11 Feb 04 - 02:27 PM (#1114229) Subject: Ghost Train-lyrics From: GUEST,carol On a Rural Rhythm reissue, train songs, there is a song called "Ghost train." Chorus is "Its a ghost train, its a ghost train, the roundhouse by the Pearly Gate, Many souls have got their ticket, On a train that's never late." On the 2cnd verse, there is a list of the crew, Casey Jones, the engineer, etc. I can't understand who is the fireman on the first line of that verse. Help? |
11 Feb 04 - 02:46 PM (#1114246) Subject: RE: Ghost Train-lyrics From: Joe Offer I see that Hank Snow had a song called "Ghost Trains" on his Railroad Man LP. I wonder if that's the same song. It's the only mention of "Ghost Train" that I found in Norm Cohen's Long Steel Rail songbook. Looks like Marty Robbins also recorded a song called "Ghost Train" Marcy McCaslin has a "Ghost Train" on her Broken Promises album - she does mostly recent songwriter stuff, but some trad & older things. Rickie Lee Jones has one, too, on Flying Cowboys. There's a song by that name by a group called Gorillaz but somehow I don't think I'd be interrested in that one... -Joe Offer- |
11 Feb 04 - 03:06 PM (#1114263) Subject: RE: Ghost Train-lyrics From: Eugene Judge I've found the versions by Hank Snow, Marty Robbins and about a dozen others including the Bee Gees and Elvis Costello! All different versions no comparative words to the one requested. Eugene |
11 Feb 04 - 03:24 PM (#1114277) Subject: RE: Ghost Train-lyrics From: GUEST,carol The group that sang it on the album is Earl Taylor & Jim McCall with the Stoney Mountain Boys. It sounds like "vindu bury" is the fireman Casey Jones the engineer. Jimmy Rogers is the Brakeman On the cannonball of fear. I would think there are not that many names that would fit here. Obviously a legendery fireman, but I can't think of who. |
11 Feb 04 - 03:29 PM (#1114283) Subject: RE: Ghost Train-lyrics From: Joe Offer Eugene, if you could post the Hank Snow and Marty Robbins lyrics, that would be wonderful - even if they weren't the ones originally requested. Carol, if you can post everything you have so far, it will be a good start. Somebody here is bound to have that recording. -Joe Offer- |
11 Feb 04 - 04:01 PM (#1114301) Subject: Lyr Add: GHOST TRAIN (bluegrass) From: GUEST,carol GHOST TRAIN It's a ghost train, It's a ghost train Hear that awful mournful cry Hear her rumble in the distance As she thunders through the sky. It's a ghost train It's a ghost train The roundhouse by the Pearly Gate Many souls have got their ticket On a train that's never late "vindu bury" is the fireman Casey Jones, the engineer Jimmy Rogers is the brakeman On the cannonball of fear. It is a fairly simple arrangement,(bluegrass) but it has minor chords every other line which gives it a haunting air. |
11 Feb 04 - 04:18 PM (#1114307) Subject: Lyr Add: GHOST TRAIN (1.Marty Robbins 2.Hank Snow) From: Eugene Judge Joe Lyrics as requested. Eugene GHOST TRAIN Marty Robbins Way out west an Arizona cowboy tends the herd The dessert lies beneath a sky of blue Far away, in brightest day, a ghostly sound is heard The phantom of the rail comes into view Hear that lonesome whistle callin' On his lonely ear is fallin' Loud and clear, just hear that lonesome wail But it's just the ghost, the phantom of the rail Little did he know the train was wrecked in '84 After it had crossed the Great Divide Every year it tries again to make it just once more If only to the California Line Hear that lonesome whistle callin' On the barren dessert fallin' Loud and clear, just hear that lonesome wail But it's just the ghost, the phantom of the rail Clickity-clack along the track, it's boiler showin' red As on it comes along the rusty rails People that are ridin' in the cars have long been dead Lost in time along the Phantom Trail Hear that lonesome whistle callin' On the barren dessert fallin' Is it real to feel the very ground beneath him shake As on it comes, the only run it ever makes Cross here comes the phantom, as his eyes in wonder gaze His pony shys and heads in for the brush And as it comes upon him terror grips his heart, amazed Leapin' to avoid it's onward rush Hear that lonesome whistle callin' On the barren dessert fallin' Thought he saw the engineer, thought he heard him once more wail As on he went, forever bent, on stayin' on the ghost train rail GHOST TRAIN Hank Snow It was early in the fall and a-blowin' up a squall From the trestle you could hear the weirdest moans With a mighty lonesome cry came a whistle from the sky And it chilled the very marrow in my bones Then a loud, rushing roar, like you never heard before Turned the blood to icy water in my veins As I watched with rising fear, something strange was drawing near And I saw in the clouds ghost trains Ghost trains, ghost trains, what a fearful sight The Cannonball and Number Nine were racing thru the night Just as they passed me by, I heard the engineer cry Give her coal, give her coal, shovel it on You could see the fireman grinnin', in the engine that was winnin' But I knew before the finish they'd be gone But he knew before the finish they'd be gone You could see the driver's roll as they shoveled on the coal And the black smoke came pouring from the stacks As they thundered thru the sky, I am here to testify You could hear the wheels a-clickin' on the tracks Thru the smoke and the steam, you could see the headlights gleam Now I have no proof, but still the fact remains You may doubt it, but I swear, there were cinders in my hair When I saw in the clouds ghost trains Ghost trains, ghost trains, what a fearful sight The Cannonball and Number Nine were racing thru the night Just as they passed me by, I heard the engineer cry Give her coal, give her coal, shovel it on You could see the fireman grinnin', in the engine that was winnin' As I watched I saw them fade into the dawn As he watched he saw them fade into the dawn |

11 Feb 04 - 07:06 PM (#1114442) Subject: Lyr Add: BEN DEWBERRY'S FINAL RUN (from Hank Snow) From: GUEST,ClaireBear And here are the BEN DEWBERRY lyrics, just to round out the picture (cribbed fromthis site): BEN DEWBERRY'S FINAL RUN Recorded by Hank Snow Words and music by Andrew Jenkins Ben Dewberry was a brave engineer He told his fireman don't you ever fear All I want is the water and coal Put your head out the window, watch the drivers roll Watch the drivers roll - watch the drivers roll Put your head out the window; watch the drivers roll. Ben Dewberry said before he died Two more roads that he wanted to ride His fireman asked him what could they be Said the old Northeastern and the A and B The A and B - he said the A and B It's the old Northeastern and the A and B. On the fatal morning it began to rain Around the curve come a passenger train Ben Dewberry was the engineer With the throttle wide open and without any fear He didn't have no fear - he didn't have no fear He had her runnin' wide open without any fear. Ben looked at his watch - shook his head We may make Atlanta but we'll all be dead The train was flyin' by the troublin' switch Without any warning then she took the ditch Yea! she went in the ditch - well, she took the ditch Without any warning - then she took the ditch. The big locomotive leaped from the rail Ben never lived to tell that awful tale His life was ended and his work was done When Ben Dewberry made his final run He made his final run - he made his final run When Ben Dewberry made his final run. |
