Ampthill Folk Club (Bedfordshire, UK)

11 Feb 04 - 08:13 AM (#1113928)
Subject: Ampthill Folk Club (Bedfordshire, UK)
From: treewind

Despite the Ampthill club - related threads having vanished beneath the radar, Mary and I intrepidly set out to find the club last night, hoping it still existed. What a pleasant surprise to find so much good quality and (surprise) mostly unaccompanied singing. Well, we soon manged to pollute that with numerous squeezeboxes, of course...

A very enjoyable gathering even with only seven people. Well worth it for us, though - we got two bookings out of it. Thanks Mike and Mike!
(Bedford, May 13 + Ampthill later this year)

So come on chaps/chapesses - Cllr of this parish needs all the support he can get. We'll be putting it on our rota of places to go on Tuesday nights.

Well said Treewind, but what is on the next few weeks? Nice Ale there as well, and there is even nice low alcohol drinks there.

March 16 Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. We had the pleasure of hearing them for the first time only recently ('bout time too!).

But my point is, it's not to be missed any week.
For the record (and I hope I've got this right...)
The Folk club meets at the Queen's Head, Ampthill, every Tuesday night, with guests about once a month. Starts at 8:15 or 8:30 depending on different sources of info (Cllr - clarify?). When it's not a guest night it's a really good singaround.

Charles Wells Eagle was the only beer on draught that night. That was OK, especially as we were only 1 pint into a brand new barrel!

If somebody else doesn't do it, I'll knock up an unofficial web site like I've done for Sutton. And for the same reason - to remind me what's on when.

I thought you said Dave & Anni next week - then I looked in my organizer and it said 17 Feb. Apologies for mistake. And it looks like guest nights are more than once a month.

Sorry Cllr - probably no can do (blast)!

Am now working Monday - Wednesday so Tuesday night excursions will be few & far between from now on.

That's the price I must pay for a permanent job with a 3 day week. Oh woe is me - I'll have to make sure I'm home from festivals on the Sunday from now on....

I just know that you'll all have a Fab evening with Dave & Anni & George thrown in for good measure, wish I could be there - have fun!

OK - first stab at a quickly run-up web page:

Cllr - I have not put your email address on in case you don't want it published (though I did find it elsewhere on the web). Your phone no. is there - as it's published elsewhere I assume that's OK.

We had a great time at the club - it's SO friendly and the singing was really good; lots of songs I had never heard before, including one newly written that day...

worth thinking about, its a good option as Paul Bonas himself is a pretty nifty guitar player, almost as good as Chris Flegg of St Albans Folk-song club [Fridays and sundays] and the mellowtones, but not quite.

and the Landlady's O K too

No promises but a mile better option than anything local.

In case anyone didn't see it in Leadfingers' "self aggrandisement" thread,
(a) Leadfingers is the booked guest on April 13
(b) The pub will reopen under new management but the club expects to continue unabated, certainly in the near future. Unless contradicted by further notice.

As usual any news should appear here and on the website

Will he behave? Will it be musical mahem or memorable magic?

Ask him to show you his new toy.

Have a great evening
