He's doing the same now for another artist, whose name temporarily escapes me (possibly Katie Melua) and this morning he credited his assistant Paul Walters for introducing him to both her and Eva. Log on to the Radio 2 website http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wogan/ and have a look. Better still, ask him to play Kate Rusby again! He has been known to play 'Show of Hands' as well. He does rather take the mickey but sometimes he's deadly serious. For Wogan to say something is quite nice, means it stands a fair chance of getting played again! I think part of the problems is the inverted snobbery that surrounds the folk world. Some performers want to keep music live, but need to sell CDs to survive. They won't send free CDs to radio stations because they want the income, but they won't get the income unless people know who they are. A radio station will reach thousands of people at one time, rather than the few hundreds (and frequently the same few hundreds) that go to festivals or clubs. See the circular nature of the problem? Lambasted in a recent thread for an appearance on 'Hogmanay Live' which was technologically out of her control, now lambasted again by some for being pretty and having the brass neck to be played by Wogan! Count me wi' them above who are on her side. She's a great ambassador for folk and an encouragement to other young people to get involved, she's talented, she has a wonderful personality and yes, dammit, she's GORGEOUS! I may have inadvertently mislead you when I said "big feature" the bulk of it was a photograph. It may be that it takes a while to get the stuff archived. All it said was that "Underneath the Stars" had been put on this week's Radio 2 playlist. I am not sure how things get chosen Some people employ song pluggers. (I believe Jim Moray did for example). As it was the first time I had heard her, I found many of the comments which to you would have seemed negative as being constructive. If she had only recieved priase for that performance, I would have simply decided she is not to my tastes. As it turned out, I now know she tends to be better when she can work with people and that my hearing was a below par performance. The end result of that thread for me is that I am actualy more, not less, inclined to give her another listen sometime. I think you took Giok out of context. I'd agree with him that in the more commercial world that sadly good looks do tend to be an advantage. I think that one good thing we have in the folk world is that although we may appreciate a person's beauty (or at least from my viewpoint - there are people out there I fancy!), I believe we do try to judge our enjoyment of music with our ears, not our eyes and are less subjected to the marketing forces and what they consider will help in promotion. Back more on topic... I would echo Eliza C in "Good on her. Hope it does her well". I'd doubt than any poster to this thread feels otherwise. Jon |

I'm nervous too that we may be seeing something of this strange British phenomenon where we worship unknowns, turn them into stars and then kick seven bells out of them until they're back where they started - admittedly it's not something you see in the folk world, but then you don't see that many folk artistes truly hitting the Big-Time! Again, sorry guys if I got unnecessarily stroppy. I'll read more carefully in future! Bob Harris still does a cracking job on his general Saturday show as well as the country show. Just think what life would be like without Harris & Kershaw!
