For those who cannot wait for St Valentines day, the Welsh equivalent Saint (Saint Dwynwen) is celebrated on 25th January (also celebrated as 'Burns night')

St Dwynwen

That's a rather charming story.

That's most interesting - I'd never heard of her before. Thanks. And I love her "motto": "Nothing wins hearts like cheerfulness."

Wait a minute. That ain't the story I know!

In the version generally used the poor kid is jilted, raped, ravaged in general (by ex-fiance) and escapes/retreats to Llanddwyn Island off Anglesey to become, OF ALL THINGS, the Patron Saint of Lovers.

Go figure.

I suggest she be made the patron saint of women with February birthdays, since we almost never get valentines, even when we have significant others, which, at present, I don't. Maybe I'll ask St. Dwynwen.

While I think of it, may I applaud Tescos for actually putting up Santes Dwynwen decorations as well as St. Valentine's. OK - the commercial imperative of selling more chocies, et al. ... but Well Done nevertheless.
