Walking Eagle has requested permission to operate a "Where Are They Now?" PermaThread. I'm not quite sure what she's going to do with it or where she's going with it - but I'm sure it will be an interesting journey. It's all yours, Walking Eagle!
Many folk musicians who are currently performing can be found in another PermaThread, Folk Musician and Songwriter Links.

We've had a lot of requests on the 'cat lately wondering where folks and folksingers are. I thought it would be nice to have a Perma Thread where we can post our questions to and where we can give information on other's requests.

I'll start first. I'm wondering the whereabouts of Peggy Smith. I think she lived in western N.C. She only recorded one record that I know of. It would have been in the mid 70's - 80's. She played dulcimer on it and sang some of the songs in Cherokee. She sounds like she was a trained singer.Any help?

Walking Eagle, Don't know about Peggy Smith but here's a couple I've been wondering about. Casey Anderson - a black folksinger of the 70's. did some recording on Electra Records; Maxine Sellers, same time frame, did some recording on the Prestige Label.
I worked with both of them in those years but have lost track of them

I'm still wondering about Don Crawford...American guitarist/singer. Tall, thin coffee coloured black man, popular in the late 60's/early 70's. I met him at the Mossman guitar factory in Winfield, Kansas in about 1968 or 69. He was also on the Jepordy quiz show in the US once.

Jerry, if nothing else, Mark will be appearing at the Adams Avenue Festival, (aka, 31st Annual Roots Festival) in San Diego, California in May. It appears that he was there last year as well; but don't know if he is considered a "regular".

Walking Eagle, a quick search for ["Peggy Smith" Cherokee] on Google indicates that someone by that name has been extremely active in Cherokee and local (western N.C.) conservation activities. There was also someone by that name (unfortunately a common one) who ran a workshop at last year's Florida Folk Festival. Can't say if either is the same person you seek.

I hit nothing but dead ends on Maxine Sellers beyond a couple of references to recordings.

I would be interested to know whatever happened to Mike Pugh and David Boise. Pugh was the original baritone in the Chad Mitchell Trio, appearing on their debut album and their guest shot on "Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall" before leaving the group and being replaced by Joe Frazier. Boise actually replaced Joe Frazier at the end of the Trio's run, joining Mike Kobluk and John Denver on the Trio's final album. He later was part of the short-lived Denver, Boise and Johnson (that would be Michael Johnson, who's had quite a distinguished career since the 60s).

Where is Joan Crane?

I'm still looking for Joan Crane -- great guitarist & singer, does Adirondack folk, blues and rags.

She used to live in upstate New York, then moved to either Michigan or Indiana and we lost touch. I just found out (only late by half a year) that she performed at last year's (2003) Champlain Valley Folk Festival.

If anyone knows her e-mail or snail mail address, please PM me.

Wys,

Thanks for the additions. I have a few thoughts as well about PermaTHreads in general that I might take up the powers that be.

Folks, please include any information that you know about the performer, such as last known whereabouts, titles of albums they have out, and what type of music they played. You might want to put in their approximate age at the time you saw them. Pictures of them? Scan them and put in as a blue clickie.

No answers yet to my emails regarding Peggy.

The post about McClatchy just above offers an example of the many problems that need to be addressed, IMO, about how to best do a thread like this.

WHERE will the new information go, if there is already a thread about an individual, and HOW LONG will it remain timely? Imagine that problem compounded by all the vast numbers of "where" threads already going.

IS the "found" information still timely and relevant, so long after the question has been asked (not just McClatchy but all those many requests), or has someone already found the person and simply not come back here and told all of US about it?

IF we find someone (say on a given day in 20040 is that of any use to someone looking for the artist LATER, for instance to buy new recordings?

And, are we looking for what people should find for themselves via Google and other search engines, or are we looking for sightings and details by Mudcatters?

~Susan

Good questions, Susan. For instance, as best I can tell from examining the first few threads you listed:
Help: Where is Debbie McClatchy?
Janet Jones - Where did she go
Where IS Danny Spooner?
Where's Tommy Sands?
Where's Enda Kenny gone ?
Where's Whizz? (Wizz Jones)
Whereabouts of Bob and Melody Thomason
Glenn Yarbrough, where is he now?
Cory & McKelvey...where are they now?
Tom Taylor ? Did Woody---Where is he?
MARY O'HARA - where is she know?

what appears to be good information was given in response. Ostensibly, the cases were solved. But the person who posted the original question may not have ever indicated whether contact was actually accomplished (if that was the goal.)

It would seem a starting point would be to have a monitored thread not unlike the missing tunes thread in which, once the tune is reunited with the song, the entry is removed from the list. But in the missing persons threads, it is often impossible to know if the search is really over without input from the original poster.

