I searched this, and found references, but no song. So, herewith, "The Village Pump" as I recall it from many Scout camps.

THE VILLAGE PUMP

There's a pretty little village far away.
Where they grow new potatoes, corn and hay
There's a pretty little rill,
By the side of a water wheel;
And the wheel it keeps a-turning all the day.
Now there's a lot of little houses in a lump.
And a pub they call "The Magpie On The Stump"
But the thing that you should see,
And the pride of you and me.
And the pride of all the village is the pump.

Chorus
The village pump,
The village pu-ump,
The village P.U.M.P. pump

Now the squire he was fond of lots of fun.
So when his eldest son was twenty-one
He gave a great big treat,
There were lots of things to eat,
And each kiddie had a halfpenny (pronounced "hay-pny") and a bun.
Now there were races where you hopped & skipped & jumped
And candy for each one, a great big lump.
But to celebrate the day,
In the proper sort of way.
He fitted a brand new handle on the pump!

Chorus
The village pump,
The village pu-ump,
The village P.U.M.P. pump

Now the funniest chap that I have ever seen,
Gave a temperance lecture on the green
He said "you folk down here
Are far too fond of beer"
And he spouted like a parish magazine.
Now he ran down "The Magpie On The Stump"
And gave us all a great big blooming hump.
He said "Water, that's for me"
So "right you are" said we
And we gave him plenty of it from the pump.

Chorus
The village pump,
The village pu-ump,
The village P.U.M.P. pump

See also the Kipper Family parody, which turns out already to be in the DT: The Village PIMP -though, for the usual impenetrable reasons, it has been re-named FALL DEE RAY by whoever posted it, and no one has bothered to credit the writers. No tune is provided either; but so far as I can remember it wasn't the same one anyway.

When I was down in Cornwall (over 30 years ago) they/we used to sing
'P.U.M.P. pump you buggers, pump.'
But then they used that word quite a lot there.

As sung by Tom Forrest at every Ambridge concert till he died.

And yet we never heard more than half a line of the chorus, Ian -- and usually not even that! I don't know if Bob Arnold (the actor whio played him) recorded it; he did make quite a few 78s of trad songs. Time they were reissued on a CD!

I thought that the song (or part of it) was written by Cyril Tawney. The Yetties recorded it years ago. To fit the tune which I know, you either have to sing the last line of the chorus as:

P-U-M-P, pump, pump, pump.
or (as Little Robyn said)
P-U-M-P, pump you buggers, pump.

There's also another verse about a policeman trying to arrest the pump.

Incidently, Little Robyn, in your comment about a certain word being used a lot, were you referring to "the old bugger" himself, the late, lamented, Mervin Vincent ? I think that Merv got the title for his exhortations to audiences to "Sing you Buggers, Sing" - it definitely used to work - the chorus singing used to be great !

Little Robyn, was it with the actions as well?

Verse addition :-

We got a new policeman t'other week
Most peculiar sort od fellow so to speak
He walked around his beat on a pair of size twelve feet
The locals thought he was a living freak
He was walking by the Maggie Pie and Stump
When he saw a most peculiar sort of hump
Just in case it should show fight He upon it shone his light
And found that he was talking to the pump

One more verse:

Now we got a new policeman t'other week
A sloppy sort of fellow so to speak
One that thought he was all there
But by gum I do declare
He was what you might have termed a living freak.
All the neighbours say as how he's off his chump.
T'other night he came across a biggish lump
He said, "Hold on, you're tight."
But when he shone his light,
Why the fathead he was talking to the pump.

[Chorus]
To the pump, the village pump
The village pump pump pump pump pump.
The village pump, the village pump
The village pump pump pump pump pump.

This is the Somerset version as I recall from camp fires when I was a lad. We weren't aware of the other verses above.

There's a pretty little village far away,
Where they grows new potatoes, corn and hay,
They've got a little mill,
And it stands beside the rill,
And the wheel it keeps a turning all the day.
There's a lot of little houses in a clump,
And a pub they calls The Magpie and the Stump,
But the thing that takes the cake,
And it keeps us all awake,
Is the squeaking of the handle of the pump.
The village pump, the village pump, the village P.U.M.P. pump

Now our old Squire, he likes a bit of fun,
And when his eldest son were twenty-one,
He give us all a treat,
There was nuts and things to eat,
And the children got a penny and a bun.
There were races for the young and old to run,
There were races where you hop and skip and jump,
But to celebrate the day in the proper sort of way,
He fitted a new handle on the pump.
The village pump, the village pump, the village P.U.M.P. pump

for 20 years we went to the village pump festival at farleigh hungerford near trowbridge. it was great, really - all our kids' summer holidays and much fun, excess and beer and music. it stopped a few years back - we had a boney m problem - but rumour has it there may be something happening again next summer. anyone got any ideas?
