From: Stewie Ed, Natalie Merchant's [from 10,000 Maniacs] recent sortie into traditional and contemporary folk is wonderful. You can listen to sound samples of a few of the songs, including two of the best on the album - 'Which Side Are You On' and 'Diver Boy' - HERE. Her voice and the accompaniment, which includes oldtimey musicians from The Horseflies, at times give 'Which Side' an eerie quality, almost like chanting ghosts. Unreservedly recommended to all but extreme purists. Another album that has caught my attention of late is John Spiers & Jon Boden's 'Bellow'. You can hear some sound samples HERE. --Stewie. |

From: The Unicorn Man I think Dave Auld's new CD is excellent and you can hear it live by coming to Tudor Folk Club in Chesham on Mondays, or at The Bull in Barton le Clay Beds on Mondays, (when he is not at Chesham) or at The Spring Song Special, at The Bull in Barton on Monday June 21st. Floor Spots Welcome. Dave Auld's CD called "Some Auld Favourites" is a nice mix of trad and contemporary songs,with his friends helping out with the choruses. This to me what folk music is all about and you can hear the shire enjoyment of one man and his friends shining through this CD. Very nice and recommended by The Friendly Earth And Fretless Acoustic Club.At The Bull in Barton Le Clay, Beds. To anyone who likes it raw and ready. |

Not on the cuttin edge and a little slow on the take, I like to know who everybody is talking about. So my discoveries are not new. Since I'm new to the fiddle, I've been listening to a lot of what I cannot do. I really like Natalie McMaster's 'Fit as a Fiddle,' with a pile of graceful notes and intriguing rhythm changes in her medlies. I've never heard such a driving rhythm section. Also into the Balfa Brothers' classic Cajun recordings and digging out old albums by the Kentucky Colonels featuring Scotty Stoneman's furious and endlessly creative jamming. Michael Doucet and Beausoleil turns up on my carousel daily. Perhaps I would benefit more at this time by listening to some lousy fiddling, but all I have is my own. |

I downloaded the Digital Traditions software and listened to some of the tunes. Excellent! I am glad to see such eclectic tastes in music among you. I agree that people mentioning what they are listening to encourages me to check out new music. Thanks for starting this thread and to everyone for sharing. The Beatles "Let It Be...Naked" CD just arrived in my mailbox a few days ago. Really a great mix -- thoroughly enjoying it. First Beatles music I have owned in over 25 years! I also bought a couple used Sinead O'Connor CDs after I found and listened to an MP3 of "Nothing Compares 2 U". I still think that is the best song of all I have heard from her. I have been exploring Goth music, just to find out what it is, and found two bands I like -- Per Somnia at http://inconnumedia.com/persomnia/index.html and The Birthday Massacre, a band out of Toronto (not sure I like the name, or the song by the same title, but their other stuff is good). You can find their very interesting, and well done, web site at http://nothingandnowhere.com/ (site takes a while to load, but it is worth the effort to check it out -- few sites are quite like it). I also listen to a ton of Celtic and traditional music, too, but the above is what I have listened to recently. |

From: JedMarum As for listening, I have "study purposes" to my music listening habits these days (a part of the job I LOVE) - so what's on my CD player may not really answer the intent of this thread, BUT there are two performers I have really enjoyed listening to lately and I am sure that Mudcat folks will enjoy these guys too. "It is a difficult and rare thing to be able to weave a shining tapestry of words into the warp of an original tune that sticks in your head. It's rare to write complicated lyrics that seem effortless and natural. Some poets will never be songwriters and some songwriters will never be poets. Michael Troy is both, and there is power in the songs." There are lots of others I enjoy, but these two are stand outs for me. |

I don't have all 12 cds, but the first few are helping introduce me to some excellent Scottish artists (Gordeanna McCulloch, Billy Ross, etc) that I may have had trouble finding otherwise here in Pittsburgh. There's also some great old faves of mine on the discs(Ian Benzie, Janet Russell, Christine Kydd, Jim Malcolm). I encourage anyone who isn't familiar with this set, and who loves Scottish music, to pick up a few cds (or all 12, if you can afford it)! A. |

One thing I have noticed over the last decade, theres millions more choices of canned music on the net, in stores etc., so I think people are now getting back to what used happen before records were invented ie local stuff. Out for a meal or a beer I hear some local band and want to hear them again so I get an MP3 off the internet. |
