Lyr Req: Time to Ring Some Changes (Thompson)

Somebody brought this song to my attention, and I see that the Digital Tradition version is really sloppy. Can somebody give us correct lyrics?

TIME TO RING SOME CHANGES
(Richard Thompson)

This old house is a tumbling down
The walls are gone but the roof is sound
The 3. deaf, he can never be found
It's time to ring some changes
They'll arrest your son if you just stand still
They'll ask you to pose with your hand in the till
They'll to die when you've written your will

It's time to ring some changes
It's time to ring some changes
It's time to ring some changes
It's time to ring some changes

You earn you're money for your daily bread
But The bread's gone up and you need more money
But the money's gone down better borrow instead
It's time to ring some changes
Now the politicians, they look so smug
They say tell the truth and then they give you a shrug
You might find the truth swept under the rug
It's time to ring some changes

Now listen here to a self made man
He says why can't you if I can
Can't you push buttons, can't you make plans
It's time to ring some changes
I'm going to tear this mansion down
Get my feet back on the ground
Penny for penny and pound for pound
It's time to ring some changes

For Richard Thompson songs, you need his official website: Beesweb

Specifically, the Song-o-Matic

...a useful wee search thing where you can look for song lyrics. Everything he's recorded seems to be there, but you'll not find things that didn't appear on anything official, like When I'm Prime Minister, unfortunately.

Time To Ring Some Changes

Written by Richard Thompson
Appears on Small Town Romance (1984)

This old house is a-tumbling down
The walls are gone but the roof is sound
The landlord's deaf, he can never be found
It's time to ring some changes

They'll arrest you son if you just stand still
They'll ask you to pose with your hand in the till
They'll ask you to die when you've written your will
It's time to ring some changes

It's time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes

O the politicians they look so smug
You say tell the truth and they give you a shrug
You might find the truth swept under the rug
It's time to ring some changes

You pay for your money for your daily bread
But the bread's gone up so you need more money
The money's gone down, better borrow instead
It's time to ring some changes

Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes

O you fall in love with the girl you've seen
Diamond studded on a tv screen
But the change in your pocket won't buy you a dream
It's time to ring some changes

So you steal a car and you go for a ride
You end up sleeping with some girl guide
And everything you do leaves you empty inside
It's time to ring some change

Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes

Time To Ring Some Changes (written by Richard Thompson) [as recorded by Richard Thompson on Hard Cash (various artists) (1990)]

I have found the Song-O-Matic very useful ever since RT finally opened his own Official website. There are various Thompson songs which people sing incorrect versions for, because - I presume - somebody has transcribed them incorrectly, and others have learned them from this intermediate source. (Okay - I know I've altered a couple of words when I sing Hard Luck Stories, but we do, to fit our own style of delivery, don't we).
There are TWO versions of Dimming of the Day in the Digitrad, DIMMING OF THE DAY and THE DINNING OF THE DAY (2) . Both these have the verses jumbled, and the words differ from RT's official words.
It would be worth cross-checking Digitrad versions of RT's stuff against this own web site.
Quack!
Geoff.

A lot of mis-heard or poorly revised stuff in the DT.

Lyr. Add: DIMMING OF THE DAY (Thompson)

This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in the river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day.

You pulled me like the moon pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side.

What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day.

Come the night you're only what I want
Come the night you could be my confidant.

I see you on the street in company
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me
I'm living for the night we steal away
I need you at the dimming of the day
I need you at the dimming of the day.

On one of Mary Black's cds. Poem above from the Song-o-matic.

I've learned it's not wise to copy lyrics from Mary Black CD's or CD booklets (click for an example). She could be the Mondegreen Queen. I can't think of anybody, except perhaps Steeleye Span, who mangles lyrics so badly. Good thing you got them from the orginal source, Q.

The Irish Descendants were just as bad, if not worse, for mangling lyrics too.
