Made it home safely, 'though it was a bit of an expedition what with the enormous downpour... Had to stop in Portlaoise for a while, as the windscreenwipers couldn't cope with the rain anymore.

Anyway, I had a good weekend! Thanks for organizing, Fibula.
And thanks to everyone for the good craic.
I'd certainly like to see Portaferry again in Summer, with better weather.

Yes, Eric, it was really nice!
It actually stopped raining for 10 minutes on Sunday morning so that Sandy and I could go on a short walk - brill!
We had several really nice sessions in front of some really nice open fires in some really nice pubs which served some really nice Guinness!
Even got a really nice pint of real ale at Daft Eddie's, which is across the other side of Strangford Lough.
Enjoyed the Mountains of Mourne - well at least I think I would have done if I could have seen them in the rain!
Enjoyed the traditional Irish fiddle playing of Diane Boullier (spelling?) and her husband who joined us on Saturday night.
Got a little nervous when Micca started singing a certain parady on the Sunday lunchtime - "if I hear it one more time ..."!
Enjoyed hearing Kats play her violin late one night. Please may we hear it again soon?
Enjoyed some other beautiful singing and music from many other Mudcatters and meeting everyone again.
Very many thanks for organising it, Fibula. Roll on next year!

HEADLINES.....

Has Robert (Raven) found his pint???!!!!

Just got back. Had a wonderful weekend. Thank you so much Fibs for organising it...even though you jumped ship to see Planxty...but hey if I could of got tickets I would have gone too!!

Yes Alan I will play again for you sometime!

Had a bit of an arguement with Easyjet on the way back....they only have 2 disabled seats on the plane and people were already sitting in them...one of which was NOT disabled....anyway it got sorted and I got home ok!

We left icey London on Friday and landed in a very wet Belfast and it pretty much rained all weekend with a couple of hours of non-rain time so we could see the view accross the Lough.

Will post more later....with some photos hopefully...and Eric...we saw the perfect T shirt for you at the airport but I drank all my pennies so I couldn't send it too you!...maybe next time!

Home to Darkest Hayes at five to six tonight absolutely bloody knackered. I would probably have enjoyed the weekend a bit more if
I hadnt suffered a severe bout of C R S which seemed to be somewhat infectious on Saturday evening.
The delightful Miss Fibula Mattocks deserves ALL our thanks with a side thank you to Frankk and Lily and the other residents of the fair
hamlet of Portaferry.
Nine last year, twenty three this year ( I think) so next year we are going to have to have two or three sessions at a time, with groups of singers and musicians playing Musical Sessions in rotation.

Thanks to our great organizer Fibuöla!
And thanks to aöll the participants!

It was a realply great weekend!

I made it (more or pless) safeöly home - as Micca, Leadfingers and catsPHiddle already know I made a sölip outside Belfast Airpolrt and temporarily put all my weight on my righthand ringfinger. It is now a bit swollen and hurts like hell when either straightened or bend to far - I put a diy-splint to it so I can't bend/straighten it - but that should expöölain my John-from-Huöll9-style typing...

So my (temporarily adopted) Mudcat name now is

MudGuard from Munich8

;-)

Going to bed, more (incöl. pictures) tomorrow/wednesday...

Home safe & tired. What a wonderful weekend with so many good memories.

So many piccies from so many digi cameras! I did make the suggestion that we each put our piccies on a Yahoo (or suchlike) photo page & include a link in the thread. Continuing that thought I wondered if we could then let Pene (Jeff) have all the Yahoo links so that he can pick & choose the ones for the Events page. There are going to be so many good ones we could really clog up the Cat if we all put them up!!!!

So sorry about your sore finger MudGuard!

Hope everyone is home safe....

We arrived, we had a beer or two, we sang a song or two, we played a tune or two, and we went home. And it rained, but NOT in the Guiness.
What more do you need to know ? Come along next year and you can be just as bored and fed up as we were (NOT).I managed to forget to take my camera so I have no piccies at all, I had a problem with my Mini Disc so I have no musical memories, and I had a severe case of tiredness and Guiness induced brain fade so I was busy forgetting the word AND the chords of songs I have been singing for years. But it sure as Hell didnt matter at all.

Thanks chaps for the speedy photographs, and congrats Andy for getting some outdoor photos in the 30 seconds between the end of the first shower (which lasted 3days) and the second shower (which lasted 2days).

The local weather forecast had actually predicted showers, so that was ok then!

We enjoyed (a fair bit of) the excellent Guinness and the hospitality of the local pubs- and the Saltwater Brig just up the road does the most mouthwatering Portavogie Scampi....

We could have done without the uninvited residents in the bedroom though :-/

Lovely to see everybody. We'll be back!

'Tis all the little things in life that get stuck in my happy synapses, and I apologise now that I'm basking in the glow of Laphroaig, after a few at a lovely music and talking session at the Six Bells.

The first is companionship, and as we were necessarily thrown together for six hours in a car, the wonderful company of Kate who is Katherine, Fibs who is Kate, and that gobshoite Viking guitarist of mine whom I love to bits made my weekend. I'm sorry we buggered up the group dynamic by sodding off to Dublin to see Planxty, but it had the same feel as witnessing Led Zep in '79. It was, quite simply, the best concert I have ever been to. True magic was abroad in Vicar Street.

Secondly, it was the companionship of Barholm. We have given a lot of people a good laugh by admitting we're off to meet people we found on the electric internet, but over the last three years, we have fallen into an easy being-with-eachother that I desperately hope outlives the Eurogathering round my gaff in May. You are all special people in your myriad idiosyncratic ways, and our bandwidth is so broad because of it.

