Cheap Autoharp wanted

Hi Guys an Gals.
I know this is a bit cheeky, but I'm trying to find an autoharp, maybe on E-bay or something. Trouble is they are rare and too dear over here in the old UK, particularly up here in the Highlands of Scotand, so I've been looking on the US site. Now I can buy one, and pay for it with PayPal, so far so good, then I got to get it over the sea. Most sellers won't ship outside the US, and if they did, will they pack it OK, and what will it cost? So all you clever folks over there, how can I get one over here? No fitting an outboard isn't an option!
John

well i have been warned that shipping an instrument is safer than trusting it to the airlines luggage handling goons and gorrillas.
so maybe the Sorcha plan is not the best--though she would be the ultimate courier! If she could have it as a carry on that might work.

John, I bought one on ebay which I later sent to Night Owl. If we figure out the shipping costs you could have it shipped to me, then I could send it across to you. If you know the weight, we can calculate it and maybe do a trade out with each other. (Something Scottish - no haggis, though!**bg** My heart is in the Highlands, as well as some ancestral blood.:-)

Also, some US ebayers will ship internationally. And, if I ship through my husband's workplace, we may get a better deal. I'll have to check with him, first, though.

I have an Autoharp which is of no further use to me, probably badly in need of tuning, but still working the last time I tried it.
I live in the Greater Manchester area.
Perhaps we could do a deal of some sort.
Regards Brian Quinn

Sorry should be more specific. I'm looking for a 15 or 21 bar, preferably the latter, and would prefer an Oscar Schmidt with fine tuners. Many years ago I had a B&M Miranda, but apart from that most of the UK supplied ones are not as good.

For others about £180 from the Music Room (Cleckheaton, Oxford etc)or Hobgoblin both places have web sites thats for a 21 bar variety, which by ny reckoning is VERY cheap for an instrument

I'm in Australia. The top string on my autoharp has snapped. All the thin strings are blackened, but still tunable. The lower strings are apparently brass wound.

Any useful suggestions for replacement strings? Someone suggested piano wire or guitar strings. Any suggestions about gauges?

Robin

Elderly music in the US will supply a complete set of strings Robin, just put Elderly Music in Google or Web Wombat and it will transport you there.

If anyone else is looking - eBay isnt' a bad road to go.
I often list new special priced 15 and 21 chord Oscar Schmidt Autoharps on ebay. If you're interested check out listings under jafmusic_99. With a full selection at a nice discount at jafguitar.com
It's always nice to have the full Manufacturer's Warranty.

Shipping is the flat UPS rate.

Sorry, I can't help you out with the strings though.

I've got an Oscar Schmidt from the late 70s or early 80s in mint condition. Had it appraised here in California recently and I'll sell it for $300, and that includes shipping. It also has its original tuning fork and a vintage instruction booklet.

You need to post more information... 15 bar? 21 bar? Case? Color?
