Anyone got these Washboard Sam lyrics printable already? If not I'll transcribe from CD (& share for the DT).

Jaspar's Gal
(Leroy Batchelor)
recording of 1940-1941
from The Bluebird Recordings 1940-1941 (RCA 66720), copyright notice

(Spoken:
Memphis Slim: Say, look-a-her man, do you know Jaspar's got a new gal in town?
Man replies: Sho' nuf man?
Memphis Slim: Yeah man!
Other man: Well, tell me about her)

Now he's got a girl, she's shaped like a hog
Her voice reminds me of an old bull dog
Her hair looks just like, a chinchilla coat
You get close up on her, she smells just like a goat

You know she's smellin'
Got b.o.1 all the time
And she thinks soap and water
Is a doggone crime

Now her ears are so long, her nose is flat
Her head's so big she can't wear no hat
Now her jaws are swollen and she's got one eye
She looks like a wreck that happened, last July

She's a ugly
Got b.o. all the time
And she thinks soap and water
Is a doggone crime

Now she must-a been her mother, only child
She should be a gorilla because she sure is wild
Got ways like a monkey, and sly as a fox
She should be in a chain gang, breakin' up rocks

Because she's ugly
Got b.o. all the time
And she thinks soap and water
Is a doggone crime

Now she got legs like a needle
She ain't got no chin
She's a beautiful woman for the shape she's in
Her feet look like swings way out on a limb
That's why her mother put her off on him

Because she bo-gish
She's got b.o. all the time
And she thinks soap and water
Is a doggone crime

__________
Note 1: b.o., body odor.

With minor changes, that's reasonably close to the Washboard Sam version I have. Sam has her shaped like a 'frog' though in the first line. Is this a complementary song to the 'Darn Good Girl For the Shape's She's In' in the white tradition? The attribution on the Washboard Sam is to him (Robert Brown).

Thanks, guys, Washboard Sam version follows:

SOAP AND WATER BLUES
(Robert Brown, "Washboard Sam")

1. Now I've got a gal, shaped like a frog.
Her voice remind me of an old bulldog.
Her hair looks just like a chinchilli coat,
And, man, if you get close up to that woman, she smells like a goat.

CHORUS: She got B.O.
She keeps B.O. all the time.
And she thinks soap and water,
Ooh, Lord, Lord, is a doggone crime.

2. Her ears are so long, her nose is so flat,
Her head is so big, she can't even wear a hat.
Her dogs (legs) is bowed, and she got one eye.
Man, she look like a wreck that happened last July.

CHORUS: Man, ain't she ugly?
She got B.O. all the time.
Man, that woman thinks soap and water,
Man, is a doggone crime.

3. She must to have been her mother's only child.
She should have been a gorilla, 'cause she sure is wild.
She got ways like a monkey, sly as a fox.
She should have been on some chain gang, man, breaking up rocks.

CHORUS: Man, ain't she ugly?
And she keeps B.O. all the time.
Man, that woman thinks soap and water,
Ooh, Lord, Lord, is a doggone crime.

4. Her legs look like needles and she ain't got no chin.
She's a beautiful woman – for the shape she's in.
Her feets look like wings, way out on a limb.
That's just why her mother put her off on him.

CHORUS: Man, ain't she ugly?
And she keeps B.O. all the time.
Man, she thinks soap and water,
Hoo, Lord, Lord, is a doggone crime.

Some lines worthy of Les Dawson (or Les Barker): "A beautiful woman for the shape she's in" "Looks like a wreck that happened last July".

This is something I'd love to play! Gotta find a copy to listen to. We used to do one called "Takes Soap and Water To Keep It Clean". We altered the lyrics some and that made it all the more fun.

Went down to the river, and tried to git across
Jumped up on your girl friend, cuz she looked just like a horse
Roll her over, give her Coca Cola, a dish of ice cream, lemon soda
Takes soap and water, to keep it clean

So glad I finally found the complete lyrics to this song, I only had part of it. I haven't heard it in years. Always brings to mind a guy who's appearance gave me the urge to turn the pressure hose on him and introduce him to a bar of Lifebuoy.

Big thanks