Cuddling the ladies, and in farewell, the chaps was special too, and I will thank Mooman for showing me it was OK to hug a blurk. You were missed, Richard, and it was oft commented. I think I'd better stop, as this is a sauce-laden rant, even with its dearth of 9s, so I will retreat by asking Kate who is Fibs to do it all again next year, although I can't promise Christy, Donal, Andy and Liam will make it again!

Skippy, I've never had any trouble hugging blurks (except Mudguard, but we worked out that if I stand on a box.....) so I shall collect mine from you when I see you next.

It's Ireland. Of course it's going to rain. That's why sessions were invented, to kill time between showers. Some sessions can last for days!

Next year, I will persuade Manitas and we shall be there!

Hi everyone I finnaly got my Mudcat name so I shall have to get a badge of Tigg and the badger and a t-shirt. My official Mudcat name is now White Tiger! I choose it because they're my favorite animal and theres only 210 left (211 counting me!) But why would you want to know that!!! I Andy (MugGuard) has 2 of my tunes on his list and some other good ones which I shall have to learn. Maybe Cat (catPHiddle) could tell me the bowing for Fanny Power. Can't believe it's been a week already.

John, I was thinking about asking you for a shorter version - your name made the "New messages since last visits" almost unreadable, because the first column got very wide...
So thanks for that change (even if I did NOT ask you for it...)

I just looked up the word "fanny" in a dictionary - and I am not sure any longer whether I really should learn that tune...

I wouldn't recommend learning the song 'The Limerick Rake' in that case, MudGuard, for such reasons as you outline above:

"If I chance for to go to the market of Croom
With me cock in me hand, and me pipes in full tune.
I am welcomed at once and brought up to a room,
Where Bacchus is sportin' with Venus...."

Some of them you do have to do with a straight face.....

"Fanny" when used as a name (as it is in the tune's title) is the short form of Stephanie , in a similar way to "Willy" is a short form of William and "Cat" or "Kate" may be used as the short form of Catherine, Katherine or Catrina.

After 3 Eurogatherings and a Loughstock, I've plucked up the courage to go to the Cork Singers' Club yesterday night.
And they didn't eat me alive!
Next step: unpacking fiddle at a session (have already smuggled my fiddle in once, but was so intimidated that I left it in its case, hidden safely under a bar stool).

Phew! :-)

I did sing, MudGuard! I happened to sit down right next to the organiser, who noticed me, introduced himself and said he'd give me a turn, so I couldn't really say no :-)
They were all very welcoming and friendly. And it was after dinner, in the pub (Spailpin Fanac). There is usually one special guest, who sings a bit more than the rest, who take turns. The guest was Mandy Murphy, whom I hadn't heard of, but she had a very good voice. She made me a compliment afterwards, which was nice.

It was a good night, with many styles of singing and songs. I was surprised to hear people actually speak (and sing!) Irish, which doesn't happen a lot in Cork City.

No, I would not even think of using a yellow and white toothbrush...

On Saturday morning, when I noticed the absence of toothpaste I thought I had left it at home - it never occurred to me that I had used it in Hotel Draper (must be some strange side effect of the Friday evening session...)

Btw, Liz, note the capital G in MudGuard ;-)

happy [belate-ed] birthday white tiger ^_^
i'm sure you'll all be happy to know that beside the baran[sp?] that is still being tinkered with, i've just started to learn the ocarina too...

so by next year i should be able to amaze and astound people with two of the most annoying instraments in the folk circuit ;)
and who knows may even have learnt a new song hehee ;)

letty i'm sure you'd do well in your local folk club, you have a good voice and fiddle skills ... go and put them to good use :p

hopefully next year's Loughstock everyone is going to stay put so we can have some good monster sessions ^_^
this years was great, but that said the music and singing wasn't really AS good as the previous years. but that might be cause this time we all only went back to the hostel and did a sing around once rather than each nite. I think that bit of last year was the best part cause it got almost everyone involved.

just think it's been 2weeks already, time sure flys quicker these days :(

another belated birthday best to White Tiger; your mum's birthday is the same as my dad's

I missed the great line-up at Gainsborough; I went to Scotland for mid-term break instead. The weather's great and I'm doing a lot of walking. Someone called my name, I looked and it was Clayton whom I'd met at Portaferry last year, an Australian teaching in England. He hadn't know anything about Mudcat, just happened to be at the Barholm hostel on the right day. Castar na daoine ....

A very belated message to all of you who went to Portaferry- I've been locked away doing a mad three week course up in Newcastle and so haven't been able to write sooner. It's involved a complete brain load / overload of information and a liver load of alcohol - as if that was needed after the Ireland gathering!

Had a really fantastic time on the Emerald Isle. Loved meeting/seeing you all. I've just been looking through the pictures and they brought back lovely memories. Fantastic music and company. Really have to start learning that mandolin properly - so much inspiration - I really hope that next years gathering I'll be able to keep up with the tunes. But in the short term I'll do my best to get a vague understanding of how to play it before Eurogathering (miracles can happen!?). Big thanks to Greg and Eric for helping me get to Ireland and to 'that Plaxty gig' (wow) and massive thanks to Fibbs for organising such a wonderful gathering.

Kate x

you want to be cranking out some good mandolin playing in a matter of 2months all that Uni style cramming should come in useful for something other than giving you a reason to relax in the pub ;)

not that it matters much how good you are; peeps are usually willing to teach you the basics or cords to something so you can know a few songs to jam out and practise. once ya get them down usually you get used to the notes and can tinker til you can play along, atleast when i used to play that's how i tended to learn.

hopefully next year there will be more of us youngsters who can join in a little more rather than being wallflowers :D