Subject: RE: Where Are they Now? PermaThread
From: Allan C.

The most recent info I could find on John Baxter Browning Bryant unfortunately ends with his appearance on the Johnny Carson Show in 1970. He was originally from Greenville, South Carolina and later moved to Pickens, SC. He seems to have gained his initial recognition through association with Eddy Arnold and Johnny Cash, and appeared with them on the Kraft Music Hall. Browning's first hit was "Games That Grown-up Children Play" which appeared on the first of two albums on the Dot label. A subsequent hit was "Papa Says Dawn Holds Another Day"

I knew some of that early stuff about the "teenage singer" Browning Bryant .....
Wondering if he's the same Browning Bryant who wrote "Cure My Blues" (recorded by Ellen McIlwaine around 1980), and if so, did he write more gems, and is he still 'out there'.....

Norman Kennedy lives in Vermont, still weaving, still singing. Recently made a new CD from material recorded live in a concert in the UK. Dick Greenhaus, Mudcatter and master of Camsco Music, can get it for you. Norman's first recording, released as an LP by Folk-Legacy back in the 1960s, is now available as a CD. Check our web site.
The song referred to in the inquiry above is "MacPherson's Rant" --
"He took the fiddle intae baith o' his hands an' he brak' it o'er a stane. There's nae a hand shall play on ye, when I am deid an' gane.
The reprieve was comin' o're the Brig o' Banff, tae set Mac Pherson free, but they set the clock a quarter afore, and hanged him tae the tree."
Jeannie Robertson told me they were hanging him for sheep stealing, but they were mostly out to get him because he was "a traveller." She said, "He was a McFee, y'ken!"

Mary O'Hara

I attended her farewell concert in Galway so many years ago. She entered the Benedictine Order of nuns and after a few years found it was not her vocation. She later married a former priest and they live very happily doing educational work in former Rhodesia, Africa. Mary's sister is a well known actress in Dublin and plays a leading TV role in FAIR CITY (the Irsh equivalent of Coronation Street.

I wish success to all other queries.

Browning Bryant is still recording in the 21st century, though mostly for private distribution. He lives in Pickens Co., S.C. His last major label release was the album "Browning Bryant," in 1974, produced by the famed Allen Toussaint. It is an excellent album.

I know she is not unknown but here in the uk we never hear of Buffy Saint marie and I thought she was fabulous.
I have been told that she quit performing due to racist presssure and has become an artist and activist for native american rights.
Does she still record?
My mate Dick Appleton reckons she was a very good guitar player!
This is high praise indeed coming from him.

Does anyone know what happened to members of the duo Martin Carter and Graham Jones?

Graham played a fretless bass.

They did the folk clubs in the late 70s. This included Orpington when it was at a pub in Green Street Green. There were about 8 people in the audience and when they got up to play there were 6.
Then a guy in a brown anorak got up and left leaving 5! Martin dedicated a song to the 'man in the brown anorak'.

I guess with gigs like that, they gave up???

hildebrand here: i would like to catch up with Fred Weisz, a superb fiddler, veteran of the Even Dozen Jug Band and former student of Vassar Clements, that i used to jam with in boulder, 1968-69 -- we even tried forming a band for a while. i know he was with Goose Creek Symphony for a time, and has also played with the Greenbriar Boys, David Grisman, and others which i found on google. none of these contacts led to any current leads. can anybody help me get in touch with him? all the best, hildebrand

In the late 1960s & early 1970s, I remember Ruthie Gordon as a 19 year old with long brown hair. She played an acoustic guitar & sang at the opening of several Feminist Women's Health Clinics in the L.A. area. I was impressed because she knew even obscure songs from the Little Red Songbook of the Industrial Workers of the World (Wobblies).

re.: Don Crawford

I knew Don when we were both undergrads at Berkeley and he was singing at The Jabberwock. Been trying to locate him for the last 20 years or so. Did you get any replies to your WHERE ARE THEY NOW? inquiry?

I am currently hosting a show on CHRW in London Ontario. I played a track by Moe Ewart called Blues is Like Shoes. Beyond the one thread on this page and some other random facts on Google I can't ascertain much about him including where he came from and where he is now. If anyone could help me please do so.

I was on another site about Don and a woman said she was married to him for 12 yrs thru 93 and that he died in the early 2000's.
I ,too, have been thinking of him a couple of times over the last few yrs and am disappointed that he's not here with us anymore. I got a little bit acquainted with him in Montana in late 72.
was also a Richie havens fan whom I also spoke with more than once and so sad to have him go......both huge losses!
I assume you're talking about Don Crawford here. -Joe Offer, Mudcat Music Editor-
