboy hat, just for fun. Someone asked him, "Are you somebody?"

And he answered, entirely honestly, "Why, yes, I am." ;-)
