Laddie Lie Near Me

The two recent threads re Celtic & Irish songs got me thinking about the lovely song, "Laddie, Lie Near Me" from the "Heart of the Celts" album. Does anyone have any background about this beautiful tune? I'm also looking for music and/or a recording for a baritone harmony part to accompany the sorprano lead in "Laddie.."

It that the same tune as "Lady, lie near me", B269 on my website. It was also sometimes called "Laddy, lie near me".

Thanks for the quick response Bruce O. However, I can't answer your question. I'm a new guy to DTDG & I don't know anything about your website. Please enlighten me. I would not be surprised if "Lady", "Laddy", and "Laddie" have evolved over time, gender, and locale as part of the folk process.

Bruce's site is well worth a visit. We do have the tune in the database, though.

The tune on my website is not the 18th century Scots one called "Laddie lie near me", which, among other places, is in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #218.

Click here to get to Bruce's Website, http://www.erols.com/olsonw/
Note, however, that the original request was for a baritone harmony for the song, not the lyrics or the tune. There are two versions of the song in the database.

There was also a request for information about the tune. The oldest known copy of it is that listed in CPC12, "Laddie lay near me", in the Scots Tunes index on my website.

"Laddie lie near me 2" in DT is close to the 'Old Words' version of the song in Scots Musical Museum, #218, but there it's 'Lassie lie near me".

Something has me tossed here. The two versions of Laddie Lie Near me (One attributed to Burns) appear to have quite different structures, yet share a common tune. I don't know whether Prof. Julius Summer had notoriety beyond Australia in 60's, but to quote him, "Why is it so?".
I am using the off-line (DOS) version of the DT, as the Web version takes a long time at the moment. Regards
