I've just received an E Mail from Tonys daughter Laura, regarding a project to create a retrospective CD of Tonys life.
So, chaps....anybody got any live recordings of Mr Rose in their attics??
My breath is bated

I've alerted the usual suspects (wake up Kevin Sheils!) to sort through their junk...could take some time.

This is wonderful news. Tony Rose's glorious voice should be available everywhere. I'm so looking forward to the results.

Tony sang with Pete and Chris Coe and Nic Jones in that great band Bandogs, Pete would be a good contact, he's on line at either Ryburn Three Step or Redshift Records, [ I think ]

I have a tape of Tony singing at the Triangle Folk Club, Edinburgh, sometime in the early '70s - I'll look it out. Quality of recording is no doubt poor, but the quality of the performance will surely shine through. You're welcome to use anything on it that you like. PM me with the address you'd like it sent to.

Unfortunately Countess I was never a collector of tapes of club nights although I was at many of Tony's gigs when he lived in London.

Now I wonder if Bill Leader has any outtakes of the sessions for his albums that were not part of the deal that saw them going eventually to CM.

Probably not, and could possibly cause problems anyway, but may be worth exploring if anyone has contact with Bill. I lost touch with him when he moved from round the corner to me in London.

OK, back to what I said above....chez Pete Coe seems a good place to start asking since he was there at the time Leader was wound up.

Good luck - I will look forward to it. Unfortunatly, when I saw Tony at Pontardawe many years ago (early 1970's), I didn't record him, but I greatly enjoyed the evening.

I've found the tape, and it's remarkably good quality, seeing it dates from 1973 or thereabouts. The songs are as follows: -

Poor Man's Labours
Just as the Tide was Flowing
The Famous Farmer (Bruton Town)
The Crafty Maid's Policy
Silbury Hill
Thornaby Woods
The Pensioner's Complaint
Sheath and Knife
Limbo
The Bellringing

plus Tony's introductions and chat between songs. I know some of these are on his recordings, but I'll happily copy the tape for this project. Where do I send it?

As well as the reasonable quality recordings I mentioned in the previous post, i have some rough cassette live club recordings, of Tony singing Shoals of Herring, Kelly the Boy from Killane, The Seeds of Love, and Come all ye Tramps and Hawkers. Probably from 1964. I also have a splendidly atrocious tape of the Chastity Belt, with verses contributed by Tony Rose, and also Mudcat's very own McGrath from Harlow and Mike of Northumbria, in their green and salad days.
PM me if you are interested,Laura.

I've also got an absolutely deadful recording that I did at Adrian House in Liverpool in 1974 when I was at college. I'll send them both on & see if they are any use.

Apologies for taking so long before joining this thread. I'm not a Mudcat regular (don't tell me: I know I should be) but Kitty told me this was going on, so I should have put my three ha'p'orth in sooner.

I have recordings from Reading University Folk Club in 1969 and from Herga in 1973, 1976 and 1978. These were all recorded on my Uher and should mostly be of fair or better quality, but I won't know until I play them. I also have one song copied from one of Edgar Ashton's recordings at Edinburgh University Folk Soc, date unknown, probably also around 1969.

I have recently treated myself to a decent 24-bit sound card and a Revox, so I should be able to transfer any or all of these recordings into digital format with negligible loss of quality from whatever quality the original tapes can offer.

Long term I intend to digitise ALL my recordings, if I'm spared, but I make no promise as to how much I can deal with how soon, and I've also promised to digitise my miscellaneous recordings from the Goat in St Albans, for the Tony Barratt project. Therefore please let me know if there's any of the following recordings of Tony Rose that you particularly want or definitely don't want. (Some of these may be better known by alternative titles, but they should be recognisable.)

The Deserter from Kent
Six Months Hard Labour
Matt Highland
Five Foot Flirt
Blackwater Side
Compliments Returned
Oh Sir Oh, No Sir No
Baron of Brakley
Tavistock Goosey Fair
Widdiecombe Fair

Fatal Curse of Drink
Silbury Hill
Yarmouth Town
Plains of Waterloo
The Parson & the Clerk
Thirty Foot Trailer
The Piddletrenthide Jug Band
Just As the Tide was Flowing
George Collins
The Pensioner's Lament
The Bay of Biscay
The Bonny Hind

But we would like to send as much as possible off to see what is good enough quality to be used, and then pick our final selection from that. So we wondered how much of the list would you be able to let us have?

