01 Feb 04 - 12:35 PM (#1106592) Subject: Lyr Add: FOUR COUNTRY ROADS From: Sorcha Four country roads, winding to a town in County Galway Four country roads, leading to the friends I left behind Four dusty roads, winding to the town of Glenamaddy Four dusty roads, forever in the caverns of my mind Once in a while I hear the sound of music in the winter night I see now and then The trees where we sheltered from the rain And once in a while I see us walking home in the morning light And oft are the times I long to see my home town once again Four roads to Glenamaddy Four roads that drift apart Four roads to Glenamaddy Are the four dusty byways to my heart One country road Led me to the schoolhouse by the meadow And one country road To the churchyard where my Mum and Daddy lie One dusty road Where I strolled with a loved one in the shadows And one dusty road That led me on my journey far away Chorus - 2nd verse - Chorus X 2 & ends The four country highways to my heart. http://irishlyrics.homestead.com/files/four_county_roads.txt And, this from Mudcat: Subject: RE: SONG ADD : The Campsite At Drumcree From: GUEST,Big Tom - PM Date: 31 Jan 02 - 07:09 AM Wheeeeze .... Wheeeeeze ... Good on you for tryin', Philomena ... but you'll find it a hard market to break into. I re-recorded "Four Country Roads to Glenamaddy" as "Four Country Roads To Oul' Garvaghy (And We're Not Allowed To Walk Them)". Didn't sell damn all! G'luck anyway! (No clue how much of it Big Tom changed) Your oul' friend Tom. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=43154#639247 |
02 Feb 04 - 12:01 AM (#1106986) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four country roads Big Tom song From: GUEST 4 Country Roads..what an awful song....performed by a man who cant sing a note..and opened the door for the equally atrocious Brendan Shine.. While it was open..and for too long ...in my opinion, Daniel O'Donnel slipped through to wow us with his bland vocals..as if things couldn't get any worse!!! His sister , Margo , was always better value. Usually pissed and might fall off the stage, if you were really lucky. She couldn't sing either. I'm with holding my name tonight cos otherwise I'll be receiving hate mail from fans of the above...lol The names above make me ashamed to be Irish...far better singers came, with some soul..ie Bono, Mary Black, Dar Williams. It's only the ex pats that keep these dinosaurs going..apart from Daniel, who has achieved 'Cliff' status. Perhaps they might do a duet at Wimbledon this year...lol Guest x |
02 Feb 04 - 08:34 AM (#1107182) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four country roads Big Tom song From: GUEST,mick I think it's a nice song and I like the way Big Tom sings it .Didn't Bono do a tribute to Big Tom a few years back? It's not just the ex pats who keep acts like Big Tom and D O'D going - they'd both pack venues here in Ireland .I'm no fan myself guest - I find DOD's material particularly schmaltzy - but he does have an impeccable sense of timing doesn't he and he never misses a note. And sometimes even Daniel gets to sing a good song . I heard an Irish country band in a pub in London about twenty years ago singing a beautiful song called Donegal Shore . It turned out to be a Daniel O'Donnel song. Does anyone know it? |
02 Feb 04 - 08:52 AM (#1107204) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four country roads Big Tom song From: DonMeixner Hi Guest ( Which one I don't know, It is a large usually dull witted family) Four Country Roads is song we do in The Flyin' Column and I admit to liking the song. The rest of your comment I can't agree more with. Las Vegas Irish acts are the worse of musical white bread. But don't you think calling Daniel O'Donnel, (The Pat Boone of the Emerald Isle), bland only lessens the value of a perfectly good adjective? I am not afraid to post my own name. Don Meixner |
03 Feb 04 - 08:40 AM (#1108093) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four country roads Big Tom song From: Essex Girl For many years my Irish friends took me round the Irish pubs and dancehalls of London. My friends favourite band was Big Tom so I saw him quite a few times. Although all of the songs might not be brilliant the music were great for dancing and the atmosphere was great. Big bands are still popular with the Irish both in Ireland and England - and I presume the US.After all outside folk dance clubs and festivals where can you go to a ceilidh? How long has Big Tom been going anyway? He must be in his 70's by now. |

13 Mar 09 - 10:34 AM (#2587968) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four Country Roads (from Big Tom) From: GUEST Interestingly Des Bishop a(asa sort of outsider) says Big Tom is a great country singer. Not a fan of Country'n'Irish but having got into American country music more I can see the appeal. Better than U2 for sure - they are reasonably talented (certainly better than me) but totally overrated |

30 Oct 15 - 06:41 AM (#3747455) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Four Country Roads (from Big Tom) From: GUEST who wrote four roads to glenamaddy? nice to hear big tom sing about a lovely rural irish area...in a way, glenamaddy stands for rural Ireland...big tom`s stomping ground. lovely to hear a local song...country songs are often about far off places..the bayou, phoenix, usa etc. four roads has a plaintive quality...the emigrants tale, so common in traditional irish music. |
