Moon dogs, beautiful sunrises and sets, and last night I wished I had a decent camera. The full moon made the new snow sparkle with a brilliance that was incredible. This is a a real long shot, but bear with me...........at the moment, at least every night for the last couple of weeks, there has been an amazing 'star' shining in epic proportions. It is the brightest I have ever seen, so much so that when I spotted it a couple of weeks ago I thought it was a plane. There has been no mention of it on the weather reports as far as I know. I am in London, and what with the pollution and street lighting, we are not usually shone upon with such fervour. Does anyone know what it is? It is brighter than the North star,and that's all the help I can give? |

About noon, just before a downpour I saw a perfect replica of the sun, full circle and about as shiny as the moon, glowing but easy to look at, just under and to the side of where the "real" sun was obviously shining through the clouds. I was on a busy highway, so tho I had my camera with me there was no place to pull off the road to take a picture. I've never seen anything like it. The only thing I can imagine is that an image of the sun was being reflected by water droplets in the clouds, or????? I would dearly love to see the Arora Borealis one day. Is it true that sounds sometimes accompany this phenomenon? |

Venus - it has to do with where in its orbit it is, and its relationship with Earth's orbit. I'd guess that a Venusian year is longer than an Earth year, so it wouldn't be visible all the time. Mars is pretty cool too. It shows up as a really bright red star. |

I have just perused them and you are spot on. It describes exactly what I see. I have been freezing my bones in the garden every night wondering, and now at least I can freeze my bones knowing. Apparently on 23/02/04 it will be just below the crescent moon, and quite spectacular. Am going to get a flask of something hot for that night. Any Mars watchers may also wish to know that on 25/02/04 Mars will be having a close encounter with the moon. Thanks again, I'm back to the sites you linked now. |