He used to do that one

In Thorneymoor wood in Nottinghamshire
right falerum wack folarity
Three houses stood at three square

sorry I've forgotten it, but he used to have this really smooth DADGAD style accompaniment - something like Martin Simpson has on Creeping Jane nowadays. quite unique at the time when most people played DADGAD, with a sort of deranged rumpety bump rhythm -
does anybody else remember, or is my memory playing tricks on me.

I first saw Tony when he was a very young teacher. I think he'd been at Lukes and he came back to the area and did a spot at the folk club in Exmouth, one night when The Journeymen were doing the gig. I think he was playing an old Levin and he did Tavistock Goosey Fair.

Then I saw him a few times round Exeter in the 70's when I started singing myself, and then at Cambridge. after that the trad /contemporary war hotted up and a Dylan/ McTell influenced singer like myself was pretty much persona non grata in the kind of clubs Tony got booked.

Tony was a wonderful singer, a fine good humoured man and a good accompanist. I wish you well with your project.

The song is normally called Thornymoor Woods, there was a thread on it last year giving several versions of the words, but I don't know how to do a clicky to a thread yet. Tony's version was called Thornaby Woods, and is on the tape I sent Laura earlier. Great version, though not being a guitarist I can't comment on the technique. It certainly fits the song brilliantly.

I thought somebody would know about it, even though I couldn't see it in the list. I think at one time at least, he would have listed it as one of big achievements. A big song.

As I remember there is one version in AL Lloyd 's folksong in england, and it also featured in Folksongs of the midlands (Roy --------) sorry I've forgotten

Laura,

I only just came across this thread, sadly I am probably too late to
contribute much to any compilation, except a few tracks from a Fylde club session (1983) left for me by a friend.

However, this note as well as being a "please tell me how its going"
is a plea for a copy of the only LP of Tony Rose that I do NOT have
"Young Hunting" I have copies of Banks of Green Willows, Greenwood tree, Poor Fellows, and Bandoggs, of course his one & only CD " Bones"

But Young Hunting eludes me. Anything appreciated, Analogue tape, digital tape (DAT) CD, in audio or MP3 format, anything to complete the sound colection, if not the black vinyl.

Thanks..

VW.

Hi,

Firstly - you're not yet too late! If you have anything to contribute it is still greatly apprectaited - we are still listning through everything!

Unfortunately - the actual records are owned by Dave Bulmer (no immediate comment on this character... cough) so we can't release them as CD, however... I shall PM you...

If you'd like an address to send stuff to I'll either pm you (if you are planning to become a member) or it was in a copy of Froots a few months ago.

News has it (if you did not find out already) that There is a FIRST
official release from Bulmer & Co of a Tony Rose CD, the Greenwood tree, due out TODAY 15 Nov 2004    is this going to see a flood of

Guilt? I also doubt it, more like seizing an opportunity to jump the gun, on any "Tony Rose Project" Release, more like..

Yeh probably. He offered us a 'deal' we could buy something liek 100 cds or something to speed up the process - i'm not sure without the letter in front of me but it involved us shelling out a lot of cash and still not seeing any royalties.
Oh but if we want a copy we can buy it at artist royalty-free price. How generous!

If it wasn't for Tone he wouldn't have the bloody Cd - so his bloody family shouldn't have to bloody buy it! artist price or otherwise! Some people have a weird idea of the world!
anyway - it's not worth getting worked up about. He's just jealous that 'Tony Rose Live' is going to be a HUGE SUCCESS! ha.

Just found this thread. I am stateside and heard of Tony Rose when I purchased a pair of his LPs on Leader"Trailer label from Bill Leader when I was ordering the early LPs of the High Level Ranters in the early to mid-1970s. (Boy, that dates me, doesn't it !) Tony's LPs were amazingly good. What a voice and presence ! I hope who ever is in charge here or reads this message can keep me abreast of the possible release of any Rose cds in the future.
Also, can anyone send me a formal obit for Tony? I only heard of his death from a member of the vocal group Artisan when they sang in my area some 9 months ago. Did Tony ever perform in the US ?
Would like copies of any of his LPs, but prefer to buy legit copies when they come out. I just ordered "Under the Greenwood Tree" on cd. Maybe more will come out later.
