However, they were both tough old men who brought a lot of optimism and cheer to their fans. Stokoe memorably won the FA Cup with an unfancied Sunderland side. Although Ally McLeod's 1978 World Cup has gone down as a disaster, the team really was weighed down with unrealistic expectations. Their final game, a thrilling win over the best team in the tournament (Holland) will never be forgotten by anyone who saw it. Farewell to two fine old men. |

He was a superb manager at Ayr and his time as manager of the Scottish team in the late 1970's was the stuff of legend. okay..I know we didn't win the world cup but he was so inspiring that we really thought we could. In the Borders we play rugby and in the Highlands we play shinty. In the central belt people play football in order to wallow in their religious bigotry. The clubs not involved in this have few fans willing to pay for a ticket and the stadiums are half empty at best. |

I do tho hate the expression "the beautiful game" - speaking with all the authority of an an ex-Junior!. It's no more "beautiful" than any other game: that was a term dreamt up by Pele, the most oevrrated player in history. I've seen better players playing for Duntocher Hibs - Archie Wilson and wee Johnny McHugh, for example. |
